Jun 30, 2018 - SSN is more than music!

Sisters Sing Network holds a "convention" every 4 years where women's chorus' come together from all over to sing and socialize and learn at workshops. Brenda, our chorus director at Carefree invited us to join her at this meeting and sing in the same mass chorus that her chorus sings in. We gathered on Wednesday night at the reception and party and ended on Saturday night after we sang in a mass chorus. There were 20 choruses from San Diego to Portland, Maine but mostly from the Midwest. I don't know how many independent singers there were...

Jun 30, 2017 - Friends at Grand Rapids, MI

We arrived on Tuesday, June 27 at our old friends, Dave and Barb Decker's house. The weather was sunny and in the 70's. On Wednesday, we went to Rockford, MI with our friend, Marsha Katerberg. Rockford is a cute small town with a pretty river walk. On Thursday, Marsha, Barb and I visited Meijers Botanical Gardens and then went out to lunch. Larry and Loren Katerberg went to Gilmore Car Museum. Dave had to work. Thursday evening we all (Dave and Barb, Marsha and Loren, Larry and I) went on a riverboat cruise on the Grand River. The boat was...

Jun 21, 2016 - Centreville, VA to Grand Rapids, MI

Click on thumbnails to enlarge All good things must come to an end and so I leave daughter Vicki and her family to continue their busy schedules of work and play. Enjoyed visiting with them immensely. And I leave Debbi behind to continue her independent travel in her RV – as she now truly begins full time RVing. I am heading towards MI where I have a couple of more stops to check in on relatives to make sure they are staying on the straight and narrow :) :) :) I have traveled the Washington to MI routes so many times that I can’t think of...

Sep 3, 2015 - Dance-a-Rama

When I attended the National Square Dance Convention in Springfield, Massachusetts (see earlier blog entry), I heard about “Dance-a-Rama” and immediately made a reservation. Dance-a-Rama is the annual Square Dance Singles Convention held in different cities each year. This was my first ever visit. For those of you who have never been square dancing or it was many years ago, allow me to give a quick overview. Normally, each square consists of four couples (8 dancers). The “caller” announces the dancing “calls” and everyone executes them as...

Jun 25, 2014 - new home away from home

About a week before we left for Japan, we zipped up to Grand Rapids and purchased a new (to us) motor home. It felt like an impetuous decision in some ways, but we have been thinking about how long the old one will remain trouble free. We know that we like Dutch Star models and the dealer had put so many photos of the rig on his web site, we knew what it was all about before we even saw it. And the price was right. Today it was time to pick it up. We are still suffering mightily from jet lag, but it worked to our advantage. Grand Rapids is...

Sep 23, 2013 - ArtPrize, Grand Rapids, Michigan

What an awesome day! Beautiful weather and Grand Rapids is a beautiful city, fully taking advantage of the Grand River flowing through the downtown area. Oklahoma City has a nice river walk but not quite up with Grand Rapids yet. The ArtPrize art show had entries from all over the world. We could vote on which one we liked but it was too difficult to choose just one.And all kinds of art...murals, metal, paintings, sculptures, unusual and beautiful. We parked and walked to the Gerald Ford museum - free admittance in honor of ArtPrize with...

Sep 7, 2012 - Change in plans

Thursday night as we were walking the campground near Grass Lake, we met another nice Michigan couple who reassured us that we had the correct plans for seeing the U.P. But the weather is beginning to change and after visiting with them, we scratched Elkhart for now and will head north in order to try and get everything in that we want to see in northern Michigan. Friday evening we parked at the Elks Lodge in Grand Rapids which is on a beautiful golf course. Of course I forgot to take a picture. We had a nice dinner at a local chinese place...

Aug 16, 2012 - Second Trip To Grand Rapids

From Hidden Ridge Resort – Hopkins, MI Once again a beautiful blue sky above and temps only reaching the low 80s called for us to complete the short list of “must things to do” this week. We returned to Cedar Rapids to experience the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. This park has become one of the most significant sculpture experiences in the Midwest…….2009 named one of the top “30-Must-See Museums” in the world and is Michigan’s second largest tourist attraction. Meijer Gardens first opened to the public in 1995 through the...
