Aug 20, 2018 - Beaches!!

Click on thumbnails to enlarge My last entry was a bit more than a month ago from the Lake Michigan shores at Grand Haven. In that past month I have alternated back and forth between multiple stays at Grand Haven State Park and Holland State Park with one overnight stay in front of my brother Ron and wife Gert’s home in Grand Rapids. Over that month plus, (prior to arriving in Grand Haven, I also spent some time at Charles Mears State Park in Pentwater, also on Lake Michigan) I did little but be a beach bum. Since, unlike the Michiganders,...

Jul 21, 2018 - Grand Haven, MI

Click on thumbnails to enlarge Well, it’s a grey drizzly day at Grand Haven State Park so I’ll use the next few hours to catch up on my travel blog. To pick up from my last entry,..I had gotten my domicile in SD taken care of and I ordered a new roof air conditioner from Amazon, picked it up and had it installed. One last errand to do. My right front hydraulic jack was leaking at the cylinder and needed to be replaced. A couple of months ago, I detoured in TX to get it repaired but the HWH authorized service center didn’t have the correct...

We are home now. Some last minute notes. \ Kotzebue is above the Arctic Circle, therefore the ground is permafrost. All of the buildings are built on pylons in order to get down to solid ground for support. As the climate is changing, the permafrost is melting and the ground is becoming spongy. It will be interesting to see what the result will be for the roads and buildings. I am sure that is why there are so few paved roads in Kotzebue. Most are dirt. / We helped Ramona with a yard sale. She was able to disencumber herself of quite a...

Jul 21, 2015 - Saugatuck and Grand Haven Michigan

July 21 Busy day! Drove to Saugatuck, MI, about a half hour south of Grand Haven. The weather was perfect so we walked around the beautiful waterfront marina and checked out the amazing yachts, berthed right next to the boardwalk and getting lots of attention from passersby. I was momentarily nostalgic for my sailing days of yesteryear, but, “reality check,” quickly remembered that boating is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work! Saugatuck is a lovely town and was busy with tourists and summer folk. We window shopped for awhile, but our...

Aug 8, 2014 - Grand Haven

Beautiful weather in Grand Haven, visited numerous local sites, the Hadley/Hume Period Homes were outstanding, Mr. Hadley through his lumber company started most of the city's manufacturing companies. Located on Lake Michigan made for excellent commerce. My sister Penny had a medical issue in Dallas, I spent most of my time on the phone checking on her progress and trying to determine if I should fly to Dallas. She had a mild heart attack, after an heart cath it was determined she had blockage, they put in 2 stints and will require two more...

Jul 26, 2014 - Grand Haven - Coast Guard City USA

Since we weren't driving far (about 30 minutes), we decided to leave late and park the RV at the Holland mall. I wanted to do a little shopping and we thought we might as well take Rocky to the dog park one last time before leaving. So we arrived in Grand Haven around 1:30 and found a HUGE campground with kids everywhere! This is definitely a family destination. I took Rocky for a walk while Jay set up the RV and we found a trail at the back of the campground that was quiet and not crowded. Rocky loved the sand (which seems to be...

Dec 29, 2013 - Texas Travel

We left Michigan only an hour later than planned and in a snowstorm (not planned). The first 150 miles was slow going with frequent whiteouts. About the time we hit the Indiana border the snow was abating and travel became faster. By the tim we made Illinois there was very little snow on the ground. when the weather cleared we began pushing it a bit trying to make it to m brothers house in Edwardsville, IL for the night. About 4:30 we needed to fill the gas tank again so in Effingham, IL I pulled off the highway & headed for a truck stop....

Aug 12, 2012 - "Coast Guard City USA"

From Hidden Ridge Resort – Hopkins, MI A two and one half mile boardwalk, a set of range lights and a city distinguished as “Coast Guard City USA” put Grand Haven on our short list of places to visit during our week long stay. So with blue skies and temps in the mid 70s we decided to keep our day going and headed out to enjoy the afternoon in this city on the shores of Lake Michigan. When we reached the boardwalk located downtown along the Grand River our first sighting was the declaration that this in fact was “Coast Guard City USA”....

Home Sweet RV - 2012

Aug 1, 2012 - Grand Haven, MI

The state parks on the west side of Michigan Lake are very busy. We were told to be sure and visit Holland, Michigan so we made that our next stop. Most state parks were full. We were in the mood to just relax and cut back on some of the site seeing. We got the 'last' site at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park. Not sure how their reservation system works as the site next to us was empty. We could only get a site for 2 nights. The news stations were reporting that the state parks are bringing in big revenue money for Michigan this year. This park...

May 27, 2012 - Getting Close

One week from today we should be camping in Tomah, Wisconsin. Time is getting short and the to-do list is getting longer. Excitement is building for Jean and Pam, but Oscar and Rudy don't seem to care (until they get loaded in the motor home). We plan to blog daily, or when we can get an Internet connection. Hope to be able to upload photos and figure out how to use the interactive map so you all can travel with us vicariously. Plan to be on the road by 8:00 a.m. next Sunday. In actuality we may make it by 10:00 a.m.

Sep 29, 2011 - Seeing a Good Friend in Her Neighborhood, and More

Finally it’s Wednesday and we met our friend Carol for dinner in Saugatuck! Carol and I go waaaaaay back to the mid to late 80s when we met on a ski trip, became pals when we were on the Ski Club Council in Heidelberg and LOVED skiing together – heck, she guided me down my first black-run mogul field! None of us were sure when we saw each other last, but knew it had to easily be over a decade! She left Germany in 1993, returned to Grand Rapids, had a few business trips back to Germany, and one time I flew up to visit her from D.C. when I...

Sep 26, 2009 - Our Shakedown

So, we finally got the motor home filled to the brim with food, clothes, dog and accessories, laptop, and everything else we thought we might need for our first camping trip. It was a three day, two night adventure in the new-to-us house on wheels and we were excited and anxious. Would it make it? Would there be a break down? Would the dog handle the trip? Well, yes, we made it. There were no break downs. No, the dog did not do very well at all. We chose to visit a KOA in Grand Haven where our neighbors stay for the season. The park was...
