Jun 14, 2014 - Escanaba, MI - Heading South

(Ron Writing) In this part of the country it seems like the weather just keeps alternating between cloudy/rainy and sunny every day or two. Today it was cloudy all day and it rained most of the morning. We left Lake Linden, MI and headed south a short distance to Hancock. We crossed the Portage Canal Lift Bridge to Houghton and then continued south along the east side of the Keweenaw Peninsula on US-41. We stopped in Baraga at the bottom of the peninsula to see the very large and beautiful sculpture of Father Frederic Baraga. He was born...

Aug 30, 2013 - The Upper Peninsula, Michigan

After departing Wisconsin, our next booking was with another RV Park connected to a casino in Michigan. What a pleasant surprise this spot is! The Island Resort Casino in Harris, Michigan is beautiful. I had read a review that said the property had undergone a recent renovation and was getting favorable reviews from recent guests. We were not disappointed! (The reviews also stated that the slot machines were "tight, tight, tight!!!"... unfortunately, the reviews were quite accurate in this regard as well!) We drove past the casino/hotel and...

Aug 24, 2012 - Escanaba, Michigan

Upon arriving from Munising about 4:30PM on August 23, we checked into our hotel. It was another tired Best Western with old furnishings, no trolley to bring in your luggage, and no guest laundry facilities; Lynda was going to do washing during our planned three night stay. In spite of having amassed some points, this may be our last Best Western. Lynda seems to cough and sneeze a lot and wonders whether they clean the A/C units regularly. The young woman at the front desk had no answer for Lynda in this regard and seemed uninterested. We...

Sep 11, 2011 - 911

This morning we left the RV Radio Service Rally. Pat did a great job at organizing our week for us. Seems like everyone had a great time. After leaving we drove through Minnesota, and into Wisconsin. Home of the Cheese Heads. We drove right along lake Superior. Took a few photos along the way. It was a litle humid but nice otherwise. After a long day of driving we stayed at the local Wal*Mart in Escanaba. 10 years ago "We will Never Forget" God Bless America. September9,2001 (911) is now 10 years later "God Bless America" ¤*¨¨*¤.¸¸...

Aug 4, 2011 - One Down - One To Go!

From Whispering Valley RV Park – Rapid River, MI (Upper Peninsula) ONE DOWN……ONE TO GO! AC problem fixed, got a new upper unit and for insurance and our peace of mind have a lower unit junction box stored below. We had asked that this be replaced too, but they said the old one was still good and who out there knows of any “service departments” doing what the customer wants? So for $68 we bought it for that “just in case” that seems to pop up now and then! Tomorrow AM is the FORD appointment…….hope that goes well and is CHEAP. Since we were...

Home Sweet RV - 2011

May 16, 2011 - Two beautiful mornings

The last two sunrises have been beautiful here in WI. It's been so overcast and rainy here they haven't seen a blue sky in months, but it's here now, finally. The trees are just starting to bloom, flowers are starting to pop out, etc. It was great seeing Chris and Nicole Jalbert, my cousins Don & Peggy Olsen, Sharon & Tim Dumholt, my aunts Ann Jewett and Betty Olsen. Didn't get to see the second and third cousins but saw lots of pictures. Today we're on the road again toward Mackinaw City, MI. Don't know if we'll do the entire 400 miles...

Oct 12, 2010 - Up the U.P.

Our destination in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan today was only 140 miles away but it took us 7½ to do it. And people say we aren't good travelers! Anyway, we were transferring ourselves from St. Ignace, Michigan to Escanaba, Michigan and found a few things to distract us along the way. Our day started with a splendid sunrise we were able to view from our room. We hit the road and continued to be awed by the autumn colors we saw as we drove along the shore of Lake Michigan. We stopped at every roadside park or anything else that looked...

Jul 29, 2010 - Moving up the UP

We left Wisconsin behind and moved just a little bit into Michigan to stay two nights at JW Wells State Park. The park itself is quite nice although a little too close in their sites for my tastes. We weren't too close because we got a handicapped site which was on a corner, but some of the campers were quite cheek by jowl. The weather has been really nice, much cooler than in Illinois - we ran the A/C in the p.m. just to cool down a little, but have all the windows open at night with a cool breeze blowing in. On Thursday, we drove into...

Two Hams in a Can

Jun 19, 2010 - Manistique, MI to Saginaw, MN

Sandy & Bill E, of MN called last night & wanted to meet us today at Canal Park. That puts our morning plans into high gear. Our plan was to get up really early as we are about 4 hrs from Duluth & we wanted to meet for lunch. Ron didn’t sleep much (I think he was counting money going into the gas tank) & I didn’t feel real well, I was so tired but couldn’t sleep. So we didn’t get up until about 6:45A & were on the road at 7:05 A. We ate breakfast on the run – picked up coffee down the road a ways. It is bright & sunny – perfect traveling...

Sep 17, 2008 - Escanaba, MI - 1,100 Kms Today

It was cooler than yesterday and clear again this morning. The weather can’t hold out like this forever but I will take it while I can. I was dressed for a warmer day with vents open and cooler clothes but it worked out okay. I gassed up and rode due east toward Sioux Falls. A short distance past there and I was in Minnesota – the land of silly names. I rode past a sign for Minnehaha. Please. Turns out it is the name of a fictional Indian character. I shouldn’t be so quick to judge. I kept my eyes peeled for a sign pointing to Frostbite...

Aug 17, 2008 - The trip across the top of the US

The trip across the top of the states was great, the green beautiful farms stretched for miles. We were surprised to go from such high mountains at Glacier to flat land so quickly. We couldn’t find a camp site one night so we decides to try do what other friends said they did, PARK IN WAL-MART !!!! Can you believe me the person that always has a camera in hand forgot to take a picture!!!! Others were parked there, but when you don’t pay you feel like you are doing something wrong and will get run off during the night. Just in case we did I...
