Jun 20, 2018 - Making the Turn South

We turned south from Mackinaw City and headed toward Traverse City along the shore of Lake Michigan and Grand Travers Bay today. We followed US 31 most of the way. The ride was pretty uneventful with not much to see. As we got into the Traverse City area we passed a lot of cherry orchards and many of the trees were loaded with ripening cherries. Starting June 30, the Northern Michigan Cherry Festival starts. Unfortunately we'll be leaving on June 29. I'm hoping the cherries start coming into the farm stands before we leave. We ended the...

Saturday June 2 This morning we overheard there were tadpoles at the nearby pond in the RV Park and there are! There are teeny black tadpoles and giant light green tadpoles, as well as green and brown frogs that blend into the rocks surrounding the pound. Little Bear went to the pond’s edge and disturbed a frog, the frog made a giant leap into the pond and Bear is now afraid to go anywhere near the pond. We drove into Anderson’s Market in Glen Arbor for groceries; it’s the closest at 6 miles out. Andersons has a full line of groceries,...

Spring Trip 2018

Jun 1, 2018 - Empire, MI

Friday,June 1 - high 50’s and windy On to Frankfort (population 1,200) to visit Point Betsie Lighthouse. It was cold, windy and no dogs allowed in the buildings. We sneak Bear into the fog horn building with a video history presentation. I tuck Bear into my coat where she falls asleep with just her head out. Two ladies drift in and I turn sideways so they can’t see Bear, she wakes up and hears more people coming in and we get up and leave. Scott purchased a ticket for the lighthouse tour and Bear and I find a path to the nearby beach. I...

Spring Trip 2018

May 31, 2018 - Empire, MI

Thursday, May 31st - Hot & humid I woke up at 5am and it was foggy. We went to Empire a little after 10 am and shopped at the Miser’s Hoard and walked along Front Street where we found another shop with lots of good stuff. The sun broke out by noon and we were on our way to Traverse City! First stop, Taco Bell, my favorite stop since high school! Parking in the historic downtown area is competitive and Scott found a lot that only charged $1 an hour. At Wilson’s Antiques we had Bear in her stroller and were able to visit all 4 floors of...

Spring Trip 2018

May 30, 2018 - Empire, MI

Wednesday, May 30th - Hot & humid We are off to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to drive the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. Entering the park we came across the only covered bridge with a National Park Service arrowhead. Mr. Pierce Stocking built the bridge to provide a picturesque entrance for visitors. We stopped at a trail to the dunes and drove through a vibrantly green Beech-Maple forest. Sleeping Bear Dunes received its name from a Native American story about a starving mother bear crossing the lake with her 2 cubs to find food....

May 29, 2018 - Empire, MI

Tuesday, May 29th at Petoskey RV Resort 9:30 am. Bear and I returned from the vet after her diagnosis of coccidiosis, a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract. The vet gave her a shot and longer term meds and she was feeling much better a few hours later. We raised the jacks and departed for our next stop at 11:00 am. We arrived at Indigo Bluffs RV Resort, Empire Michigan (actually 3 miles outside of Empire city limits) at 1:30 pm. This is a high end RV Resort that rents out owner sites. We quickly set up on our large concrete site with...

Spring Trip 2018

Aug 21, 2016 - Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Sat., Aug. 20th - With any long RV trip, there will be a day you’d like to erase from the journal…well, this was it. Nevertheless, we were settled into our campsite at Indigo Bluffs near Sleeping Bear Dunes before the skies opened for an all day and night deluge. The dirt campground roads became a muddy lake in the drenching rain, but we were thankful the 40 mph wind gusts that were forecast missed us. We hunkered down and waited for morning to come. What else can you do? Sun., Aug. 21st – After watching Pastor David Powell preach at Salem...

Jul 28, 2016 - Sleeping Bear Dunes

Today marks the first day of hour trip heading toward Texas and Home. Our objective for today, was to find and explore the area around Sleeping Bear Dunes national seashore. We arrived at our campground/RV park for today which is a very nice RV resort. We have a paved lot and a paved patio to enjoy for our short stay here. After several days with no satellite TV, we have a clear view of the southern ski and all 3 Dish satellites are in view for watching either the PGA golf tournament or the Democrat convention (argh). We did enjoy a short...

Aug 29, 2013 - Sleeping Bear Dunes

Pulling back into the campground last night at 9:40 pm, we were fully aware that we had put in a 13-hour day! Our trip to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse and Sleeping Bear Dunes was full of walking, a lot of it in SAND! I'm including a map of the area we were in so you can see that we traveled to the end of a peninsula to view the lighthouse. Then traveled back down to get to Sleeping Bear Dunes. Since this was a new area for us, it was fun to see another side of Michigan (literally!) since until now most of our time has been spent either on...
