Aug 21, 2012 - Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, etc

We enjoyed this visit to the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore and surrounding area as much as we did on our first visit several years ago. We hiked dunes, enjoyed beautiful views looking over Lake Michigan and smaller inland lakes, explored the small towns in the area and the Mission Peninsula during our 6 day stay. The only thing that has changed from our last visit is more people. The locals told us that since Good Morning America named Sleeping Bear Dunes as the most beautiful place in America a year ago that tourism has skyrocketed. We...

Summer 2012

Aug 16, 2012 - Yeah, the a/c is fixed...on to Empire, MI

UPS was delivering the part and though they normally run by 10:30 am, when we got to the shop this morning at 10:45 they had not run....for unknown reasons they were running several hours late. Once the part arrived, the service guy was very quick and we were on the road about an hour and a half later. I guess things happen for a reason though because thanks to our late start we missed most of the rain and only drove through rain about an hour of the 3.5 hour drive to Empire and it had stopped by the time we got to the campground . The...

Jul 27, 2012 - Edging on to Empire

Luckily, it was dry this morning and we got ready to move as soon as we wrapped up our morning chores. After a light, early lunch, we hit the road. We had about 90 miles to drive and check-in time at the next destination was 1 o’clock. About half-way, we stopped at a roadside park to get Foxy out for a walk. It was decidedly cooler than our other driving days this trip. It was the first driving day we didn’t have to run the generator for a/c to keep the coach cool. While Joe did a safety walk-around of the rig and Jeep, I took Foxy for a...

Fall Trip 2011

Oct 12, 2011 - Old Mission and Traverse City

This morning we headed east toward Traverse City then north onto Old Mission Peninsula. We made our way almost to the northern tip where we stopped to visit Henn Cottage which is owned by the family of our friend Debbie Henn Jones. The cottage was built in the late 1800's and faces Grand Traverse Bay. As she had told us, we walked along the sidewalk running parallel to the shoreline, met a few neighbors and saw the rest of the cottages along the bay, both large and small. We also went inside the cottage which is really neat with old wood...

Fall Trip 2011

Oct 11, 2011 - Traverse City and Old Mission

We started this morning driving in to the town of Empire and stopping at the Visitor Center for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We then headed to the dunes and took a scenic drive. Along the way we came upon a 1.5 mile trail through the dunes which proved to be a little more difficult than we had expected since we were walking in soft sand, up and down hills (dunes). At one point we were at the top of the dune that is a dune climb for another stop on the scenic route. The views around the scenic road were quite beautiful. There are...
