It was pretty rough on the water today so, being the wimps we are, we decided to drive around the west side of the Keweenaw Peninsula to Eagle Point and Eagle Harbor. All along the way were little parks with bathrooms, picnic tables and magnificent views of the lake. The sun was in and out and the wind was fierce but the coastline was spectacular with long sandy beaches interspersed with cliffs of red conglomerate rocks and other pebbled beaches. Jul 31, 2010 - Seeing The Sights
After breakfast, our first stop was a short hike to Fort Wilkins. This fort was built in 1844 by the US army to keep peace between the copper miners and local Indians. We were fortunate that a civil war re-enactment group was there preparing meals just like they did back in 1840. Kitty won't admit it, but she remembers cooking like that! They also fired their cannon several times a day to demonstrate how it was done back then. A doctor was giving a lecture on how they embalmed solders that were killed in action.
