Aug 13, 2017 - Henry Ford Greenfield Village

Yesterday was such a good day at the Museum, we decided to return today to experience the Greenfield Village. This is 80 acres of grounds that have 1800 buildings brought from around the country. The buildings are original and were moved to these grounds. The whole 80 acre scenario is a living tribute to the way people lived during the times. As Henry Ford said.."We ought to know more about the families who founded this nation, and how they lived. One way to do that is to reconstruct as nearly as possible the conditions under which they...

Jun 24, 2017 - The Henry Ford Part 2

Dearborn, MI We had another full day today and, again, we did not see it all. The Greenfield Village part of The Henry Ford has 7 areas: working farms, Liberty Craftworks, Henry Ford’s Model T, Railroad Junction, Main Street, Edison at Work, and Porches and Parlors. We went through all 7, some faster and some slower than others. We saw how farms were operated in the late 1800s. We saw cattle, sheep, and chickens. We looked at various displays and then went to the Liberty Craftworks. We saw sawmills, a tin smith, glass blowing, a printing...

Jun 23, 2017 - The Henry Ford

Dearborn, MI Visiting The Henry Ford, formally known as the Henry Ford Museum of Innovation and Greenfield Village, is a huge endeavor. We have slated 2 full days but that will be inadequate. It is a large indoor and outdoor history museum complex. We spent the first couple of hours touring the Ford Rouge Factory. We started with orientation movies and then checked out the production line. The movies informed us that Henry Ford needed a way to produce cars faster than 1 every 12 hours on a production line. He got ideas from cotton mills...

Jun 22, 2017 - Back to the USA

Dearborn, MI For over 20 years, Niagara Parks has hosted Canada’s longest running fireworks series. It is magnificent and loud. If one chooses, one can view the fireworks while cruising on the Captain Hornblower while imbibing adult beverages and noshing on various goodies. We opted to forgo that experience – maybe next time. After a good night’s sleep and a filling breakfast, we set off. We almost immediately encountered a lengthy detour. Then we made a wrong turn. When we finally got on our way, we almost immediately stopped again. There...

Sep 15, 2016 - The Henry Ford

What can everyday objects created by ordinary people tell us about new ways to solve problems and make life better? A great deal, Henry Ford believed. To show it, he amassed a vast collection of artifacts documenting the genius of the American people—and then created a nine-acre showcase in Dearborn, just outside of Detroit, Michigan; in which to share it. Today, Henry Ford Museum is a remarkable destination that lets you experience the breakthroughs big and small that have made our world what it is today. The Henry Ford (also known as the...

Jul 29, 2016 - Ford Country

We started our day of touring Ford country with a stroll through Greenfield Village. This is an amazing 90 acre step back in history with many original and authentically reproduced homes, machinery, labs, etc. of the great American inventors. From there we strolled through the Henry Ford Museum. Both of these visits could have been full-day excursions, but we did our best to take in as much as possible before boarding the bus to the Ford “Rouge” plant. There we spent over two hours watching the actual assembly of the F150 pick-ups where...

Sep 29, 2014 - A day at the Henry Ford Museum

Great day at the Museum. We didn't finish the whole thing. It is huge and there are many different rooms to look through. It is not only cars. It includes furniture, Lincoln history, planes, Rosa Parks bus, a look through time periods and how things changed, and so much more. I think both of us need icy hot after today.

Jul 9, 2014 - Henry Ford's Greenfield Village

Today we spent the day at the Greenfield Village. Entering the Greenfield Village is like stepping back in time of America's past. This whole village is the vision of Henry Ford. There are over 100 historical structures in this 80-acre complex dating back to the 1700's. A few of the structures we saw were Noah Webster's home where he wrote the first American Dictionary, Thomas Edison's Menlo Park laboratory, the courthouse where Abraham Lincoln practiced law, the Melville and Orville Wright's family home and cycle shop. There were people...

Jul 7, 2014 - Henry Ford Museum and Ford F-150 Factory Tour

Today we went to the Henry Ford Museum and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour in Dearborn, MI. We went on the factory tour first. We boarded a bus and were taken about 2 miles to the factory where we walked around a one-third mile elevated catwalk to see the 2014 F-150 pickup trucks being assembled. We watched a short movie telling of Henry Ford's responsibility for transforming the automobile from an invention into an innovation that shaped the twentieth century and continues to affect our lives today. He developed and manufactured the first...

May 20, 2014 - Dearborn

Sunday was a travel day and we don't usually do anything. Monday we went to The Henry Ford. It is a truly BIG place. We opted to do the tour of the factory first. It was neat seeing how they assembled a truck, the F 150. Everything is done in steps and I can't imagine working there - you always do the same thing over and over, day after day, year in and year out. Next we toured the museum. It is a mammoth place! We saw everything from doll houses to huge locomotives and lots of cars of all sizes and varieties. The Allegheny is a huge (and I...

Oct 1, 2013 - Day 22 - De Forest, Illinois to Dearborn, Michigabn

We arrived home at about 6:00 today. It's good to be here. We decided to come straight home through Chicago instead of going back through the U.P. I am glad we did, but what a nightmare it was going through Illinois and Chicago. Not only was the traffic very heavy, it cost us close to $40 just in tolls. The tolls would have been easier to swallow if the roads were good. There were miles and miles and miles of construction. REALLY!!! At one point, the sign said "Construction, next 45 miles. Speed limit 45". WE HAD TO PAY FOR THIS...
