Jun 23, 2015 - Grand Rapids and Big Rapids, Michigan

We intentionally positional ourselves between Grand Rapids and Big Rapids - WHY you ask? - Last Fall we visited our first Presidential Museum and Library. We enjoyed it so much we decided to visit others along our path. The Gerald Ford museum is located in Grand Rapids. President Ford grew up in Grand Rapids. He was an Eagle Scout, lawyer, naval officer, congressman and President. He and Mrs Ford are buried on the grounds. The Navy's newest super carrier,USS Gerald R. Ford (CBN-78) was commissioned in 2013. - Big Rapids hosts Ferris State...

May 25, 2014 - Cedar Springs, Michigan

Friday afternoon Ross & Marge's daughter, along with her husband Frank and their youngest son Paul, arrived in Grand Rapids. After they got settled in Ross, Marge and Katie drove into Grand Rapids to meet the new arrivals in their hotel room. Later on everyone went out for dinner at a Mexican Restaurant that Morgan had frequented in the past. Katie had decided she wanted to move in with her parents at the hotel and Paul decided to room with his brother in Morgan's apartment located about five minutes from the hotel. So Ross and Marge...

May 22, 2014 - Cedar Springs, Michigan

Ross and Marge left Joliet Tuesday morning around 0800 and drove to Cedar Springs, Michigan where they had reservations at the Lakeside Camp Park. It was a relatively easy drive with no really heavy traffic anywhere along the way and what traffic there was moved at or slightly below the speed limit. They picked up Interstate 80 south of Chicago and those portions of the road in Illinois and Indiana are toll roads. For the portions of I 80 they used they paid two tolls of $1.75 each. Near Gary, Indiana Ross stopped to refuel because once...

Jul 6, 2009 - Fourth of July Weekend 09

I know I said in the last small post that I would post for the 4th week end on Sunday night. Well after two days of Big hayrides and a fishing contest It didn’t take a whole lot to talk myself out of not posting last night. For the most part it was a good 4th….nobody got out of line and was asked to leave……there seems to be a broad area here for getting one’s self thrown out. The hayrides went over well, with very good participation from the young as well as the old. We only had one Lady get on that was, shall we say...Three Sheets To The...

Jun 28, 2009 - A Bum Knee & A Dog Crap Problem

I know it’s been a while since I made a post but there’s a very good reason for my tardiness…..It’s just plain unadulterated Laziness……and a lack of good content. The hayrides have been OK …nothing to really talk about, the numbers have been fair but the turn out at the park are marginal at best. We helped out on the Fathers day pancake breakfast serving about forty people. We had fully intended to go do some sight seeing this week but Monday morning when I decided to do my walking for some strange reason I got the Crazy Notion I should do...

Jun 16, 2009 - The Campers Code and Friends New coach

Another week has come and gone here at Camp Gummy in the Michigan Mitten. Buy all accounts it was a pretty good week both for the weather and good wagon participation with the Friday night group breaking out in song. I even had one lady ask me if I would haul her and two bundles of fire wood to her site. Then an other time she bummed a ride to the shower house and when I asked if she’d like for me to haul her to the laundry she told me to just be quiet and drive the tractor. I tell ya, I get know respect at all. For the most part it’s very...

Jun 7, 2009 - A Quiet Week But The Mexican's Are Coming

It’s been another quiet somewhat subdued week here at Lakeside Park. Out of the four hayrides given we may have had twenty riders and I think that’s being generous…..we didn’t keep a tight head count. I guess you could contribute it to school being still in cession….or The State Of The Economy…your guess is as good as ours. There is a rumor that a large contingent of Mexicans are coming one of these weekends…I sure hope this ain’t going to be another Alamo Fiasco…I left my guns and Bowie Knife back in Maryland. From what I’m hearing the hay...

Jun 1, 2009 - Thankfull For Our Son's Answered Prayers & An Easy Weekend

Quiet…..That best describes how the weekend went here at Lakeside Camp Park. With a total of five hayrides we only had about thirty people ride the wagon. Cold could be one reason but mostly because school is still in and there aren’t that many young’ens at the park. I’m not complaining one bit…the less that ride the sooner we are back at the Phaeton & practicing our total relaxation techniques. One Big Concern that we had all weekend was about our son Chris and whether or not he was going to be keeping his job of twenty couple years with...

May 25, 2009 - Memorial Day in Michigan

I hope everyone’s Memorial Day weekend was a safe and enjoyable holiday. It was a very busy weekend for Jane and I with this being our first weekend to run the hayrides. The park was sold out and the hay wagon was a big draw with each trip filling the wagon to capacity, about twenty five souls on board. We ran the wagon three times on both Saturday, Sunday & once on Monday. Each time consisted of four times around the campground & four times around the lake for a total time of 1:15 minutes each hayride. Now you wouldn’t think driving (ten)...

May 18, 2009 - Week Two of Workamping

Week two of Workamping and the living has been easy. Other than helping to set up for the pot luck dinner on Saturday it’s been pretty easy going but that is about to change this Memorial day weekend. The park has a lot of events scheduled for the three day weekend. Some of the activities will include, Hayrides, kids bike parade, free Ice Cream, Music & dance, a Hole in One Contest, kids games and some kind of a Horse Race. I will start the hayrides on Saturday with three ride times at 11:00-3:00-7:00. Dependent upon the number of people...
