Jun 20, 2016 - Belleville, MI

Mon, 20 Jun: And a happy longest day of the year to you... Today's drive is a perfect example of the flexibility that our RV lifestyle affords. We awoke with approximately 215 miles to our final destination, the Wayne County (MI) Fairgrounds, and three days in which to do so. Yet, we had some decisions to make. We were in a perfectly nice site at the Indian Creek Campgrounds in Geneva-on-the-Lake and the office assured us we could stay another day if we so chose (Option #1). We'd also IDd a couple of RV parks in the Sandusky (OH) area,...

Jul 29, 2015 - Detroit and Surrounding Area

We arrived at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Belleville, MI on the 23rd. From this point we could drive to Detroit and see lights north of that location and southwest to see Grosse Ile, MI. When we knew we would be in the Detroit area to see some lights we asked our son if he could arrange a tour of Quicken Loans headquarters and he did. We met our guide, Adrian, in the atrium of one of their buildings. The atrium was beautiful with a water sculpture and a rimless pool below it. Adrian pointed out some gadgets mounted on the walls that...

Jul 19, 2014 - Belleville, MI - Wow, Another Year Already!

(Elena Writing) Happy Birthday to Me! Yep, another year gone and prayers for another healthy year ahead. We slept in after a very long day walking several miles at Greenfield Village. We decided to hang out and relax. Although we had already bought tickets to return to The Henry Ford to tour the museum, we will save it for another day. Ron made our weekly spam, eggs and rice for breakfast. If I could, I’d eat it every day. We later went out for lunch and we had leftovers for dinner. While Ron stayed home and worked on the computer, I walked...

Jul 18, 2014 - Belleville, MI - The Henry Ford, Greenfield Village

(Ron Writing) Yesterday we did some work at home and then left Fort Garatiot at about 2 PM. We drove around the north side of downtown Detroit to Belleville, MI where we found a fairly reasonably priced campground at the Wayne County Fair Grounds. Real bare-bones, just a parking spot on the grass with a 20A electrical outlet for $23/night. There aren’t many options in this urban area. This morning we went to see Greenfield Village at “The Henry Ford”. The Henry Ford in nearby Dearborn, MI has 5 main venues; Greenfield Village, The Henry...

Jun 9, 2013 - The Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, MI

Finally, we were able to go outside without jackets today....it might almost be Summer vacation!!! About 10AM we headed into Dearborn, about a 20 minute drive from our campsite, to the Henry Ford Museum. We were told that it would take 4 to 5 hours to see it...and sure enough, we spent just about 5, with a stop for coffee and pie in the middle, of course. The museum has many areas that take you from early days in America to the present. One area had horse drawn farm equipment, then early steam powered equipment. There were areas of...

Jun 8, 2013 - Coloma/St Joseph to Belleville, Michigan

Had some bumpy road on our way to Belleville, MI, today. In fact, the pantry door had not been latched before leaving the KOA, so Mom and I crawled around on our hands and knees picking up dry angel hair pasta noodles before we could do anything else to set up camp. No big deal, but we probably need to do a closer review of our checklist upon breaking camp. Tonight's campground is also Wayne County fairgrounds, so it's a huge place with lots of grassy fields for Topper and me to wander through. The place holds lots of RVs, but there are...

Aug 24, 2012 - "Michigan Mini" Rally In The Rearview Mirror

From Wayne County Fairgrounds & RV Park - Belleville, MI The 2012 “Michigan Mini” Rally is in our rearview mirror………It was for the second year held at the Little River Casino in Manistee, MI but this year had more attendees than either of the first two rallies. It was attended by 18 HitchHiker owners and their spouses and two “SOB” (some other brand) owners and spouses making our daily 5 o’clock happy hour get togethers a gathering of 40. This made for lots of travel stories across the U.S. since the last rally a year ago. As was the...

Home Sweet RV - 2012

Jul 2, 2012 - On To Michigan To Meet With Charlie, Echo & Princess

Today we were driving up to Belleville, MI (just west of Detroit) to meet our traveling buddies for this trip, Charlie & Echo. They had been on the road for a couple weeks for some rallies. They were meeting us in the Wal-Mart parking lot. We had a great drive that day. Beautiful weather. But we drove through some areas where recently there had been alot of wind with downed trees and limbs. I haven't mentioned that we have purchased a RV GPS. It's made by Rand McNally. We've named him "Randy". Get it, "Rand" McNally...."Randy"? You put in...

Jun 8, 2012 - Victorians in Traverse City

Today we drove to Paul's Auto in Kingsley, Michigan to have the electric brakes fixed on the fifth wheel. We dropped the trailer off and then we drove over to Traverse City for the afternoon. While we were there we took a drive around the more historic residential district and took a few pictures of the homes in that area. Around 5 PM, we drove back to Kingsley and picked up the fifth wheel and headed on down the road. We ended up spending the night at the Camping World in Belleville, Michigan. The brakes seem to be working fine now so...

Our 2012 Travels

Aug 31, 2007 - Henry Ford Museum #1

We arrived in the small town of Belleville about 25 miles west of Detroit tired, hungry & just plain worn out! We traveled 192 miles again today, we do not like moving at the pace we are. However, you can't have it both ways, so I will try to stop whining & comment that we are so blessed to be enjoying our lives the way that we are! It is certainly our choice to head East for the fall season. And we wouldn't change a thing... We located an RV park in Trailer Life that is actually the Fairgrounds/RV Park Combo. It is not bad, not our best...
