Aug 5, 2019 - St. Lorenz and Alpena, MI

2019-08-06.St. Lorenz and Alpena, MI As I mentioned, we stayed in the St. Lorenz Churchgrove Campground in Frankenmuth, Michigan. It's sign says: "Gott Schutze Unsere Camper" which translates to "God Protects Our Campers" and this Lutheran congregation owns not only this campground but much of the prime real estate in Frankenmuth, including a day care, elementary school, adult school and a stunning church. Sunday morning, I got up early while Bob slept and took Roadie to find the cathedral. It took me 20 minutes but, it wasn't hard to see...

Jun 22, 2019 - Alpena, Michigan - June 21-22

We left the Mackinac area with no specific campground in mind. We only knew that we wanted to stop somewhere in the Alpena Area. Just before getting to the city limits we saw a sign for Alpena County Campground so we turned down the road and checked it out. The price was a slight bit higher than we wanted to pay but we made the decision to stay. We got a nice site on a peninsula between two inland lakes. The back of our rv faced the morning sunrise over one lake and the front of the rv faced the sunset on the other lake. We only stayed one...

Jun 16, 2018 - Presque Isle Lighthouses

We drove up the coast a little today to visit the lighthouses of Presque Isle. Presque Isle is a peninsula that sticks out into Lake Huron. The area is kind of remote, but there are numerous homes (vacation or year round?). The Old Presque Isle Lighthouse is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses on the Great Lakes. On July 5, 1838, the year after Michigan gained statehood, Congress appropriated $5,000 for  construction of a lighthouse at Presque Isle. By 1868, less than 30 years after construction, the original Keeper’s House was rapidly ...

Jun 15, 2018 - Moving into the Mitten

We left the "thumb" and drove into the "mitten" of Michigan. Our route took us south on M-25 along the shore of Saginaw Bay, across M-13 through the Bay City area, and north along the western shore of Saginaw Bay on US-23. We ended the day outside Alpena, MI at Camper's Cove RV Park & Canoe Livery. It's located on an impoundment of the Thunder Bay River called Lake Wynah. It's a nice campground, but the location of the water and electric hookup was a little strange. They were located all the way at the from of the bacon site and on the...

Oct 11, 2014 - Sunset over our Campsite

Following our great day of touring to lighthouses, we finished off the day with a lakeside meal at sunset. These pics show what a beautiful evening it was ... some great sunset views. The final event of our time with our friends Randy and Holly was another showdown of Euchre. Randy and I beat the girls well the night before ... and true to fashion we did it again tonight. Too bad, girls ... and quit calling us those nasty names ...

Oct 11, 2014 - Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival Tour

It was a touring day with our friends Randy and Holly. Directions in hand, Bob was the navigator ... steering wheel in hand, Randy was the pilot ... gabbing in the back seat, Bonnie and Holly were the back seat drivers and otherwise smart-alicks. Enjoyed seeing several lighthouses ... lots of great sights, stairs to climb, and laughter. Good time was had by all.

Oct 9, 2014 - Along Lake Huron

Following our wonderful Niagara Falls experience, we pointed the truck / camper west to begin our return trip to Wisconsin. Decided to spend the night on Lake Huron ... to complete our "Great Lakes Experience", in that we have camped on the shores of each of the five Great Lakes in the last 30 days. No Provincial Park sites right on the water ... but within sound of the wave making white caps ... just on the other side of the dunes. This park reminded us a lot of Indiana Dunes Park on our second day out for this trip, on Lake Michigan. We...

Aug 21, 2014 - Sunrise side of the state - Alpena

On Thursday morning, Jay took a short bike ride before we left on our 2 hour drive to Alpena to visit our friends Diane and Jim. I used to work with Diane in San Diego 26 years ago before she and Jim moved to Alpena to raise their children. We even went to their wedding. But it's sure been a while since we've seen them. Our GPS took us on an interesting route to Alpena and told us to turn on a dirt road for 17 miles. Well, Jay went right past that turn! So we ended up having to go around the next lake for an extra 20 miles added to the...

Jul 13, 2014 - Alpena, MI - Lake Huron Drive & Shipwrecks Museum

(Ron Writing) We left Mackinaw City early this afternoon and headed southeast on US-23, which follows closely along the west shore of Lake Huron. This is a good highway, not very busy and quite scenic. About 80% of the time our views of the lake were obscured by the heavily forested land beside the highway but there were many places with nice unobstructed views. On much of this drive there is a single row of lake front homes between the highway and the shoreline. We made a couple stops to enjoy scenic views of the lake but our first real...

Aug 7, 2013 - Not so much truth in advertising - a.k.a Alpena

We set the alarm for bright and early to regretfully leave the Les Cheneaux Islands. The weather looked to be good for travel early in the day and then developing into some challenging stuff in the afternoon so we got going pretty early. Unfortunately we had to wait for the fuel dock at Murtaugh boat works to open because they had closed early the day before. We also ended up having to plan an additional fuel stop as Murtaughs felt it was ok to charge $5.29 per gallon being the only game in town and that was our planned fuel stop for this...

Jul 19, 2013 - Two Great Stops

Days 136 - 137 of The Big Trip On the 18th, I was back to normal and really wanted to visit the island, so Sandi went with me. We made it for the 9:00am ferry. As we approached the island, we could see it was raining and we'd brought no umbrella. By the time we docked, it wasn't raining anymore and we started walking. We didn't have time to do a lot, so we chose to go see the Grand Hotel. There are no cars allowed on the island and all transportation is done by carriage, bicycle, cart, feet, etc. Beautiful draft horses were everywhere and...

Aug 10, 2012 - To Alpena, MI

We head south toward Lake Michigan. We stop. “What’s that?” We see many Sandhill Cranes in a field. We now know where they spend the summer. At Lake Michigan we head east on Route 2. We stop at an overlook .We can see an ore hauler in the distance. We like the Great Lakes. We continue toward Mackinac Bridge. I am not thrilled that the wind is picking up. I promise myself that I will look around as we cross! At the bridge, we see the same warning as in 2010. “High Winds - Speed Limit 20 Miles per Hour” We put the flashers on. There is road...
