Aug 10, 2012 - To Alpena, MI
We head south toward Lake Michigan. We stop. “What’s that?” We see many Sandhill Cranes in a field. We now know where they spend the summer. At Lake Michigan we head east on Route 2. We stop at an overlook .We can see an ore hauler in the distance. We like the Great Lakes. We continue toward Mackinac Bridge. I am not thrilled that the wind is picking up. I promise myself that I will look around as we cross! At the bridge, we see the same warning as in 2010. “High Winds - Speed Limit 20 Miles per Hour” We put the flashers on. There is road...

August 18, 2011 Left Port Crescent SP and planned to go to Tawas SP located north along Route 23 along Lake Huron. Unfortunately, they had no room. Went further north to Harrisville SP and they had no spaces big enough for us. That is the problem with the state parks. Trying to maneuver around the campground loops is bad enough but trying to get into the spaces is almost impossible. So, left there and found a spot for three nights outside of Alpena, MI at Camper’s Cove campground with a beautiful big spot along the Thunder River. Took all...

Jul 15, 2011 - Another Chamber of Commerce Day
Great weather has been travelling with us during the last 2 weeks and it continued yesterday as we drove further up the coast of Lake Huron MI. We got a little late start after sleeping in a bit but did manage to put on over 100 miles. First stop was in Tawas a a park to do a little business telephoning and stretch our legs. This park reminded both of us of the Freeport NY park at the end of the Nautical Mile where my father and I go. Then on to Sturgeon Pt. What a view and a light house with a super museum depicting the nearly 200 years of...

Today started out just like it ended, very cold (in the 30's) and rainy. It was a good thing I packed another blanket. We drove north along the coast of Lake Huron, this area looks a lot like Bellingham, a lot of farms, woods, and fields. The coastal area is a lot like Birch Bay, but the water is very windblown and big waves. We decided to take a break and stay in a hotel tonight, so we're at a Best Western in Alpena,MI. The weather is better, sunny and about 50 out, but still cold with the wind blowing. Hoping to see some moose and elk...

June 15 Campers Cove Campground Alpena, MI We made it over the border today and into Michigan. I found a route that had some lighthouses and we stopped at three of them. We went up into the tower of two of the lighthouses where the actual light is located. One of them still had the Fresnel light operating. The stairs were winding and lots of fun for me since I get dizzy at the drop of a hat. The lighthouses we toured were being restored and had lots of donated old furniture in them that made it quite interesting. Since there are at least...

Aug 23, 2009 - Movin' On!
We attended the Church of the Straits (of Mackinaw) this morning. The Church of the Straits is "Presbyterian (U.S.A.) and United Methodist Federated. We accompanied Doyle and Arlene. It is a "local" church in that there were very few visitors/tourists, about 70 in attendance. We had a quick lunch in the motorhome, still in their driveway; then unhooked and put away, readying for departure. We shared goodbyes with Doyle and Arlene and were on the way. Right now we are about two hours south of Mackinaw City on the coast of Lake Huron in a...

We stayed two nights at Misty River Cabin and RV Resort in Walland Tennessee. Misty River got it's name from an old moonshiner from Townsend, who said when he made his brew from the water in the river and sampled some of it, the river would look all misty to him and the name stuck. The moonshine stills are long gone, but the river is still just as beautiful as ever. I think if I got into the moonshine, things may look a bit misty to me too. On are first day, we drove to Gatlinburg. We had a great time just browsing the shops, having lunch...
