I can't believe this dream is about to happen on SATURDAY! Jun 2, 2011 - Washington D. C. day 6

Our last day in D.C. is today. We have had a wonderful time actually getting to know our Capital and actually seeing it without kids whining and running ahead of us. There actually were kids doing that, but we weren’t responsible for them! We spent several hours at the “Newseum” which is a new facility (private) that houses massive amounts of information about the news business over the last 600 years. It is a beautiful place and so well done. After we finished here, we just wandered around for a while. We went to the Museum of Natural...

Jun 1, 2011 - Washington D.C. - day 5

We didn’t go into the city early today because we knew it would be late before we would get back. We are getting used to the METRO and learning our way around. I downloaded an app for the D.C. Metro that shows the stations, schedules, train arrivals, delays, etc. It was worth the 99 cents. I purchased another app that gives walking directions. We have used that a lot, also. Hey, I just heard that gasoline prices are going down. Yea!!! We visited the “Crime and Punishment” Museum today. It’s not part of the Smithsonian. I thought it was...

May 31, 2011 - Washington D.C. - day 4

On a very, very hot day in D.C. (95+) we spent it indoors nearly all day. For the first time we drove the pick-up, rather than riding the metro. We parked in the garage under the cathedral ($16). I love buildings and architecture so this was a special tour for me - especially when it is mixed with spirituality. The last time I was here, the building was not finished and now it is. Of course, they are always adding things here and there. One of the most recent being that of the cross honoring those lost in the Pentagon during 9/11. Our...

May 30, 2011 - Washington C.D. - day 3

High temperature altered our plans today. I repaired a bicycle tire and we went grocery shopping. We have been planning on a tour at night and decided to do this on an air conditioned bus tonight. The tour was OK and it kept us out of the heat. We also took a break from the subway routine. Tomorrow we are scheduled to tour the Washington Cathedral... Bill There were people all over the place. We didn't attend the parade due to the heat, but there must have been a lot of bands because all of them were touring the monuments. They were having...

May 29, 2011 - Washington D. C. day 2

A very enjoyable day downtown. We knew it would be late coming back so we ate lunch in the RV and headed downtown right after noon. We spent some time in the Museum of Modern Art because it was close to the Metro station we emerged from. Like prairie dogs. We had 4 oclock reservations at a restaurant (Old Ebbitt Grill) by the White House that our guide recommended to us. Was a great place to eat. The oldest bar in Washington. We then tunneled underground and came up near the Capital. Were 2 1/2 hours early for the Memorial Day concert but...

May 28, 2011 - Washington D. C. - Day 1

This was a catch up day. We did laundry, ate lunch in the snack bar and made some plans. At 3 we decided to make a trial run downtown. We drove 5 miles to the Metro and then rode 45 minutes down to the Mall. The run was a success and we will probably travel downtown this way for the next 5 days. Brian I think I saw the guy still selling books. Looks a little older but he is doing well. We spent a little time in the Air and Space Museum and then made our way back the camper. We have plans for a Symphony concert on the capital lawn, a...

May 27, 2011 - Williamsburg to Silver Springs

No pictures, just a quick update tonight. We had planned to spend another night in Williamsburg, but discovered this morning that would require us to move for just one night as our place was reserved by a group for the week-end. I really didn't want to move for one night so we quickly packed-up and were off for Cherry Hills RV Campground. We are here, as planned, after a long 165 miles. Actually, the first 140 weren't bad at all. The traffic on the I-495 beltway around D.C. was pretty bad today. It probably is worse now. It took us 2 hours...

Sep 7, 2010 - 28,000 Bottles of Beer

Do you remember when you were a kid on a long trip and sang "100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" to pass the time? Well, we would have had to sing for 28,000 bottles, 1,000 per hour, to pass the 28 hours it took us to travel home. As an added bonus, we had to go through security three times before we reached the U.S.: the first time through usual security of X-ray of carry-ons and person, the second time at the gate before getting on the plane, and the third time at the refueling stop in Senegal, when we had to remove our carry-ons from the...

May 18, 2010 - Rained out

Greetings from Silver Spring! As we left Richmond, Virginia, it was rainy and cool. We checked with our host in Virginia Beach and they said they had the same weather and were expecting more of the same for Tuesday, so we decided to come home early. Today was my first day back to reality...laundry, mail, and other non-fun things. Soon, I'll start to edit my pictures and relive my great Southern adventure. I plan to share them with ya'll so you can enjoy them too. Thanks for taking this journey with me and for all your kind messages while I...

Apr 7, 2010 - Pooped from Packing

Dear Friends and Family, Well, I'm nearly finished packing and tomorrow starts our adventure through the Southern United States. The weather channel predicts rains, which is OK with me, since we will just be in the car all day driving. The rest of the week...delicious!...sunny and cooler, perfect for lots of walking around. I hope you can access my itinerary from this website. Until the next zany update, I'm saying so long for now. I'm glad you're able to come along with me on my travels. Julie
