The history lesson continues today at Antietam, which was the next battle after Harpers Ferry. Antietam's claim to fame - it was the deadliest single day of fighting unsurpassed in U.S. history. Over 23,000 men were killed or wounded during the 12 hours of fighting (one casualty every two seconds) on September 17, 1862 (about 5,000 men died). This battlefield visit was extremely interactive, unlike our previous days visit at Harpers Ferry.
