St Michaels, Maryland as expected had been a nice day trip on August 24th, a small coastal community founded in 1641, as with many ‘settlements’ this one began as a trading post, now it has become a place for us, the tourist to visit and see the different trades at work and to take a step back in time. Frederick Augustus Bailey, later known as Frederick Douglass a famous abolitionist also a representative in Haiti, worked as a slave in and near St. Michaels before he was able to escape from slavery in the 1830’s. Today we allowed ourselves a break from our history lessons and decided to explore the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Have you ever looked at a map of this area? Quite frankly, I had not (perhaps I slept through my geography classes). Here is this piece of land that lies east of the Chesapeake Bay and it is not part of just one state. No, it is part of Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. Hence, the nickname Delmarva. Really, when you take a look at it you wonder why Delaware and Virginia have a piece of this land.
