Sitting in the living room of the Verkouteren home, grazing through boxes of family photos - images of birthdays, outings, aunts, uncles, guests, lots of children - I felt sad. In just a few days this stately old colonial home in the leafy DC suburb of Somerset would be empty, rented to strangers. These rooms, these closets, bathrooms, and staircases - home to three generations and all the drama that implied, would be empty, and I wondered about ghosts.
