Feb 22, 2012 - Annapolis, MD (February 17 - 19, 2012)

After returning from New Orleans, with a day or two of calmer activity, I left on February 17, early in the AM from the Lafayette airport, eventually landing in Annapolis (from Lafayette to Houston to Newark to Baltimore). Not easy to get there, but well worth it for a weekend with some of my favorite buddies and YaYas -- Susan, Kathy, Ruth Ann, Annette, Peggy, Chigee (and Diane) This is bevy of fine women I met them through each of our state projects for services to students with deaf-blindness. We've done projects, research, training,...

Aug 25, 2011 - Washington, DC

We left Gettysburg fairly early on the 24th and went the few miles out of our way to see the Monocacy Battlefield. We learned a lot. In 1864, Lee had ordered Jubal Early to invade Maryland and head toward D.C. Grant had removed many of the troops guarding D.C. to support his attack on Richmond, so D.C. was not adequately defended. General Lew Wallace, of Ben Hur fame, learned of the coming attack and met Early’s army just south of Frederick on the Monocacy River. He lost the battle, but delayed Early for a day and Grant got reinforcements...

Jul 8, 2011 - Departure...early

With the threat of some summer storms and the need to be in Atlantic City on 12 July, we began to accelerate our plans for departing on the weekend. Fortunately, sister Mary arrived on Thursday to help with the embark. And, with a cupboard bare in the condo, we took the excuse to have a nice dinner at the Bistro on the Bay; a new Solomons restaurant just around the corner. The next morning after a quick goodbye to Mary and neighbors, we slipped the lines and departed at noon. For a couple of young at heart 69 year olds, it was good to be...

Mar 12, 2011 - Chesapeake VA to Annapolis MD

Well today was a good start with the very best of intentions to get a good few miles behind us but alas, we ended havin’ a slack one. After a workout on some good fitness gear, breaky of boiled eggs, (no microwave for Chris to recook the eggs thus makin’ a mess of the microwave) toast and tea. Back at our room we got engrossed with the news of the earthquake and tsunami headlining the news today. More sensationalisation of a disaster by the US press, anything to sell a story. So we didn’t get away till 10am. We found a Starbucks for a...

Oct 15, 2010 - Annapolis MD (Oct. 13 - 15, 2010)

Loretta and I then met Diane Kelly in Towson MD for Di's first visit with her O.D./naturopathic doc. Diane (and us too) learned a lot about diet and cancer; not something most MD's know much about. No sugar! No grains! No alcohol! etc. Changing the body environment so the chances of it happening again are slim. Way to go, Diane! I'll read the book and see how Pete and I can or will change parts of our diet. But, not until Monday, so a delicious dinner at Federal Inn with Diane, Peggy Lashbrook, Barb, Pete near the Annapolis waterfront -...

Sep 14, 2010 - Annapolis, Maryland

Saturday Mary and I were picked up at our campground in College Park MD by my cousins Jim & Nancy Powers who live in the Baltimore area, and we drove over to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD where we met Stephanie Rice another cousin who lives in the Annapolis area. Stephanie showed us around the scenic grounds which total 338 acres with buildings dating back to 1845 and tree shaded monuments of many courageous graduates who contributed to naval history. We went through the Main Chapel built in 1908 containing elaborate...

Sep 11, 2010 - Tailgate & Navy Georgia Southern Football Game

With the football game not starting before 3:30 PM, we had plenty of time to re-visit downtown Annapolis and again try to buy out the Midshipman's store. Stopped by the Registration room in the Marriott to pick up our class picture taken in front of the Chapel yesterday. Then went up to our 5th floor Hospitality Room which has a magnificent view of the harbor and Chesapeake Bay. Noted just below the hotel a rather large Mega Yacht flying a Marine Flag! One o'clock the Stadium ticket office opened and I hastened from the Best Western to the...

Sep 10, 2010 - Banquet at USNA Stadium N* Room

The grand event of the reunion was held at the Naval Academy Football stadium in the N-Star Banquet Room. This facility built only 10 years ago, is located below the West stands of the field. It is reserved only for alumni. The name comes from the varsity sport letter 'N'. A star is awarded and worn alongside the letter for the sport in which Navy beat Army in their annual rivilry. Bronze plaques adorn the walls of the room for each graduating class. Our plaque was situated just above an occupied table and I was unable to obtain a good...

Sep 10, 2010 - Company Luncheon

A rather new event in our reunions is a lunch with just the members of the company we were members of. The last two events we've met at a funky little place on Main St., Chick and Ruth's Delly, taking over the up stairs portion of the place. As the 15th Company had only four attending the reunion, we invited them to join us. Again, the four companies of the 4th Battalion, 13th, 14th, 15th, & 16th were closely intermeshed all four years attending classes together and were all well acquainted. Joining us for the 2nd reunion was Howie Cohen...

Sep 10, 2010 - Memorial Service

We began the day with breakfast at the Best Western Motel. Present were two of our class with impressive credentials, John Raster (7) and Allan Brown (13). John, as a Plebe (Freshman), with prior college football experience at the University of Detroit, returned an intercepted pass* in our 1951 Army-Navy game, from one yard inside the end zone, 101 yards for a touchdown. A record which still stands. He now lives near South Bend, Indiana where his three sons attended Nortre Dame and are now all Physicians. Allan, entered the Marine Corps. on...
