Aug 28, 2018 - Schoodic Peninsula - August 27 - September 2

The week at Schoodic Woods has been most enjoyable. We enjoyed hiking, biking, and SITTING!! The weather has been marvelous with nighttime temperatures requiring moderate heat. During our time here we hiked Blueberry Hill and rode our bikes around the peninsula. We also visited Roosevelt Hall at the Schoodic Institute. "Schoodic Institute exists in a close public-private partnership with Acadia National Park. Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park was created after the former Navy Base on Schoodic Point, completely within the Schoodic...

Aug 16, 2018 - Schoodic Peninsula - August 16 - 18

Our time at Scoodic Woods has been exactly what we intended - - RELAXING!! The campground has been extraordinarily quiet with multiple opportunities for trail walking and biking. We’ve enjoyed the days off the road. “Acadia National Park on the Schoodic Peninsula in Maine is the only part of the park that is located on the mainland. It has very similar geological features as Mount Desert Island but is more secluded and has less commercial development in the surrounding villages. Aug 15, 2018 - Day Trip to Bar Harbor

When considering the area and the activities, a decision was made that we would change our camping plans while here. Instead of camping at Seawall next week, we plan to camp for a week in Trenton about 15 miles outside the national park. We plan to then return to Schoodic for another week. It’s too difficult to spend two+ hours making the drive back and forth to Mt Desert Island. After taking care of the above at the campground, we spent the remainder of the day in Bar Harbor (the town). We stopped at the park visitors’ center to gather our...

Aug 14, 2018 - Move to the Schoodic Peninsula, Maine

The departure from Bangor was under gray clouds. It was an easy drive on state routes. The closer we came to Schoodic the thicker the fog became. We are camping in the national park, but we do have electric and water. The sites are all pull through and spacious. Schoodic Peninsula is across (east) the harbor from Mount Desert Island (Bar Harbor). It is about an hour away by car. It is very quiet here. The crowds are on Mt Desert Island because that’s where the major sites of Acadia are located. We plan to split our time between here and...

Jul 19, 2008 - Down East Day 3: Riding the Schoodic Peninsula

It’s the little things in life that make it special: more wild blueberry sampling during our morning walk; a freshly baked blueberry muffin purchased from a giant building shaped and painted like a blueberry; gorgeous lavender, blue, white, yellow, and orange wildflowers growing along the roadways plus pink beach roses along the coastline; a beautiful ride along the Schoodic Peninsula; a picnic lunch on the granite rocks while watching the surf crashing ashore; hiking over the rocks and the basalt “black dikes” after lunch; a porcupine...
