Oct 12, 2017 - On the road again.....

Yes, we are on the road again.....and we made it to Holden, Maine. Our first stop today was in St. Stephen, NB at the Ganong Chocolate museum! We discovered that the Ganong family for five generations has been making candy in the same place. Well they do have a modern facility now but the original buildings house the museum and the store. We watched a couple of videos, got a lesson on cacao, watched some ladies hand dipping chocolates just like they did in the beginning days and ate some delicious chocolates. Next we continued on to the...

Sep 1, 2015 - Holden, Maine

Days 71-73 (August 29th – 31st) Holden, Maine Our 73 mile trip from Cushing to Holden was uneventful; we had nice weather. This was the first of two stops in the Bangor area for this trip. Maryann taught at the University of Maine and her good friend, Helen, is still living here. Helen’s husband, David, and Maryann started teaching at the Bangor campus at the same time. Unfortunately, David died suddenly a few years ago; but, Helen still lives here in the summer and in Florida in the winter. Helen permitted us to use her address to receive...

Jul 20, 2013 - Mount Desert Island

We’re staying at Red Barn Campground in Holden, near Bangor. The sites here are pretty narrow so we’re very close to our neighbor on one side but other than that its ok. Today is Christmas in July and there’ll be all sorts of activities for the kids, I hear Santa will probably arrive this afternoon and his sleigh (golf cart) will be loaded with gifts! We’ve had to extend our stay here for a few days because of the difficulty of getting reservations in New Brunswick. We now have reservations for our first six nights. We’ll spend our time...

Sep 16, 2008 - Back in the USA ... Acadia Nat'l Park

We're back ... in the USA!!! After almost two months in Canada, we crossed over into northern Maine early this week. We landed just south of Bangor in a nice campground a short distance from Acadia Nat'l Park. Our trip to Acadia Nat'l Park today was great ... the weather was beautiful ... sunny and warm. The park is actually on an island ... Mt Desert Island ... directly on the Atlantic Ocean. Sedimentary deposits of mud, molten magma, glaciers and shoreline erosion formed this beautiful place. It is the focal point of tourism and vacations...

Jul 7, 2008 - Canaan, ME, to Holden, ME

This trip was very short - about 50 miles - but a world of difference in attitude of the local folks we have met. We are here for LOBSTER and to visit our friends, Reggie and Eileen, whom we met at Tybee Island in February! During our stay in Holden, we took several side trips. We visited Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park twice - photos on another entry. We took off and headed east on Coastal Route 1 and saw a boat sitting in a cove - very high and very dry! Found a really small campground sitting on a quiet cove; this would be a...
