It was a bright sunny day when we bid farewell to Belfast and eased down the Penobscot to Islesboro. From afar the island is relatively flat, unlike the Camden Hills that lie to its west. Further, the size of the homes on the island are huge compared to most of coastal Maine, and unexpected in a place served only by the Lincolnville Ferry. It seems that around the turn of the twentieth century, wealthy families built homes on the island to avoid the summer heat in Boston and New York.
