Aug 18, 2019 - Wild Hogs in Maine

The other reason we settled in Bethel Maine for a month was because that was the location of our annual motorcycle group ride with our friends – the Wild Hogs. If you have been reading my blog for a while, you will recall that the core group of Wild Hogs started back in 2012 with a trip to Italy where we rode motorcycles through Tuscany for a week. Every year since then we have met in some part of the US or Canada for a reunion ride. Each year a different couple is in charge of planning the rides and making the arrangements for...

Jul 30, 2019 - Vacation time!

Once we got Mo safely tucked away at Pleasant River Campground in West Bethel Maine, we were ready to head out on vacation! I know some people think we are ALWAYS on vacation because we are retired and travel full-time in Mo, but we don’t consider ourselves to be on vacation unless we are AWAY from Mo! We drove BAT to Portland Maine early in the morning on July 30th and parked at a hotel near the airport. We had looked into taking a shuttle to the airport from Bethel and also looked at parking BAT at the airport, but it was much more...

Jul 22, 2019 - Bethel Maine

After our week at Lake George was over, we headed east again on July 22nd to Bethel Maine. If it seems like we were bouncing around a bit, we were! The reason we headed back to Maine was to get in the vicinity of where our annual motorcycle ride was going to be held. Some of you may remember that we have a group of friends who get together every year and ride motorcycles somewhere in the US. This year, our ride destination was Maine, so we positioned ourselves in the area so we wouldn’t have to rent a motorcycle this year and could ride...

Sep 21, 2018 - Bar Harbor, ME to Bethel, Me

September 21, 2018 We had a very efficient early morning. On one of our walks in Bar Harbor we found Everyday Joe which had a very nice laundromat with many German machines, a Shell gas station and an excellent diner with very fresh, inexpensive food. Our wash was done in 24 minutes! (just enough time for us to finish our breakfast sandwiches and coffee.). Drying was done in less than 30 minutes. I want a Huebsch washer and dryer!! Grocery shopped and on the road by 10:00. As we pulled into Bar Harbor on Wednesday the dreaded check engine...

Sep 29, 2015 - Bethel Maine

We knew the “Fall Colors” part of our trip was going to be a bust before we departed Manchester, New Hampshire and headed to Bethel, Maine to meet up with Carmen’s sister Deb and her husband Mark. The unusually warm weather was delaying the process and there was very little color showing. On the day we were to leave Bethel we took a loop drive west and north into New Hampshire – about 95 miles - looking for color. It was slightly better, but nothing spectacular. You can’t out guess Mother Nature! Bethel is a nice small town with pottery and...

Jun 11, 2014 - Getting "Tired" in Maine

The drive from Davenport, NY to Bethel, ME was longer than we imagined, and although our butts were sore, our eyes were treated to some very nice scenery. What a great place to spend the hot summer months; lush green mountains, mild weather, open spaces, and all within a stone’s throw of White Mountain National Forest. The campgrounds up here can be relatively pricey, but considering it’s in the 70’s most of the time and there’s plenty to see and do, we’re happy to call it home for a couple of months. New England is the northeast region of...

Jul 13, 2011 - On the river

We elected to stay an additional night so we could take advantage of the kayak trips on the river from our campground. We were the only two scheduled for the 11 AM shuttle up river. We packed a lunch, rain jackets and filled up the camelbacks. We were on the river for 3 1/2 hours for the 10 mile trip. There were a few ripples but generally a nice gentle current. It was perfect weather while we were on the river but started raining after we got back. Bill

Jul 12, 2011 - Golf finally

When we checked in the parking attendant mentioned that with a coupon we could golf for free at the local country club. He brought over the local paper with the coupon. With that much incentive we rented a cart and spent 4 hours on the local course. I think we got our moneys worth. Laundry tonight and a meatloaf dinner in the camper. The battery is charged in the new camera so we should have some more pictures. Bill My golf sandals gave me blisters on both my feet (and I wasn't even walking), but it was a lovely day. I got much better by...

Jul 11, 2011 - Bethel, Maine

On the road again. We are headed to a scenic area on the west side of Maine, the town of Bethel. Had to stop in Bangor for a new camera and a Starbucks. The camera was on sale. Can't say the same thing about the latay. Our old camera was compact and hard to hold. So it bounced a lot. The new one is bigger and has image stabilization. I think that makes it easier to hold. Our campground tonight is part of a canoe and kayak rental business. There is also golf course near by. We may spend a few days here. For the first time in 3 weeks we have...

Sep 11, 2010 - Bethel, Maine

When we left this morning headed towards Bethel, Maine it was drizzling. This was a shame as we were driving through the White Mountains. There were some spectacular views along the way. We then drove along the Kancamagus Highway, again with some spectacular vistas. We stopped off in North Conway as we’d heard there were some outlet shops there. To be honest it was a bit of a let-down, it was one main street with lots of outlet stores and the only one we looked in, Columbia Sports, didn’t seem to have any bargain buys. We popped into a...

Jun 11, 2010 - Bethel, Maine to Flagstaff Lake

After talking to our friends, we decided to take a scenic diversion into the northern part of Maine. We travelled up US 17 to the Rangeley and Flagstaff Lakes area. There were not many houses, but lots of lakes and rivers. The Rangeley Lake viewpoint was gorgeous overlooking all of the lakes. We were told it is called the 'heightoflakes' area meaning you can see Quebec, Maine and New Hampshire from this high point. We parked the truck next to Flagstaff Lake to do a geocache and a nice walk alongside the lake seeing a couple loons on the...

Sep 11, 2009 - Maine to St. Andrew's

After a brisk walk around Bethel , ME, we met Jan and Skip and went to breakfast at the Crossroads Diner. It’s a great local place that we found last year. Had a wonderful breakfast and began our journey to St. Andrew’s, New Brunswick, Canada. As we had to travel right past Stony Brook Campground in Hanover, we stopped in to visit with our workamper friends from last year, Beth and Norman, Sandy, Janet, and OT and Noreen along with owners Bruce and Shirley. It was great seeing all of them. We left them around 11 am and we were on our way....
