Jun 12, 2018 - Bass Harbor

Tues., June 12th – It was a relaxing day of driving the east peninsula of Mt. Desert Island today. Now that we have a grandson on board a USCG cutter, seeing a Coast Guard sign has special meaning to us. So we wheeled right in at the Southwest Harbor USCG station, an interesting and busy lobstering port. Did you know there are over 100 million lobsters harvested in Maine annually?! It's no surprise this area provides 90% of the nations lobsters. Next, we drove to Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, another Coast Guard managed area. We had to climb...

Sep 22, 2014 - Bass Harbor

Today we were very lucky, the fog lifted following a foggy morning and we were able to view much of the Park as we traveled through it. The Bass Harbor light house is one of the most photographed light houses in the country. I cannot due it justice. Following the Bass Harbor trip we came back to camp to regroup and head out to Schoodic Point which is located about an Hour from Bar Harbor yet is still part of Acadia National Park. I have made a second entry with some video's taken at Schoodic Point.

Sep 21, 2012 - Freeport, ME

After some early morning shopping at LL Bean, we crossed the street to Linda Bean's restaurant and had eggs benedict with lobster and crab. We took US Hwy 1 N out of Freeport. We saw a sign for Owl's Head Transportation Museum and stopped there. What a display! We walked from room to room viewing vintage aircraft, cars, and motorcycles. Quite a display. When we left, we met more old cars on the road headed south. We learned that there was a car show nearby this weekend and they were headed there. At Ellsworth, we crossed the causeway onto...

Aug 28, 2009 - Exploring Mt. Desert Island

Well, John broke out the handy-dandy heater this morning. He said it was 50 degrees in here when he got up. It felt good to have the heavy blankets on the bed and we both slept great. What a difference a week makes. Last week it was AC early in the morning. -- It was a brisk but beautiful morning and we packed another picnic lunch and headed out early. We wanted to explore the rest of Mt. Desert Island today. We turned right out of the park and headed onto any roads that would lead us towards the water. We were pretty disappointed until we...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Jul 9, 2008 - The quiet side

The west side of Mount Desert Island - Wednesday, July 9 Today we checked out of our campsite at Blackwoods Campground and drove a scenic 25 miles over to Seawall Campground, on what the locals call ‘the quiet side’ of the island. This is the west side, and it’s’ the side that is farthest from Bar Harbor and all the craziness over there. (Yesterday a big cruise ship came in and doubled the population of the town.) On the way we passed a number of spacious harbors, made less spacious by the receding tide. Tides here average 10 to 12 feet,...

Aug 15, 2007 - Bass Harbor Lighthouse

Hello Everybody, Ok, I've done it again. Remember when I climbed up on those rocks near Mt. Rushmore, then made up my mind that I was going to climb Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, well this time I wanted to see the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. I know sometimes it seems like I just don't have any sense at all, but this is the only life we get, you have to work very hard to get the absolute most out of it. The problem is that this lighthouse has someone living in it (now wouldn't that be a hoot), anyway that means that we can't just walk down the...
