Apr 23, 2013 - A relic of the past
Sulphur, LA, We started today with a tour aboard the M/V Sam Houston for a 90-minute round-trip cruise along the Houston Ship Channel. We saw the largest refinery in the nation operating, scrap being loaded onto barges, a grain elevator dumping grain into a ship, container ships, HUGE ships everywhere, tug boats, various flags (many from Greece or Cyprus), ship workers waving from high up in their ships, a huge pile of gypsum, tires lined up against docking areas, etc.; most of which is not a pretty sight (or smell). We also saw the site...

Dec 31, 2012 - Sulphur, LA
Sulphur, Louisiana! Despite the name it appears to be a nice spot and the RV park is very nice, although it is in the middle of no where. This is another one night stay, and I am finding one night stays to be very tiring because of driving every day plus all the rest of the chores in moving. I'll be glad when we can spend a few days in one place.

Mar 4, 2012 - Louisiana Saturday Night
The song is pronounced Luzianna Saturday Night but when I looked it up it is spelled as the state. The locals pronounce the state differently than the rest of us. We lazed around a lot today but really hit it hard late. We went to visit Calvin and Carolyn a mile or so away. As we chatted, Carolyn brought out strawberry shortcake then Calvin sent us off with a bit of boudan a Cajun meat sausage. Then we headed to a full Cajun restaurant for dinner. The craw-fish etouffee was excellent. The two girls fixed the wardrobe doors which house...

Mar 3, 2012 - Get me my Sulphur pills
We are back in Sulphur Louisiana at Aunt Carolyn's house but Aunt Carolyn isn't here. She and Gordon are in Florida on their own trip. We were here very early in our adventure. Carolyn's daughter Marcy came to get out of the snow and asked us to come see her on our way through. We last saw Marcy when we were in her home town of Cheyenne WY. We left our beautiful campsite in Texas and took the scenic route, actually the long cut. It was a nice ride and much better than the interstate. We stopped in Port Arthur for lunch and I got a much...

Apr 15, 2011 - Visitin' and visitors
This was a laid back day not much going on. Gordon and Carolyn are buying a new SUV and Gordon got 2 SUVs for the day to try out. We went to visit their friend Carolyn and Calvin a few miles away and just got to visit with Carolyn since Calvin was helping his son constucting a home. Later that evening Carolyn and Calvin came over and the 6 of us had a very nice time. We are all campers and it was interesting swapping stories on the foibles and triumphs, fuel economy and low bridges. It was a relaxing and enjoyable day unfortunitely the...

Apr 14, 2011 - Lazy Day
We are still here with Aunt Carolyn and Gordon. Didn't do much yesterday. Carolyn and Shirley went antiquing after we had a nice lunch at Cracker Barrel. Gordon and I went grocery shopping for Shirley and me, we went multiple places to try and get valve extenders for the inside wheels on the big honkin' dually. Finally I decided to have the Ford dealer do it when I get the oil changed next week. I can put my own air in the tires because we have an on board air compressor that fills the air shocks. While we were trying to "do it ourselves"...

Apr 13, 2011 - Aunt Carolyn
We drove the back roads (speed limits up to 65 mph even tho we go 55) great way to see the country, to Sulphur, La to visit Aunt Carolyn. What a neat story. She is married to Gordon. They both had lost their spouses and reunited having grown up together in the same grade in a small town in Western NY State. Nice to see how things work out. Not enough time or space to tell all the Aunt Carolyn stories (we have known her for 25 years) but she is INTEGRAL in the lives of Shirley, me, Darci and Collins. When I was transferred from Buffalo to...

Mar 17, 2011 - Sulphur, LA
We arrived in Sulphur today. It was a tiring drive for Brad. He did all the driving today. We were not on a highway from College Station down to Houston and then once we got on Rte. 10 in Houston, there were very few rest areas for us to change drivers. It was good to finally get out of Texas. It's about 890 miles across Texas on I-10 and we detoured up into the Hill Country. We have found a wonderful RV Park here, A-1 Rv Park & Motel. The grass is green, there is a pond in the middle. We are on a cement pad with a patio. There are full...

May 6, 2010 - across Texas
First real day on the road, it’s a long way across Texas and we had planned to stop near Houston but even with our stop for lunch, What a good time, we stopped in New Braunfels at the I-hop and had a great meal and a good visit with Ava and Norton. It was still early afternoon and plenty warm. So as we were going to stop at a rest area with no power, etc., we just decided to take turns driving and go further until almost sunset so it would be cooler to stop and sleep. Well, I took over for my turn and Dave fell asleep in the back with the...

While you walk about the Alligators will cross the paths you walk on not that it happened to us. It was very windy here but still hot. Loads of different herons, egrets etc. We also saw a Cotton Mouth Water Moccassin Snake it's the most common...

Nov 7, 2009 - Beach Scenes
The dullest stretch of coast has much to offer - Saturday, November 7 Before heading to Louisiana we took a last walk on Galveston Beach - not the bay side this time, but the gulf side where the surf rolls in. The beach is wide and flat and empty - stretching for miles in either direction. In the mist at both ends you can see houses and development. The State Park is an oasis between them. At water’s edge a couple was feeding and photographing a flock of gulls - the woman throwing food in the air while the man aimed his camera into the...
