Apr 22, 2011 - A quickie stop in Louisiana.

Hooray I drove over 300 miles today without getting sleepy. We took a very interesting route using the 49 to travel north up to the I-20. It was a good 4 lane road and had plenty to hold one’s interest along the way. Of course back on the interstate it was the same boring drive, 18 wheelers in abundance and miles and miles of nothing. The one and only Rest Area we came upon in Louisiana was closed, so our only stop to walk Gucci was at the Louisiana Welcome Center. I must say we REALLY felt welcome at their center …. The ladies were plying...

Living our RV Dream!

Apr 5, 2011 - Shreveport , Louisiana

We arrived in Shreveport early afternoon, we are parking in the Horseshoe Casino parking lot for the night. When we arrived in town we decided to fill up with fuel first thing, before parking. We went to the Flying J where we get our discount, and even with that we payed $3.88 a gallon. This part isn't much fun! We knew from our Casino Camping book that between Shreveport and Bossier there were around seven casinos here. We went to Sam's Town, and the Horseshoe, and didn't have any luck. We were surprised that the casinos were all very...

Mar 29, 2011 - Shreveport, Louisiana

t rained off and on all morning as we traveled east. The trees gradually got taller as we moved east. By the time we reached the state of Louisiana, the trees were as tall and lush as those found in Southern Ontario. It is a big contrast to the desert, sand, and cacti we became accustomed to for the last few months. We arrived at Shreveport by mid-afternoon, setup camp, and went Walmart shopping. Glenna bought a couple of plastic wine glasses that she really likes, and would like to get a couple more. Unfortunately, the last few stores we...

West Coast Trip 2011

Dec 20, 2010 - Shreveport . . . . Not!

Well, it was bound to happen! We were up early, J had already hooked up the car, and all we were waiting on was the gate near the RV park to allow outgoing traffic at 0800 when the work traffic lessened and it resumed to two-way. And we were out of that gate about 4 minutes after 0800 heading west out of Alabama. Weather was nice, reached Mississippi in good time and even made it all the way through the state without even having to gas up and were on I-20, no construction and traffic flowing smoothly. 292 miles later we entered Louisiana...

Nov 20, 2010 - Shreveport, LA

Spent the wseekend at Diamond Jack's RV Resort and Casino in Shreveport, Louisiana. We have been here before and I forgot how loud and often the trains go by. Not the most restful park we have ever been too. And quite a change from the quiet and remoteness of the Corps parks we had been staying at in Arkansas. We tried our luck at the casino several nights and walked away with our shirts, but not much else. Sue ended up $25 to the good and Ed was out $20. I also forgot how smoky the casinos can be and now we have to air everything out. We...

Nov 3, 2010 - Bayou Country

Talk about a place to spend Halloween!! We are a little south of Shreveport, LA, in Bistineau State Park, that others have aptly described as "primordial." It's an apt description for the place. Heavy dark Cypress Trees, laden with Spanish Moss, almost no one around....a lake that has been drained due to aquatic invasive species (more on this later), and a gray drizzle falling. The drive across Louisiana was an eye-opener as far as rural poverty goes. We are here for the night, watching for alligators and coral snakes. Branch Lake this is...

Driving Miss Daisy

Oct 20, 2010 - Day 98 - Denton, TX to Shreveport, LA

Today we left Denton and had to drive through parts of Dallas before getting on I-20 headed for Shreveport. I do not like big city traffic, especially when I am driving the coach. We noticed that there was a turnpike in honor of President George Bush (not sure which one) and also Lyndon Johnson. The Interstate interchanges are a nightmare to look at. If it weren't for the signs, you would not know which ramp to take. On one interchange, you had three options when you took the exit ramp. After Dallas, we passed cities of Forney, Terrell,...

Cope's Trek

Sep 2, 2010 - Tall Pines

This is a very busy park in Shreveport, close to I-20. It was formally a KOA park so it has some of those amenities. The road outside the park was in the process of being expanded so there was construction but it wasn't too bad. We decided to stay 2 nights instead of one and we went into a couple of casinos in Shreveport. It turns out they weren't much to see. Routing: 325 miles US-45, I-20 Note - Roads all around Shreveport are very bouncy. Not potholed but poorly made.

Summer - 2010

Sep 1, 2010 - Shreveport, Louisiana & beyond

We were off for a 7 hour drive from Mississippi through Louisiana and into Texas. We left Vicksburg, Mississippi and crossed the Mississippi River for the last time on this trip. We did this quite a few times earlier in the trip when we went into Memphis and from Illinois to Iowa and back. We drove through Louisiana and before we left the state, we stopped in Shreveport at the Libby Glass Outlet, which is always a lot of fun. It was nice to take a break for an hour and do something fun considering we have such a long drive today. Our...

Jun 20, 2010 - Day 7

Drove from Dallas to Shreveport, LA. Quite a nice drive. Beautiful rolling hills and lots of green with the occasional Crepe Myrtle. They are so colorful and pretty. HOT, HOT and HUMID! We were going to stay two nights, but it’s just too hot to do anything. Jean’s nephew, Paul, was going to try to drive up from Lafayette, LA to visit with us, but it’s too far and he has to work. No point in staying another day just to sit in the ac in the coach so tomorrow we’ll leave for Vicksburg, MS.
