Sam Houston Jones State Park, March 18, 2012 Today we drove the Creole Scenic Wilderness Road, starting at I-10 west of Lake Charles, heading south toward Cameron, swinging down along the Gulf Coast, and back up to Lake Charles. It was a very interesting day. We had a mix of Wildlife Refuges and ‘towns’, rice paddies, cattle fields, oil pumping equipment, lakes, and bayous. We took 2 walks in the Sabine Wildlife area, on one we saw a Willet (bird), several cormorants and ‘black headed terns’ (our name for them….we haven’t checked for...

Mar 17, 2012 - Happy St. Patrick's Day

March 17, 2012 Happy St. Patrick’s Day WOW!! We have unexpected internet!! Today was a travel day, from Austin to Lake Charles, La, and although it was only about 260 miles, it felt much longer. We are tired. The road surface was rough much of the day, there was a lot of traffic, especially crossing Houston, and there was some degree of wind. It made for long periods of tension. We arrived at our campsite in the Sam Houston Jones State Park around 5 pm. It is a very nice park, but the site is not all that flat, and we are once again feeling...

Apr 25, 2011 - Sam Houston Jones State Park, LA

We took another ferry off of Galveston Island. This ferry was busier and we ended up with front row seats. Took about 20 min. to cross then headed north east to Louisiana. Once we crossed into Louisiana you could see the bayous rivers with trees overhanging. The trees have moss dripping from their branches. The State park was great, our site was on one of the ponds, the back of our site looked out on a bayou. You could see birds and who knows what swimming in the water.
