May 20, 2013 - New Orleans Revisited

Today the sun was shining in New Orleans unlike our previous visit. A tour of Bourbon Street was an experience for Lin and my first sober walk there. It smells bad!! Had a great lunch at Redfish Grill. Barbequed oysters to share, barbequed Redfish for me and a seafood fettucine for my Lady. Then it was off to Pat O'Brien's so Lin could have her first and second Hurricane. The Lady holds her rum well!! Found some street musicians who were good enough for a tip. The only problem was that The Hurricane Lady missed the bucket with the...

The Gypsy Whaylands

May 13, 2013 - New Orleans

We made it to New Orleans. The weather is just great. We went into New Orleans yesterday and saw all kind of police. Little did we know about the shooting at the parade that injured 19 people including 2 children. Today though has been better. No shooting. We took a carriage ride and the man pointed out lots of places for us. We saw some buildings on our way in that are still destroyed from Katrina. Parking today was a little bit better today than yesterday. We sat outside and ate while overlooking the Mississippi River and watched a...

May 12, 2013 - New Orleans, LA

We spent a week and a half at the New Orleans East Kampground in Slidell, Louisiana just about 30 miles away from New Orleans. It is a nice enough campground but lets just say it is not as “glamorous” as our winter home at Anchors Aweigh. The fact that it rained 6 days out of the 11 days we were there may have had something to do with that. Between the water front site, huge puddles and the biting bugs that the camp host called “noseeems” we pretty much had to stay indoors except when we had to walk Lucy. The 5 days that it didn’t rain the...

May 11, 2013 - Bayous, Beads and Bourbon Street

Departed the great city of Memphis, with a promise to get back there for a longer stay next time. Just too much fun to be had! A promise we plan to keep. A long drive through Mississippi on US 55, both boring and bumpy over miles of road under construction or roadway that certainly needs it. Broke up the 8 hour trip to New Orleans with an overnight stop in the capitol city of Jackson at the Roosevelt State Park. A very nice, full service facility which gave us just enough time to recharge. Interesting trip through Louisiana over miles and...

Apr 21, 2013 - 2 nights in New Orleans again

Once we got of the cruise ship, we went to our hotel and dropped off our car and luggage. Once we signed into our hotel, we walked down to Decatur st. to do some shopping and have some supper, then we walked up bourbon st. before it got dark so that the kids weren't surrounded by drunken people :) The second day we went on a bayou tour where we saw all kinds of wildlife and had a great time learning about the bayou and a part of Louisiana :)...

Apr 15, 2013 - Visit to New Orleans

We were a gang of 6 from Nova Scotia this year at Charlie & Melanie's - meeting in New Orleans to enjoy the French Quarter Jazz. Initially we flocked for the music and oh my friends it was greater than great. Jean and I tramped from venue to venue, thrilled by the joy of it all. Every kind of jazz was there.

Voyage a Terre

Apr 12, 2013 - New Orleans,LA

We left the Hyatt hotel at 10 am this morning and reached New Orleans by 5 pm though we didn't make it to our hotel until about 5:20pm due to rush hour. Once at the hotel we settled in and cleaned out our car, ordered a taxi (which we felt was well worth the extra cost considering how crazy the traffic was from the French Quarter Festival also going on). Once we made it down to the French Quarter, we headed to the French Market and some other shops before heading to Margaritaville for supper. We decided to share a plate of the Volcano...

Apr 8, 2013 - likin the Big Easy

Monday, April 08, 2013 We pulled out last Thursday and drove thru Mobile. The Carnival cruise ship that had broken down in the gulf and put folks thru several miserable days last month was in Mobile being repaired. Don’t know if it made national news but on Wednesday there was a large blast of wind that whistled thru many places of the gulf. Luckily the wind didn’t hit us hard but it broke the Carnival Triumph loose from its mooring and it was blown across the bay and smashed into another ship. There was footage that we saw on the local...

Apr 7, 2013 - Day 3 & 4

Day 3 Arrived in New Orleans just after midday and checked into our delightful B&B The O'Malley House just off Canal St. Took the trolley down to the French Quarter, entertained on the way by an old man who got on and began telling jokes to all and sundry. Very funny and set the tone for our visit! We braved the cold (54F) and intermittent rain, walking down to Jackson Square and through the mainly empty French Quarter and eventually gave up and took a cab home, walking over to a very popular "local" Italian restaurant Venezia for...

Apr 4, 2013 - Day 2 of Nola

Good morning, We had a wonderful evening in the French Quarter. We took a taxi to Bourbon Street and started walking...we came across a loud, live music, place and decided to go inside. There was a "enthusiastic" female singer on the stage...that had the whole place rockin including us. We ordered 2 Heinekins and got 3!!! What a bonus!!!! You know how Moesie and I like our beer!!! Anyway, it was so loud we couldn't even really talk to each other and we sung our little hearts out. The songs were all ones that were oldies from the f60's,...

Mar 7, 2013 - New Orleans, LA

3/7/13, Thursday Today is our anniversary. One year since we were engaged and 5 months since we were married. We decided to head for New Orleans so we could have a nice dinner to celebrate. On the way, we stopped at Houmas House, a grand old southern plantation mansion that was everything we expected. The Houmas Indians sold their land to the original white owners in 1774. Since then it changed hands a number of times. During the Civil War, the owner declared himself a subject of the English crown and therefore neutral and immune so the...
