May 7, 2010 - Broussard, LA

Another sunny day for sightseeing. We left about 10 o'clock and drove south on US 90 to LA 329 to Avery Island. Avery Island is owned by the McIlhenny family - the tabasco company. THE TABASCO PLANT All the tabasco in the world is made in the factory on Avery Island. There may be other hot sauce, but McIlhenny makes the only tabasco. Each year pepper seeds are planted in the greenhouses. When the seeds have sprouted into little pepper plants and all danger of frost is over, the little plants are planted. When the peppers form, they are...

West Trip 2010

May 6, 2010 - Broussard, LA

A beautiful, sunny day...which grew warmer as the day progressed. ZOO OF ARCADIANA The zoo is located a short distance south of the campground. When we arrived at the parking lot there were 15 school buses parked along the perimeter of the lot. We saw a few of the children and adults in the zoo, but they were mostly ahead of us, so we weren't in any huge crowds. The zoo is small and some of the habitats seem small, but everything is clean and all the animals look healthy and contented. We expected to see only regional animals, but there...

West Trip 2010

May 5, 2010 - Broussard, LA

Another good day for making some miles...clear blue skies. We saw some pretty country today. Coming west we crossed a 17.5 mile bridge built across several rivers and through the swamps between them. The trees in the swamps are still that light spring green. The sky was cloudless. And, the white egrets were everywhere. It all made a pretty picture. We ate lunch in Arvy at the Louisiana welcome center. We had sandwiches, salad, and that yummy crab soup we brought back from the restaurant last night. The flag at the welcome center was at half...

West Trip 2010

Mar 28, 2010 - Broussard, LA

Today is Sunday and we planned on getting up and going to early mass at 7:00, but Rick just wasn't feeling well at all, he had a night of coughing spells. We ended up going to a late mass at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Broussard. After mass we went to Piggly Wiggly and picked up a couple of things; our number one item was "Country Bob's Steak Sauce"; we ran out while we were in Padre and couldn't find it anywhere. I even got on line to see the nearest place, we were supposed to find it in Lake Charles, but we had no luck. We did...

Mar 27, 2010 - Broussard, LA

We left Lake Charles a little later than we planned, we were on the road by 9:45 am. I made us sausage and eggs for breakfast. We had some trouble with our tail and break lights on the SUV. One side would and not the other. We decided to go for it, and travel the 100 miles with them not working the way they were supposed to. We will get them working before taking off for new Orleans. Broussard, LA is just about ten miles south of Lafayette. I chose this area because it was near several places we wanted to see. I also wanted full hookups so...

Dec 12, 2009 - Maxie's Campground in Broussard, LA

Boy were we looking forward to more Lousianan Cajun cookin' on our move closer to Lafayette. We had already made plans to visit some of the local resturantes to enjoy the foods. We were also planning on going down to Avery Island the next day after we arrived to see the famous Tobasco Plantation. I have eaten Tobasco Pepper Sauce for as long as I can remember. I believe that we even had some arond the house when I was a child in Texas. But fate had other planns for us. The evening we had arrived I received a call from Ken our friend who was...

May 28, 2008 - Cajun Fun in Broussard, LA

Our first stop off on our summer trip was Broussard, LA in the heart of Cajun Country. We found a friendly and easily accessable RV park (Maxie's), we got set up just in time for a rain storm to end all rain storms. We went out scouting and found Mel's Diner for brunch. When we came back we met a local couple, Barbara and Tom, who stopped by when they saw our "Gator Bus". They have just ordered a new Allegro Bus and we got to talking. They invited us for an authentic cajun dinner at their lovely home here in Broussard. It was a delightful...

Feb 24, 2008 - Culture Shock

Hi Everyone, Well we made it to Louisiana and a little out of the way campground. I feel a little like I'm in a Pirates of the Carribean movie, such a band o' cutthroughts and ne're'do wells that you'd ever meet....ARRRR! OK, so it's not that bad but it isn't exactly "up town" either. Angel and I went to see a movie tonight, Vantage Point. It was fast moving and full of twists and turns (the bad guys did it...) Oh sorry, shouldn't have spoiled the ending for you all... After that we came back to the RV and brought our laundry to the park...
