Oct 22, 2016 - Heading south to Louisiana

We headed out of Dallas, tons of highway construction on the way out on I-35E towards I-20. Headed east towards I-49 out of Shreveport, Louisana and then south to Baton Rouge where we picked up I-10 headed east. Of course we picked a Saturday to go through Baton Rouge, LSU home game, and there is nothing bigger than a college football Saturday in the south. After making it through Baton Rouge we planned on staying at Lakeside RV just east of Baton Rouge. A really nice park just off of I-10. Unfortunately we didn't realize that the 22nd of...

Feb 13, 2016 - Lounging in Louisiana

We stopped for a couple of days at a campground just outside of Bayton Rouge. The weather has been great,70's and sunny. We spent the afternoon exploring the town of Ponchatoula nearby. It is known as the strawberry capital of the world. We toured a historic train depot and a local museum and then wandered through some of the antique shops (lot's of junk!) A true "Pickers" paradise. Tomorrow we will be in Gulf Shores, Al.

Feb 5, 2016 - Baton Rouge, LA.

We planned on going to New Orleans after Galveston until we realized it was Mardi Gras time. To give you an idea why we wanted to pass on that, we spent 2hrs on I-10 the last 16 miles to our campground into Baton Rouge, 60 miles from New Orleans. One of our fellow RVer's here in the campground came from the south. They saw floats heading to New Orleans and experienced the same traffic nightmare. They also have a Parade here in Baton Rouge known as the Spanish Town Parade. We watched it on TV. We will try to hit New Orleans on our way...

Oct 27, 2015 - Ohio Tidbit. The Final Trip " Atchafalaya Basin"

I have driven across the I-10 swamp bridge near Baton Rouge LA many times over the years. I have seen the swamp across the 18 mile bridge and always wondered what it would be like to get a closer experience with the swamp. The official name of this bridge is the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge and is also known as the Louisiana Airborne Memorial Bridge and like any bridge, it provides a way to go from one point to another. Here this bridge carries you over the Atchafalaya Basin from Baton Rouge to Lafayette LA. depending on your direction of...

Mar 20, 2015 - Gulf Shores, AL to Baton Rouge, AL

As I was walking to the dumpsters to get rid of the trash before we departed this morning, I saw a HUGE dog at one of the sites and decided to stop and meet him/her. It was Obie, a Great Pyrenees. He is nine years old and his owners got him when he was just a little fluff ball and never thought he'd get as big as he did. Sweet as could be, but so much fur!! I asked if I could take a picture of him, and his owners offered to take a picture of me with Obie. I have never seen such a big dog!!! We left Gulf Shores at 12:30pm expecting a 3...

2015 Southwest Trip

Feb 10, 2015 - Baton Rouge

I have been having a small problem today with this travel log, so..hopefully putting the text into a new entry will work. The pictures are in the next entry. Arrived Feb 10th in Baton Rouge. We are staying in a casino parking lot right on the Mississippi River. What a view!! People pay big $$ for this view, and it's free. About 1/2 mile away is the Capitol Park Museum. I walked to it and spent about five hours soaking up Louisiana history, culture, music, and Mardi Gras. The pictures in the other Baton Rouge entry cover the civil war,...

Aug 10, 2014 - Sugar Land, Texas to Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Before enjoying a last night in Sugar Land meal at a Turkish restaurant, we had a drink on their lakeside deck. Our 300 mile journey on Interstate 10 to Baton Rouge went smoothly enough, but we did suffer a couple of hours from funny wet stuff coming out of the sky - the first rain we've had, so far, of any significance. Got into the Best Western (again, we're becoming addicts) at about 4pm and watched the final round of the US PGA Championship (with Julie, some roast chicken and a bottle of wine for company). Who said romance is dead? We...

Jun 20, 2014 - Day 21

So I am going to have to condense the past 3 weeks since I have not been keeping up my log. Day 2 we headed for the Happiest Place on Earth, Disneyland. We pulled up to our favorite RV spot and it said CLOSED! What the heck. Where should we go? We found a place for the night across the street. Not ideal but ok. The next morning we went to the Fullerton Elks lodge and found a spot at one of the nicest areas of Fullerton as it overlooks the city. Great stay. We enjoyed Disneyland and got to meet up with Doug, Joanna, Clara, Abigail and...

2014 Retirement Trip

Jun 20, 2014 - Louisiana

We made it to Baton Rouge, LA, finally! The traffic was crazy. What should have taken 2.5 hours was more like 5 so we decided we were done for the day. Some great sites today. Lots of swamps and I am waiting to see a Gator. Went over the great Mississippi and saw LSU and the capital. We want to see some haunted plantation houses too. They have a beautiful Bass Pro Shop but the picture is better from the freeway and I wasn't fast enough to get that one. We enjoyed VooDoo BBQ for dinner.
