Mar 14, 2019 - Caught in Betty's Web

After a fun visit in the Houston area we spent one night at the Beaumont, Texas Elks Lodge. The camping was adequate but what a welcoming group of people! We toured the town for about an hour and it only enforced our belief that there is something to see in every town in America! After we left Beaumont we had planned to stay at a Harvest Host in Lafayette, LA however, not being from the area it didn’t dawn on me until I had called 4-5 times that it was Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday! Mardi Gras is a month long event in the south, but in Louisiana,...

Apr 11, 2016 - Livingston, TX & on to Abbeville, LA

We enjoyed our short time in Livingston & our visit with friends Rudy & Linda. Yesterday we went to church with them & then they took us for a tour of the Care Center at the Escapee's headquarters. We volunteered at the Care Center in December 2011. A lot has changed since then - the center is now full & planning to add 4 more resident spots in order to accommodate more residents. They have a full kitchen staff & don't rely on volunteers to prepare the meals now. We were here as maintenance volunteers & they don't even have maintenance...

Nov 3, 2014 - Perimeter Trip Continued

If we had left the New Orleans area, on February 8th, as originally planned, that would have been Day 341 of our perimeter trip. I remember bragging that we would get well and be back on the road in no time. Well, we took an almost nine-month break to get ourselves better and we're still working on getting completely well. I've decided that we'll continue the day count, with different dates. Day 341 - November 1, 2014 November 1 and it was Clark's 77th birthday. He got a lot of phone calls and birthday wishes on FaceBook, but we didn't do...

Oct 27, 2014 - We're At Betty's RV Park

Today we moved to Betty’s RV Park in Abbeville. Eddie & Jan were headed back to Waco while Chuck & Coletta were meeting the rest of us in Abbeville. Mike and I were out early wiping down the trucks and getting our RV’s ready to roll. We managed to roll out of Bayou Segnette State Park before 8:30 this morning, and three hours later we were at Betty’s. Now this is a wonderful place to spend some time but the RV’s are crammed in here, very close to one another. In spite of the parking challenge, we were parked and on the way to lunch at...

Mar 26, 2014 - Abbeville, Louisiana

We finally made it out of Texas to our next stop – Betty’s RV Park in Abbeville, Louisiana. There really is a person named Betty and she converted her backyard into an RV park. About 16 sites are crammed together in various ways. People don’t come here for the park – they come here because of Betty and she is unique. She has daily happy hours with hors d’oeuvre with a local flair, arranges jam sessions by local musicians, organizes delicious potluck dinners, and makes great recommendations for local excursions. Betty’s is probably the most...

Nov 16, 2013 - Cajun Charm in Abbeville, LA

We spent six days just south of Lafayette, Louisiana in Abbeville. This little park could easily be overlooked because of its size and location. Betty’s RV Park is an experience similar to staying in a Bed and Breakfast. Betty is an Innkeeper with the gift of hospitality, a sense of fun and a love of people. Bob picked this park for the name, "Betty" and because of the rave reviews. It was definitely not what we expected. First, Betty runs an RV park in her backyard. We could not imagine parking in someone's backyard except for family and...

Nov 11, 2013 - Abbeville, la

Drove to Betty's Rv Park. It is supposed to be the most fun top 25 small rv parks. Small is correct. Didn't think we would fit but we did. Only about 15 spaces. Happy hour every day at 5. Nice people. Had snacks and visited. Tuesday we drove to Avery Island to the tobasco factory. Very interesting. Had lunch there went back to rv park. Went out to dinner. Fun place.

Journey 2013

Oct 13, 2013 - Hot Hot Hot

Avery Island is about 15 miles from Abbeville Louisiana where we are staying at Betty’s RV Park. Avery Island is well known for TABASCO® Pepper Sauce factory. The free guided tour told us about how the pepper sauce is made. In August the peppers reach just the right shade of red and are harvested. They are then mashed and allowed to ferment for Three years in white oak barrels and then bottled. They make over 700,000 bottles a day. This is the only factory in the world for TABASCO. A free tasting in the general store allow for some...

Oct 12, 2013 - At the Heart of Cajun Country

I’m always trying to research where to stop as we travel. One of the main resources I use is other traveler’s blog on this site. I put more credibility in them than I do with people writing reviews on Tripadvisor or Yelp. I feel most of the time these review sites are manipulated by the businesses. Betty RV Park in Abbeville Louisiana had interesting comments that caught my interest. It was a ‘down-home’ kind of place that catered to travelers wanting to experience the Cajun Country. Many travelers blogged about how Betty welcomes each...

Feb 11, 2013 - Goodbye Joe, We gotta go

A gloomy morning after a night of thunder, lightning and rain so we decided to spend the day driving and scratched our plans to visit Houston. The tourist guide did not make Houston sound too great but we decided to head north towards Texas City and around the shipping area so if a star suddenly gleamed over Houston we could deke in. The only gleaming we saw was from gas plants burning off something (?) and mile after mile of industry and container ports - not a pretty place to call home. We did stop in at Kemah as Donna’s research had said...

Oct 28, 2012 - Betty's RV Park - Abbeville, LA 2012

As I mentioned in my previous blog, Betty's RV Park is a destination park for hospitality and camaraderie. If you like people, pot lucks, social hours and keeping busy with music, art and fun this is the place. Besides Champagne's Swamp Tour, we visited Rip Van Winkles Gardens. We went on this outing with our friends Suzanne & Brad (Brad's Blind Repair) and new friends, Karen & Michael. Karen & Michael have been full timing just 7 weeks! The house tour was great! Our docent was very well informed and had a great sense of humor. The gardens...

Nov 17, 2011 - Moved to Betty's RV Park

A cold front moved through during the night and the 85 degree weather we had yesterday was long gone. When we awoke this morning, the sky was overcast, the wind was blowing and the temperatures were forecast to climb only into the low 60’s. Quite a difference! Bob & I drove our trucks to the nearest filling station and fueled up for our journey today. We left the park at 8:55 AM and drove the first 45 minutes in fairly heavy traffic, before it thinned out. I wish I could say that the roads were smooth today but they were pretty rough. It...
