Oct 9, 2006 - Sidetrip to Middlesboro, Kentucky
I spotted on the map the town of Maynardville and Cumberland Gap and the names reminded me of the movie "Thunder Road". Sooo, we decided we would do Robert Mitchum's "white lightning run" only in reverse. We screamed by Maynardville and shot the gap at Cumberland!! Maynardville consists of 2 blocks on Highway 33. We drove into the town of Cumberland. It is a quaint town consisting of 250 inhabitants. There is one restaurant on the corner across the street from the Post Office. This is the corner that Robert Mitchum when careening around the...

Aug 4, 2006 - Winchester, Kentucky pictures
We had a great time at moms and got to visit some friends. Not as many as I would have liked to have seen, but by car it's only a days drive. We are in Corbin, Ky at a beautiful KOA..I'll get some pictures. Poor Chris just spent the afternoon working on the air conditioner. He finally got it working. I'm going to try to get him to take me and the dogs down to the Lake... it's only a 10 minute walk. P.S. Donnie update. He was sitting up in bed and eating this morning. Stupid doctors put something in the wrong place....

On this side of the mountain turn East into the historic town of Cumberland Gap,TN. Time stands still for this small town, with it's 1800 era buildings. It's worth a visit to see. Also there is Daniel Boone State Park.I hiked the three mile wilderness trail to the Gap to take pictures where the early pioneers took this...

Jun 7, 2006 - Pigeon Forge, TN
We stayed 4 days at the River Plantattion RV Resort in Seiverville, which is right next to Pigeon Forge, TN. This whole area (Seiverville, Pigeon Forge and Gaitlinburg)is one huge tourist attraction. Reminds me a lot of Branson, MO. Anyway, the biggest draw is Dollywood (Dolly Parton's park). We went down there to go through the park, and there were SOO many people that we decided it wasn't worth it. Most of the park is rides and kids attractions, so we figured we could pass that. Instead, we went through many of the shops in the area....

Mar 2, 2006 - Cumberland Gap and the "Lost Squadron"
From our campground owners we had learnt there was an interesting museum called the Lost Squadron Museum not far from the Cumberland Gap. We were fascinated to find out the story. In visiting the museum and taking to the guide (who we later discovered was the project leader) we learnt the following story. The P-38 Tomcat Squadron took to the Maine skies on a clear July day, headed for WWII by way of Greenland and on to England. The weather swiftly turned from bad to worse, leaving them no choice but to crash-land on Greenland’s ice-cap....
