Sep 2, 2010 - Almost home

Attached are pictures of about 1/3 of the yard sale – Mamaw’s things. The shelf holds figurines, pitchers, and other items. We had already sold a tea/coffee set. The edge of the porch contains her lovely ceramic eggs (I’m bringing Gail some of the molds), as well as Easter and Christmas ornaments. At http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=lynxtree&target=ALBUM&id=5502832963173819873&authkey=Gv1sRgCNubxeDAv9fc3AE&feat=email you can see Kathy’s new digs. Rather cozy. And, a lovely picture of the dawn fog this morning on the Ohio River....

Aug 31, 2010 - Wings to fly

Vindication! Caroline admitted at about 2pm that it was a really good thing that we started today and that I had persisted. Kathy arrived at 4pm and couldn’t believe how much we had done and how much we had yet to do. So, I guess I need not have worried about “integrity” and should have trusted in most people’s ability to grasp obvious “reality.” There was a really touching moment with Caroline this afternoon. She was unwrapping some of the ceramics and found an angel figurine whose wings had broken off. She asked me what she should do with...

Aug 30, 2010 - Solilquy on Integrity

Well, I’m back on the river. I just left Mardi and the grandkids in Columbus in the last stages of packing. It was really hard to leave because I should be there to help her clean on Wednesday. But . . . I made a commitment to help Caroline get ready for her yard sale. It was part of getting her on board with clearing out the summer kitchen. Sooooooo – I had a three-hour drive to drive my “BMW” (aka b…, moan, and whine) being really irritated and upset that once again I made a commitment when I’m no longer certain that it was a good idea,...

Aug 19, 2010 - Dolls, dolls, dolls

I’ve been busy cataloging the china doll molds because the Adams County Genealogical Society has accepted them. They have found a ceramicist to make the heads, legs, and arms AND have several seamstresses lined up to make the bodies and dress the dolls. I’m not certain what business model they are going to use (licensing, commission), but they are hoping to use the china head dolls for fund raising. Mamaw marked many of the molds with the names of Adams County women who lent her their dolls to make the molds – Margaret Fleming, Nell...

Aug 14, 2010 - Rollin' on the River

Rollin’, rollin’ on the river! Thanks to Sherry, Bill, and “Beetle,” I had a great day out on the river. We (plus another couple from the RV park) left about 1pm and went to the “Rigdon’s Landing” RV Park in Aberdeen to pick up yet another couple. We cruised down the river and took a dip to cool off, then to the “Lively Lady” RV park in Ripley, back up to Maysville with a visit to the Pub (three of us stayed with the boat and took a dunk in the river), back to Rigdon’s Landing for a poker game, and then back to Maysville. It was hot, hot,...

Aug 8, 2010 - Invited to River Ride!

I've been invited to my first river boat trip with a family here at the campground. It's not until next Saturday, but I'm really excited. We'll leave here about noon and cruise the river. Wow, wow, and wow. And yes, I'll take my camera. This morning was hauntingly beautiful, and I was so in the moment that I didn't photograph it. There was heavy fog on the river, and a barge with tugboat slid ghostily through the fog. It was beautiful. Just before I left for West Union, the fog was beginning to burn off, and I could see sunlight on the...

Aug 7, 2010 - Summer kitchen dirty details

Ah, pictures say so much more than words. I uploaded too many pictures for this site’s parameters so just go to http://picasaweb.google.com/lynxtree/SisterhoodOfTheSummerKitchen?feat=email# to see the dirty, oh-so-dirty details. And, I do love doing my email overlooking the river. On Saturday, there are not only the barges, but all of the people out for the weekend in just about every craft imaginable. The weather is delightful – in the low 80’s with a light breeze. I’m happy. It has been another rough day. It started out with the...

Aug 5, 2010 - Happiness is . . .

I couldn’t resist this quick update. I discovered last night that my interior plugs were not working (probably a fuse). Panic! No coffee, no morning computer. Oh no! To top everything, I had left my long extension cord at Mardi’s, and I couldn’t even hook it up to the 120 on the pole. The picture shows my solution. Just take out the small table, the small camp stool, and plug directly into the pole. I’ve already made my coffee, and replaced the coffee pot with the computer – wireless card and all. I must admit that doing my morning news...

Aug 4, 2010 - Hail!

It’s been hail I tay ya, jus hail. [I’ll let you translate the southern Ohio twang.] Now -- only Rick Reichert may understand this quote from the Columbus weatherman: “We had the perfect set-up for severe storms this afternoon. CAPEs were around 3000 and the LIs were down to -12. To be perfectly honest, I've never seen a -12 in Ohio before... in Tornado Alley, sure, it happens all the time... but here? Wow! Cool!” My tale will also confirm that sometimes I am NOT wise. After a few hours helping Kathy pack in Columbus, I left there (she said...

Jul 30, 2010 - More on summer kitchen

Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow creeps in its petty pace . . . I just had a two week “tomorrow.” I’ve attached pictures of the summer kitchen. Because there are trees in all directions, it was hard to get a clear shot of it. Until about the 1920’s, many middle-class homes had a small building near the house for cooking in the summer. Cooking in the separate building kept the house cooler. Also, since most households canned their foods, summer kitchens greatly reduced not only the heat in the house, but the vast “clutter” of large amounts of...

Jul 19, 2010 - Lazy River Intro

I’m on the road again – this time mostly between Columbus Ohio and West Union Ohio. And, this is ongoing story of we three sisters and the summer kitchen behind sister Caroline’s house. I just had a wonderful fresh dinner – corn on the cob, vine-ripened tomatoes, and a vine-ripened small cucumber. Ah, life’s sweet delights. Just a bit of background for the journey so that you have the players straight. I am the eldest of our parents’ six children – four girls and two boys. I was born in 1946, Mary in 1948, Kathy in 1950, James and John in...

Oct 11, 2009 - Busy, Busy, Busy

The time has really flown on this trip, and I've been neglecting my "trog." But, then again, it's been mostly about genealogy this trip, and you may have found it incredibly boring. I have taken some pictures -- more than I can load here -- so here's the link to my Picasa album -- http://picasaweb.google.com/lynxtree/AdCoOct2009# I really love the one entitled "Mornings with Maggie." It really is how I enjoy my first cup of coffee. I may have to get a bench seat for home because the cats really like this arrangement. The tombstones are from...
