Dec 7, 2009 - Our (blog) Journey Begins!

Our first 'foray' into the RV lifestyle began Halloween Day of 2007 when we purchased a 2003 Coachmen Aurora motorhome. We didn't know if we would like Rving and therefore were hesitant to make a huge committment right out of the starting gate. We traveled 13,000+ miles in that coachmen over the next 20 months....it took us to New Mexico, Texas, Missouri, Tennessee, Vermont, New York State, Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. We enjoyed it so much that in the Spring of 2009 we seriously began to consider upgrading to a slightly larger, diesel...

Oct 27, 2009 - Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY

We had a really great time visiting with Harold & Lorena. They gave us the tour of the area around Paintsville and Pikeville, KY. Harold was born in Pikeville and Lorena was from the West Virgina side of the "Appalachian Mts". She is descendant of the Hatfield and the McCoy families that had the "infamous feud" in these Mts. We arrived at the "Kentucky Horse Park" campground about noon and then spent the afternoon touring the Horse Park in the rain. Very beautiful and big. We saw many different breeds of horses, including a Kentucky Derby...

Oct 20, 2009 - Lexington, KY - Kentucky Horse Park

(Ron Writing) The Lexington area of Kentucky is the heart of Bluegrass country and the horse capital of the US, if not the world. The area is surrounded with large horse pastures on rolling hills and miles of white or black wood fences and stonewalls. We spent all day at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. This 1,200-acre facility has beautiful grounds and facilities for thousands of horses and all sorts of events related to horses. The International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian Affiliate, is located on the grounds. The museum...

That night it poured, and the next day it was expected to rain on and off all day, so we decided to visit the Horse Park, where many of the activities were indoors. On this day, they where they were having an Arabian and Half Arabian horse show, and we stayed to watch these magnificent beasts strut their stuff for the judges. We got to meet up close and personal the great champion race horses, Cigar and Funny Cide. Horses that won millions of dollars on the race track. We learned some of their history and Dick took lots of pictures. They...

Cross Country Trip

Sep 22, 2009 - Lexington

The second day was mostly sunny, so we decided to really explore Lexington, stopping in at the visitor’s center first, where we were greeted by a very southern, elderly lady who enthusiastically told us about every single thing there is to do in the area. We decided to take the walking tour of the city, and started at the Mary Todd Lincoln family home, which is the only building ever restored for the wife of a president. Her family was very well off, and she was one of three children from her father’s first marriage. Mr. Todd’s second wife...

Cross Country Trip

Sep 21, 2009 - Lexington, Kentucky

The roads between Cincinnati and Dayton were horrendous and not fun to drive on at all. Again, our tax dollars at work, and the sign we always look for, you know, THE ACT, just about the time we are cursing about the condition of the highways, has become our little joke. Dick just utters one word, “Obama”. Oh, I forgot to tell you that in Michigan they have signs on the highway that say that if you injure or kill a road worker, you get 15 years in jail and a $7,500 fine. OK. Oh what fun driving from the farms and the plains of Ohio, to the...

Lexington, Kentucky – Wednesday, August 26, 2009 Have you ever thought you’d like to get up close enough to really look at one of those thoroughbred race horses that you see running in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness? We got that opportunity Wednesday morning on a tour of thoroughbred horse farms near Lexington, Kentucky. We had reservations with Thoroughbred Heritage Tours of Lexington to take a 3 hour narrated tour of thoroughbred farms in the area, of which there are plenty, somewhere around 450 within a 20 or so mile radius of...

Today was that day! Leaving early from Shepherdsville we arrived at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Lexington to meet our tour guide,...

Home Sweet RV - 2009

Aug 9, 2009 - Elvis is not in the house

Greetings All - the 9th and 10th we were at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. It is one of our favorite camping spots. To get there we had to pass through Elvis territory as well as country music's home in Tennessee. Tennessee is beautiful but Kentucky is in a class by itself. The rolling hills dotted by horse farms are pretty spectacular. We took Conor to Louisville to see the Louisville Slugger Museum and of course how baseball bats are made. We also strolled the horse park. His favorites were the draft horses which are almost all...

Jul 11, 2009 - Almost home

Sorry I haven't posted sooner, but I slept in the beginning and then drove for a bit while Matt caught some ZZZZZs. We just stopped for lunch and Matt took over driving, so I have a chance to post. We're south of Lexington, Kentucky right now about about 150 miles from Knoxville. We're making pretty good time and can't wait to get home. It's been a wonderful vacation. My mother-in-law, Adele, was a fantastic hostess and we owe her lots for helping make this a good vacation. Thanks Adele!! Although it was a great vacation - probably our...

Today and tomorrow we are staying at the Lexington Horse Park. This is probably America's premier horse facility. Over 1000 acres devoted to horses. Jess would be in heaven. The campground is very nice. has a pool and lots of open grass areas and adjoins the Horse Park. We waited until Thur. to tour the horse park. The campground has a free shuttle and we went over about 9:30 am. Got to see some famous retired race horses, including Funny Cide winner of the 2003 Derby. Lots to see, including a museum and lots of barns. While we there we got...

Jun 1, 2009 - Lexington, KY

Two beautiful days of perfect weather made for great driving ocnditions & beautiful scenery. We spent last night (Sun.) in Indiana & then got into Lexington, KY about noonish. We are at the Kentucky Horse Park on the NW side of Lexington. It is a beautiful complex mostly centered around horses, but offers more than that. The campground (rv park) has 260 sites with water & electric. There are dump stations but there are no sewer hookups at the sites. The campground is next to the main facility with all its buildings, riding/show rings, etc....
