May 30, 2013 - Horse Country

Today was a tour of Kentucky horse country. I now know that horse racing does not fit my financial condition. We visited Keeneland Race track, two farms and a retirement farm. The barns are nicer than our trailer, home and all known friends homes combined. We saw the grave of Seattle Slew as well as the farm where he was born. We saw horses working out at Keeneland and also a $700,000.00 outrider horse. My bride, who has a fear of horses, fed several at the retirement farm. You will note the progression of her courage in the pics.

The Gypsy Whaylands

May 21, 2013 - Lexington Ky

May 14, 2013 - Lexington, KY

Another breezy, balmy and sunny day. We drove into Lexington to see the sights. We drove through the University of Kentucky campus and Medical Center which is in town. The downtown is not large and like many cities we have visited, there are plenty of shop vacancies. That said, there is a major effort for revitalization. The town was founded in the 1790’s and has a lovely historic district of brick homes. The Rupp Basketball Convention Center is right off Triangle Square which has a lovely wall falls. The Visitor Center has designed a nice...

Off to Lexington (horse Capital of the World)rather than visiting Louisville which did not seem as interesting. Weather is in the 60’s and beautiful. Arrived at our thoroughbred tour pickup, Embassy Suites, in time for a bite of lunch. There were 6 of us for a tour with John of Thoroughbred Heritage Tours. He was very informative and fun for 3 hours. The name Lexington was an affront (“FU”) from the soldiers to the British in Lexington in MA during the Civil War. Lots of battles with the Shawnee Indians over the pike routes to the town...

Nov 1, 2012 - Kickin' Back in Kentucky with Bourbon

I’m really behind, again, on my journal, so I’ll try to get you caught it. It’s been a crazy summer! On Wednesday morning, August 8th, we left Ohio, and I woke up with a horrible head cold. I was miserable, and as the day wore on, I wore out. We were finally going to stay and visit the Kentucky Horse Park outside Lexington, KY. We’ve driven by the park at least once a year for 26 years and have never stopped…this would be the year. But because I was feeling so bad I wasn’t sure how enjoyable the visit would be. The campground was really...

Freebirds

Oct 4, 2012 - Squirrels and Horses

We headed south to Lexington, which was only about 75 miles away, to the Kentucky Horse Park campground where we had stayed on our trip south from Lake George. We didn’t have time to do any touring when we were there then so wanted to come back and look around. The campground is really nice with very spacious sites and huge expanses of the famous Kentucky blue grass fields around us. Suzie had a great time being able to run free without any fear of traffic. Around the sites there are enough squirrels to take over the world which made...

Larry got up early and went for a bike ride on the Legacy Trail. This was a project he helped to design from Arizona. Nice to have a project when you are familiar with the territory over 1800 miles away. The Legacy Trail is a 12 mile walking, biking, interpretive trail and public art venue. The trail begins on the east end of downtown Lexington and runs to the Kentucky Horse Park. The trails are off-street and fully paved to accommodate any type of non-motorized vehicle. You might find the trail pictures boring. They are for Larry and the...

Aug 18, 2012 - Kentucky Horse Park

Lexington is the 'Horse Capital of the World". The Horse Park is a working horse farm. The facility is a 1200-acre park dedicated to "man's relationship with the horse." It is a beautiful farm property that has different stations accessible on paved walking trails shaded by huge trees. Horse paddocks and historic barns sit on the hilltops. The $16pp entrance fee was well worth it as it also includes a horse drawn carriage ride thru part of the park and the International Museum of the Horse. Events and tours are scheduled at various times...

Aug 18, 2012 - Lexington, Kentucky

We rode through the rest of Ohio, staying beside the Ohio River, on Hwy 7. A lot more of the same Industry ran along side the river. It was a long day, and a long ride, at slower speeds throughout the countryside. We were close to our destination, when we came upon an accident at a small bridge. We were turned around by the local police and had to make our way back along a detour route. That added on a few extra Kms, but it all turned out alright. We crossed the Ohio River and into Maysville, Kentucky. Another hour on the road put us into...

Aug 16, 2012 - Lexington, KY - Kentucky Horse Park Campground

Our trip from Huntington, WV to Lexington, KY was 144 uneventful miles and we even managed to get past the low branches on the first six miles without losing our radio antenna. We are staying at the Kentucky Horse Park Campground which is a state park and is a very nice park with large sites, 50 amps, water, and WiFi. They do have four dump stations on the way out. We have clear shot to the satellite and very good Verizon coverage - life is good!! Tuesday we spent working around the Mothership and getting the laundry done. That only took...

We spent last night in a Walmart parking lot in Washington Court House, Ohio. Walmarts are good for just a nights stop. We have done this a few times and have never been alone or had any problems. We got to Lexington and set up in the campgrounds at The Kentucky Horse Park. As most of our friends know, we lived in Lexington a few years in the 1990's. We loved it here - Grandkids arrival made us homesick to go back to Arizona. The Horse Park was fairly new when we were here and sadly we never did visit it. We will do that...
