Jun 30, 2012 - Hidden River Cave & American Cave Museum

On this terrificly hot day, I decided to visit a different cave in the area. The next town north of me is Horse Cave and it had its claim to fame as the most polluted town in the US! The river in the cave could break down and handle the residential waste but 2 businesses came and disposed their waste into the river anyway. Before too long, the river stunk of sour milk from the cheese industry and the water was also unsafe from the chrome industry that added their hazardous waste. the cave closed in 1943 and remained closed for 50 years! It...

We completed our journey up the Natchez Trace today, that is 444 miles of relaxing drive on two lane road with very little traffic. The last section of the road on the north end is Tennessee. We did see several wild turkey today along the road plus many red, white, and yellow flowers in bloom. We were surprised that there was not much for other wildlife along the road, but we did finally see two deer in a field. Then one single deer all by itself. Must be the other deer didn't like him. Stopped for lunch at the home of the ferry...

Aug 11, 2011 - TIME TO REST

We wanted to stay at a KOA near horse cave,KY because the Mammoth Cave is a national park and they don't have elect at the camp sites nor hot water for showers. Some national parks have hot showers but you have to pay for the hot showers or you can take a free cold shower. Also we wanted to have elect so I could plug in the lap top so we could check on our email. Norma got to get into the pool and this seemed to clear up the posion ivory that was on her ankles. Maybe the bleach in the water had done the trick for her?? This gave us time to...

Aug 9, 2011 - State Parks And Some Times KOA'S

We like to stay at state parks for most of our camping while on vacaction. Some times we need to be able to take a nice swim or maybe do our laundry. Then we stay at a KOA, this KOA was at Horse CAve , KY. We have stayed at Mammoth Cave National Park years ago and the National Park don't have elect hook-up and we needed to charge up a few things. This way we could still visit the park and still have what we wanted in camping. We did a few Earthcaches in the park and a few outside the park. We did not go in to Mammoth cave this time, we got...

May 1, 2011 - To Horse Cave, KY

You can learn a lot at breakfast. We listen to the locals. Many roads are closed. One man owns a marina. He claims to have collected a dock fee this morning before the dock floats away. The Land Between the Lakes is a great area. The Tennessee and the Cumberland Rivers join the Ohio River north of here. Dams created the Kentucky and Barkley Lakes. The area between the lakes is a National Recreation Area. The lakes are at 370 feet. I am not sure how that is measured. According to the locals, officials will open the floodgates soon adding...

Nov 5, 2009 - Horse Cave

Horse Cave---an interesting name. This area of Kentucky is full of caves and caverns but we have chosen to skip those and just spend two nights here getting back on our schedule. We're in the KOA and it's comfortable but has too many trees to get satellite reception so we are still entertaining ourselves with the internet, computer games, reading and listening to country music---about all we can find on the radio these days. We went out for breakfast and then drove into town to the local IGA grocery store. It's a small town and the food...

May 2, 2009 - Horse Cave, KY

May 2, 2009 Saturday Horse Cave, Kentucky I arrived late afternoon in Horse Cave, Kentucky and pulled into a KOA that was only a hop, skip and a jump from Mammoth Cave National Park. Walking into the office a young man was behind the counter and an older man with a full beard, sleeveless plaid shirt and overalls was standing there talking with him. Yes, I was in hillbilly land. I asked for a spot and was told to just drive around and find the one I wanted, then come back and tell him which one I picked. I asked if they had internet and the...

Sep 25, 2007 - Horse Cave, Kentucky

Tuesday, September 25, 2007 Sunday, all we did was laze around. John & Jack watched football, Lori & I went shopping and did absolutely nothing. Monday, John & Jack went to play golf and Lori and I did some more shopping. It was a good day all around. Then we had dinner on the table and dishes done by 7pm so we (Lori & I) could watch "Dancing with the Stars". Couldn't miss that. That brings us to Tuesday morning, our day of leave-taking. We had all the good intentions of pulling out of Lori & Jack's driveway by 7:30am, but we had a small...
