Nov 23, 2012 - Enjoying good weather
Friday (the black one), November 23, 2012 We have been enjoying our time at Land Between the Lakes. Weather has been very nice with highs of mid 60’s and lows in the 40’s. Took a hike a few days ago exploring the area. I mentioned this a few years ago but as a short recap of the history of this area it was settled in the 1850’s by those hardy pioneers pushing west. Iron ore was discovered around here as well as coal and there is a lot of limestone also. The area boomed in the late 1800’s and then things fell off. The Tennessee River was...

Nov 18, 2012 - Headin out for our 5th winter on the road
And here we go again. The Highland’s have hit the road to wreak havoc on unsuspecting fellow travelers, relatives and southerners in general. We left our paradise on Kane Lake on Tuesday, November 12 with about 1 ½“of snow on the ground and colder than H. But it was still hard to leave. We had a great summer season on the lake. And as in past years we did a lot of hard work. No, retirement is not a picnic nor for the weak of heart. But it is what we choose to do. Our biggest task this summer was the construction of a garage. We took down a...

Aug 5, 2012 - Quiet Day
After all the excitement with the tire yesterday we were ready for a quiet day. We went to church at the Calvert City First Baptist Church. It was a very friendly church. With a very good preacher. He did something that I wish more preachers would do. He preached about how important teachers are in children's lives. After the service he ask all the teachers to come down to the front then the congregation came down and laid hands on them while the preacher prayed for them. After church we found a grocery store which was not a easy task. I...

Aug 4, 2012 - Interesting Day!
We didn't leave Campbellsville yesterday because it was raining and Tammy and Cassidy were coming down and we wanted to see them one last time. So sometime in the night I woke up to thunder and lighting so when we got up it was raining. It did stop before we left so that was good. We pulled out about 9o'clock. Stopped at Camping World in Bowling Green and bought the Good Sam's road assistance and got a good deal. It was on special for 2 years for $99. It is normally $79 a year. Left Bowling Green about 10 o'clock central time. Feeling...

Jun 27, 2012 - Ohio River Scenic Byway
We spent 2 days doing the Ohio River Scenic Byway. The byway is across the river from Ky so we crossed the river at a small city called Paduka. Paduka is about 20 miles from the campground and is very small by our standards but pretty big as things go around here. They have lots of restaurants and fast food places and a tv station. (Remember all the campers looking for a place to eat? plus it is on the interstate) It has lots of waterfront on the Ohio with big walls to prevent flooding-wall levees?? It also has a Paneras so we got to check...

Jun 25, 2012 - Land Between the Lakes
We spent 2 days doing the Ohio River Scenic Byway and 2 days in land between the lakes (lbl) with Fort Donaldson battlefield mixed in. Again it's been really hot so we saved the fort for the only coolish day (high only 86 vs 101). Since we had no wifi I am writing this after the fact and I really don't remember what day we did what. The scenic drive thru the middle of lbl isn’t so scenic, but the side roads are (warning-stay off the gravel roads). The side roads take you over to the lakes and sometimes along the lake. There are lots of boat...

Jun 23, 2012 - Canal Campground Ky
Arrived at Land Between the Lakes (LBL) today. The Cumberlamd and Tennesee rivers have been damned up to form two lakes. The Land Between the Lakes is the land between these two lakes. Interestingly named Lake Barkley and Lake Kentucky. The TVA created the lakes (we think for power and navigation) but they turned over the running to the Corp of Engineers and the National Forrest Service. Anyway the campground is a COE (corp of engineers) campground and very nice. We aren't waterfront in this one but we can see the water across the road...

Sep 13, 2011 - Canal Campground on Kentucky Lake
Before we retired to bed last night, another camper backed up beside us. In fact, they were probably close enough to reach out and touch them. We were quite puzzled by their choice since it was a large parking lot. It appeared that its occupants went straight to bed. It was still warm, and we had most of our windows open. At 4 AM, the neighbors started their generator!!! We were completely baffled! We retracted our slide, Roland started our diesel truck (always a special sound), and we moved to the other side of the parking lot. They were...

Jul 21, 2010 - Overnight in Kentucky
We departed today before 7:00 AM and traveled 360 miles to Lake Berkley, KY. We are camped at a US Corps of Engineers campground which cost $12.00 per night utilizing our Golden Age Passport. I shoot for an average campground cost of under $35.00 per night so this park is a positive contributor to maintaining my budget. If you are into boating, this is an excellent park with thousands of acres of water to enjoy and you can dock you boat adjacent to your campsite if you score one of the many waterfront sites. The park has 50 amp electrical...

Nov 11, 2009 - A little history in Kentucky
Tuesday, Nov. 10 Happy Birthday Marine Corps. Hmmmmm, why do I remember that? Overcast but nice morning. Packed up and hit the road, left the CG completely empty. Drove to the ferry boarding location on the Ohio River. I had Barb drive on so I could watch underneath the backend of the trailer to make sure it didn’t scrape. Sure enough, whoops, we be too long behind the wheels and she started to scrape. Whoa Barb! Back her off, on to Plan B. We need to find a bridge. Darn, I wanted to get ferried across the Ohio just like in days of old with...
