Jan 3, 2013 - Amazon, Inc.

Started working for Amazon on November 5, 2012. First day was meet and greet, then a tour of the facility and safety meeting. Next three days worked five hours from 5:30pm to 10:30pm. Second week we started our schedule - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, still five hours getting us used to being on our feet for an extended period of time. Put us on the floor right away in what they call Crisplant, which is where we filled the customers' orders putting the items in boxes, taped them up and set them on the conveyor belt. Working there...

Aug 3, 2012 - had to see our little girl one more time.

Tammy and Cassidy was coming down to see Kyle so we decided to stay and see them one last time. They have been to Florida so they are both real tan. Cassidy is growing up so fast. Kyle wanted a haircut so Cassidy did it for him. She started it and Tammy finished it. Went to Colton's streak house for dinner. This is the second day we ate there. I think Donald has his fill of streak now.

Aug 1, 2012 - good pulled pork

We had a great day with Kyle today. He came over and we went to Kroger's and to the goodwill. Guess that is what you call shopping. Came back to the trailer and Kyle put a pork loin in the crock pot with Diet Pepsi, barbecue sauce and season salt. Then we went over to the duplex where he stays and had supper with some of his friends. Really nice kids. They call the guy that owns the duplex they stay in Papa Bear I guess because he is a old man of 23 years old. It is so good to see Kyle doing God's work and being so happy doing it. They...

Jul 31, 2012 - On the road again.

Well after a week of Meade County Fair we are on the road again. We will travel 70 miles today to visit our grandson, Kyle, at collage. We got everything packed up and pullled out about 10:30 and arrived in Campbellsville around 12:30. There is a new road that has just opened from Brandenburg to Elizabethtown and it made the trip a little faster. Kyle came out to the camp ground and he took us on a tour of the town and the school then we went for Mexican food. Really good meal and the thing that made it even better is Tuesday is the day...

Don't wake me up

Jun 16, 2012 - Green River Lake

I was told that this was the weekend of the Kentucky Blueberry Festival in Edmunton, KY which is an hour east of Mammoth Cave, so I went to check it out. I was very disappointed because there was only one vendor selling anything related to blueberries and they ran out of blueberries about 10 minutes before I got there! They had cupcakes with blueberry flavoring in the icing, and thumbprint cookies with blueberry jam in the print. I did buy some blueberry jelly, though. I tried a blueberry relish that they put on hot dogs, but it tasted like...

Apr 23, 2012 - Bourbon Anyone?

This will have to be a quick update as we are not plugged into electricity and I don't have a lot of charge left on my computer. But wanted to let you know we are headed home and should be there in the next day or two. We have had so much fun traveling with the Eyths and exploring and tasting new things. We loved Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry. Got to see a great show and took in the sights of the downtown action one Friday night. Also took a Redneck Tour of Nashville and laughed so hard my stomach hurt. Lots of fun. After Nashville, we...

Dec 21, 2011 - Campbellsville, KY

We are here for the next 2+ months to work as elves for Amazon! The park is a big gravel parking lot across the main road from the Amazon Distribution Center. The park was built to provide campsites for the seasonal workampers. With the crazy hours we work, it was certainly nice to be so close to work. We didn’t do any sight-seeing as our work schedule really wore us out. Here’s a typical day: Go to work at 4:30pm, get home from work at 4:00am; in bed around 5:30am (you’re wired, so you don’t go to bed right away); sleep until 12:30pm. Get...

Nov 23, 2011 - Amazon.com, The Real Story

2011-11-23 Amazon.com, The Real Story Amazon.com is an amazing place. The huge warehouse contains miles of conveyor systems, thousands of racking and shelving units and everything is controlled by a computer system that ties all 12 Amazon facilities to the main office in Seattle, WA and updates the inventory in real-time. The people that work here full-time year around are as nice as they can be. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. The managers and supervisors treat everyone with respect and are always giving positive feedback to the...

Nov 17, 2011 - 2011-11-17 Glendale, KY

2011-11-17 Glendale, KY 42740 If you’re ever in this neck of the woods, you’ll want to make a stop in this little village just west of I-65 and about 10 miles south of Elizabethtown. It is one of the quaintest little burgs you’ll find anywhere and be sure to arrive hungry. It is the home of the Whistle Stop Restaurant, who’s down home southern cooking features fried green tomatoes, fried corn bread, collard greens, country ham, fried chicken and well you get the idea. It’s all good! Did I mention they have homemade desserts? We had an early...

Oct 31, 2011 - Halloween

In the morning, I set up direct deposit to our Bank of America account for our Amazon salaries which is administered by ADP; however, we were told that the first paycheck would be an actual paycheck which can be cashed at Walmart (less a service fee). When we arrived at work this evening, we found candy, apples, and oranges available in the lunch rooms for employees for Halloween. That was nice! I decided that, although I will not be blogging during our time at Amazon, I will include entries about any side trips from Campbellsville we might...

Oct 30, 2011 - Amazon and Sunday

Dan visited the motorcoach of workampers Dave and Chris who had also attended last April's Workamper Rendezvous in Heber Springs, AR. Dave was able to give Dan a copy of a drawing on electrical outlets from the RV Maintenance class that they both had attended. As I was working our 5-hour shift at Amazon, I realized I had not worked on a Sunday in over 30 years, except for a special event or to catch up on work. This is going to take some getting used to...

Oct 29, 2011 - Saturday Night in Campbellsville

After walking around Green River State Park on this beautiful Fall day, we had dinner with five other workamping couples (including Phil and Rose Shafer - see the October 21st entry) at the Golden Wok in Campbellsville. We then drove to Hodgenville, KY to see a country music show at the Lincoln Jamboree which has been in business since 1954. The Jamboree Gang and guest singers play and perform a variety of music - from country classics to today's top 40, and from foot-stomping rock and roll to favorite hymns.
