Apr 25, 2020 - almost home

On the news we've seen videos of wild animals in national parks and cities enjoying the land as they never can when all of us are around. A panda pair who had lived together in a zoo for ten years, finally got going on the baby making when there weren't humans staring at them. Perfectly understandable. Today's drive was a bit longer than we would like, but we got through it so much quicker including drives through downtown Atlanta and Nashville, since the traffic was so light. The campground here has many seasonal campers, which makes it...

Oct 10, 2015 - Land Between The Lakes

After putting in a couple of long driving days we decided to spend a couple of nights in a region of Western Kentucky known as "The Land Between The Lakes". It is called this because it is an area of land that is bordered on the west by a lake formed by the Tennessee Dam on the Tennessee River and bordered on the East by a reservoir formed by the Barkley Dam on the Barkley River. Our day trip took us east of the Barkley reservoir through farmland and lake country then west to the "The Land Between The Lakes" on a highway called the...

Oct 9, 2015 - Decatur to Calvert City Kentucky

We left Decatur at 8:30 and continued south on state highway 51. We found a wonderful place to stop at Vandalia, the first state capital of Illinois 1836-1839 and Abe Lincoln had been at the state capital several times as a Senator before he was elected President of the USA. It was a great photo op and chance to stretch our legs, while admiring the architecture of the area. Shortly after leaving Vandalia, we made another stop at a quaint country store, called The Rusty Nail. After rejoining Interstate 57, we were to pleased to have passed...

Paducah/Kentucky Lake KOA, 4793 US Hwy 62, Calvert City, KY 42029, 270-395-5841 We headed out around 9:00am and had another short drive of about 220 miles. We stopped in Metropolis, IL for lunch then arrived at the campground around 2:00 pm. The campground is nice but hilly. The sites are gravel with lots of trees. Cable is included and most of the sites are pull throughs, making it a great one night stay place. We settled in to watch the Georgia/Florida game.

Jun 23, 2014 - Calvert City, KY

There is not much to report. It is a cross-country travel day. We cross the Mississippi River into Chester, IL. We head south on the Great River Road. We get a couple of glimpses of the river. It is a nice drive. The Day Lilies are also in Illinois. We head west on Route 146 through Anna toward Interstate 24. We head south on Route 45 to Metropolis. We park at the town center. It is a busy place. We have to wait our turn to take pictures of Superman! The last leg of our drive puts us on Interstate 24. We cross the Ohio River into Kentucky....

Jul 9, 2010 - Land Between the Lakes

The first stop of the day is our usual visit to the Ford Dealership in Paducah, KY. The battery light had been coming on intermittently and, it turns out, it needs a new alternator. While we wait, we are taken to the local mall where we shop and have lunch. Then back to the dealership to wait (they had to send someone fifty miles to pick up the part). We are back on the road at 4:30pm and head for the Land Between the Lakes. This area is formed between two lakes, Lake Barclay which is part of the Cumberland River, and Kentucky Lake which is...

Feb 17, 2006 - Land between the Lakes

Land between the Lakes in Kentucky is a National Recreation Area which is located in Western Kentucky and Tennessee and covers 170,000 acres. Within the Land Between the Lakes Area there is an Elk & Bison Prairie a habitat restoration project, which demonstrates how the region once looked during the time of Daniel Boone. We spent two days exploring the area then we had a major snow storm which we sat out for two days.
