Oct 28, 2013 - Bright Reds!

This morning I needed to run a couple of errands and I decided to include some sight-seeing as well. Two places I like to drive by while in Wichita are my grandma Train's house on S Topeka and my grandpa Byron's house on S Osage. (Aunt Kathy made me change "Vickers" to "Train".) I was quite surprised to see some bright red trees on St. Francis Street near my grandma Train's house. Beautiful!

Oct 27, 2013 - Follow The Yellow Brick Road

We made it to Wichita, KS, today at about 4 p.m. We had pretty good travel weather and we made good time. We drove about 320 miles to here from our last stop in Mountain Grove, MO. We settled in at K & R RV and Mobile Home dump. We had second thoughts about staying here since most of the residents appear to be full-time in the park. It's a bit run down, but the price was right... and don't step in the dog poop! We'll pray for the best, but probably will not camp here again in the future. See the picture above.

Oct 12, 2013 - Wichita, KS

Enjoyed old town Wichita, ate lunch at Mexican Playa Azure. Spent time at the Wichita Art Museum, viewing historical native American art and Kaindl chandelier and under glass floor pieces. The first piece acquired was an oil of a corn stalk. Some interesting pieces outside as well. Stopped off at the "Where the waters meet" park, modern suspension bridge and a large cut bronze of the watcher. One last stop at a bakery down town for scones and biscotti. experimenting with colors and fonts today.. cannot see the final product until I go out...

Jun 24, 2013 - June 24, 2013 – Wichita, Kansas

June 24, 2013 – Wichita, Kansas Today I went to Wichita to meet Sue and her mother, Alice. We had a nice lunch at BJ’s Brewhouse. Alice is visiting from Phoenix. We had a good time visiting and catching up with each other. After lunch, I ran by Dillon’s to get a couple of things and fill up with gas. On the way home I stopped by McConnell Air Force base. I just took some pictures from the road, but I want to go back and go through their museum. I stopped and read all the historical markers on the way home. I did go on one wild goose chase....

Jun 14, 2013 - June 14, 2013 – Wichita, Kansas

June 14, 2013 – Wichita, Kansas We left this morning at a little after 8. We took 77 north into Kansas and then scooted over to 81 to take into Wichita rather than taking the interstate. The 1st place we visited was the Mid-America All Indian Center. It is small, but it is very nicely done. I particularly like it because they didn’t try to put everything they owned on display at the same time. (Many museums have so much on display that you really can’t see anything.) They said that only about 20% was on display at any one time. Today, they...

Jun 3, 2013 - Wichita, KS

03Jun2013 - We are staying at the Air Capital RV Park in Wichita, KS for the next week. We arrived around 12:45 and had to wait for the office to reopen at 1PM for check-in. Now we are parked, setup and have had lunch. Now there is time for a "nap"! 04Jun2013 - Today we spent the day running errands and picking up some supplies from the Sam's Club. 05Jun2013 - There was an awful thunderstorm early this morning with lightening and very hard rain that woke us up at 3AM. KC was really scared too and crawled under the covers with us! We finally...

Dec 26, 2012 - A Bit More Like It

Not surprisingly, it was still darn cold on Wednesday morning when we chose to get rolling. With no hot shower to slow us down (we had no interest in walking over to the shower house), we microwaved water to wash up, ate a little cereal, unhooked the electricity and we were outta Interstate RV Park. One of the jobs we had postponed the night before was our first fuel addition at the nearby Flying J, so that was our first stop. While I ran a good 55 gallons of gas into the Allegro Bay, we used the opportunity to again hook up the Saturn. Let...

Oct 20, 2012 - October 19-20, 2012 – Emporia and Wichita, Kansas

October 19-20, 2012 – Emporia and Wichita, Kansas October 19 – Today the wind continued to blow really hard so I just stayed put. I didn’t do much of anything – took a nap, did some crossword puzzle and played some solitaire on the computer. October 20 – Today I went to Wichita to play tourist. On the way I stopped at the Matfield Green plaza on the Kansas Turnpike to see the Knute Rockne memorial. He was killed in an airplane crash near there. They have also established a memorial for the people who were killed in a flash flood on the...

We took a drive to Hutchinson and went to the salt mine first, they schedule tours every 40 minutes and we had just missed a departure so had to find lunch. Afterwards, we toured the Kansas Cosmosphere that has some great exhibits about the German rocket program in WWII and...

Sep 25, 2012 - Cessna aircraft factory

Today we took a long drive, through Kansas farmland, to the Cessna plant in Independence. The tour was customized, just us, and took a total of 1 1/2 hour+. We saw 172's, 182's, and 206's in production as well as the mustang jet. We were taken through the assembly plant and also to the final staging area after paint where interiors, engines, avionics, etc. are then installed. We saw quite a few planes on the ramp awaiting delivery and many in production, it looks as if Cessna will survive at this point. The manufacturing plant also had a...

Sep 24, 2012 - Dead Head East 1

This is day 2 of our trip. Last night was spent in Tucumcari, NM. It was obvious that the super highway by-passed a once-thriving town. Here are just 2 pix of some old Rte. 66 locations there. Tonight we are in Wichita, KS. We are not on Rte. 66 so no pix of here. Tomorrow we will make our way onto Chicago – we expect it will take 2 more days of travel. There will be more pix and details once we have actually started back on Rte. 66. Dead heading east is very tiring. We fought wind, traffic, and construction almost all day.
