Jun 7, 2018 - On The Road to Topeka

We were awake at 5:30 this morning and soon sat together sipping our morning coffee. About the time we finished the coffee a glance at the clock was all the urging we needed to get started. Things went very smoothly for us and we pulled away from our Site before 8:00 which was our planned departure time. We stopped at the parking lot to connect the car to the RV and to chat with our friend Jeff who stopped mowing to say “So Long” and share a hug. It was 8:15 when we left the Mark Twain Cave Complex and were “On the Road again”. The drive...

We will be met by our guide/driver John, and will spend the night at the Lake Duluti Serena Lodge. Did I say how excited I am?

Apr 26, 2018 - Topeka Bound

It sure would have been nice to sleep in this morning but today was a travel day, a LONG travel day. We took some time to share our morning coffee before getting busy and we pulled out of Rolling Retreats at 7:40 AM. I decided to bypass Oklahoma City and avoid the bumper to bumper traffic moving at 60 mph. I have a friend who calls that early morning rush hour traffic the “Demolition Derby”. We turned north on Hwy 81 at El Reno and then turned east on Hwy 51 at Hennessey, Oklahoma. That took us to I-35 well north of Oklahoma City. The...

Aug 27, 2017 - Vignettes along the Trail

Here are some vignettes from along our journey. So many little things to see and reflect upon. Camels in Missouri?? Yep. At a Saturday farmers market sat a man selling camel milk. It is healthy for what ails you. And it makes a good living at $18 a pint! He has four camel cows that produce 2-3 gallons each twice a day. He ships the milk around the country. He was an interesting guy. We are following modern guidebooks, but over a century ago the DAR marked the Trails to remember the brave folk who made the journey. There granite markers...

Jul 21, 2017 - Topeka KS

Wednesday morning we were up early and on the road by just after 9:00 – yep, in the morning – southbound on I-55 to just north of St. Louis where we headed west on I-270 till we slid onto I-70 westbound to our current home outside Columbia, Missouri. We quickly got set up by about 1:30 and after a quick lunch and gassing up the Jeep, we headed south on U.S. 63 to Jefferson City, to tour our 2nd state capitol in as many days https://mostateparks.com/page/55186/missouri-state-capitol. The tour was pretty standard as far as capitol tours go,...

May 9, 2017 - Elk City to Topeka

Marilyn & I were up at 5:00 this morning planning time to share our morning coffee before getting on the road. We soon finished off the coffee and completed our pre-departure chores. We then left Rolling Retreats in Elk City, Oklahoma a few minutes before 8:00 this morning. The only “pucker factor” during the entire trip was going through Oklahoma City, with the traffic. We stopped for fuel before leaving Oklahoma and took enough time to eat a Subway Sandwich. I disconnected the car from the RV and Marilyn followed me the rest of the way to...

Apr 19, 2017 - Salina to Topeka , KS

April 19, 2017 Woke up to a “Kansas breeze” aka winds of 25 mph which was a precursor for our short trip to Topeka. The KOA in Salina was an “A” meaning ultra clean bathrooms that also had real estate in the showers and around the sinks. The shower doors (see picture) had drying racks. I took a picture to show other camp ground owners what campers really appreciate! We didn’t even grt on Hwy 70 when the check engine light went on again. We topped up with DEF to no avail. The closest MB/Sprinter dealer is in Kansas City, MO. We called...

Oct 24, 2016 - Topeka, Monday the 24th

I am in love with this campground Bill found in Topeka! It is spacious, clean, has plenty of quality grass for the dogs, has great WIFI, and even has security gates. All the inner roads and sites are concrete. Finally, no gravel! There is noise from I-70, which is close by, but we have portable fans to block that out. We will be driving again all day tomorrow, and will likely end up in Oakley, or thereabouts. I can’t wait to soak in my tub Wednesday night!
