Jun 13, 2018 - Mushroom rocks and Little Sweden

June 13, 2018 (Wednesday) I’ve been on the road 4 days today and I’ve managed to get lost on 3 of those days!! I hope this is not going to be a trend for this trip. I was headed to Mushroom State Park this morning and I turned at the sign for the park onto a dirt road. Since my gps did not show the state park, I was just following the sign. The sign didn’t say how far it was until I would reach the park. The road I was on keep getting narrower and narrower. I finally turned around when the road became a one lane path. I was going over...

Just Tripping Along

Jun 11, 2018 - Driving day

June 11, 2018 (Monday) Today was a travel day. I drove from Guthrie OK to Salina Kansas. I already knew the road I needed to take when I left to rv park to get on 1-35 however, the gps tried to lead me on a different route. At first I ignored it then I remembered what happened yesterday so decided to follow it. It lead me around in circles. I drove back to the road I was originally going to take and the gps then started showing it was the correct route. It keep trying to make me take me on the Kansas tollway instead of non-tollway roads. I...

Just Tripping Along

Sep 15, 2017 - Sept. 7 Salina, Ks

We spent Sept. 5th and 6th, cleaning up and packing up to break camp after our extended stay in Northern Colorado. This sit was not originally part of the plan and 7 weeks was too long to be more or less camping. But the whole idea was to avoid our condo complex while major renovations are underway to the drainage, water and parking lots. Now over 4 months later it does not appear that they construction has yet begun on the major part of the project. Hurricane Irma seems to be headed for Fl and is currently bumping between a cat 4 and a cat...

Road Trip 2017

Jul 31, 2017 - Moving to the Big Town

We moved to Salina, KS on Monday and will be staying at the Salina KOA for a few days. We needed to replenish the groceries and Sue needed some prescriptions filled. It was also time to catch up on our laundry and KOA's usually have decent laundries. On the way to Salina we stopped at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center at Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area. It's the largest wetland in the interior US and is an important waterfowl stopping point along the Central Flyway. It's managed by the State of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. The...

Apr 18, 2017 - Denver, CO to Salina KS

April 18, 2017 The kids took us to breakfast at Snooze, a very popular ( always a line) breakfast spot with several locations in Denver but also have a few in SoCal (Tustin and Del Coronado)and TX. Their specialty is fancy pancakes but also have many interesting egg dishes. I was also interested in their commitment to the neighborhoods they are located. They invite nonprofit s to tell them about their causes and then use their pancakes to help raise money. We (not I!) shared the blueberry pancake stuffed with lemon butter and vanilla icing....

Mar 30, 2017 - A good day but long long day

After 3 days at Winstar we were ready to get back on the road. We had a fun time and enjoyed our stay. We weren't any big winners. We didn't even break even. We did get 3 free days at the rv park. Also 2 days of free breakfast at the Grand Via buffet. The shuttle would pick us up at the rv park and drop us off at any of the different areas of the casino. We got up this morning and caught the shuttle to the casino for the free breakfast buffet. After we ate we returned to the rv park and started getting things ready to pull out. It was...

Aug 30, 2016 - Electrician's Nightmare

Campground electrical power is notoriously unreliable. There are frequently outages or “brown-outs”. Occasionally, the sites are wired incorrectly with poor ground connections or reversed lines. Knowing this, I had installed a “Power Surge Guard” when I first bought the RV more than a year ago. It detects all sorts of dangerous power situations but only has one protection approach. If it detects any problem, it shuts down the entire RV without warning. For months, it worked wonderfully. On rare occasions, it would shut off the power, wait...

Aug 27, 2016 - Teacher's Pride

What an amazing drive from Westminster, Colorado via Highway 6, The Grand Army of the Republic Highway to Ogallala, Nebraska. We camped at Lake McConaughy, truly, what we consider a real camping environment with a lake view from our campsite, campfires in the morning and evening and lots of trees (more to follow about the trees!) I wanted to use some of the Hatch Chilies we purchased in Westminster so I made a Green Chili Stew, a lot of work but well worth it. We have enough for a few more meals so it made it worth the effort. When we went...

2016 RV Trip

May 2, 2016 - Salina, Kansas

We arrived in Salina on Sunday afternoon with a chilly 50 degrees. On the way to Salina, we passed multiple wind farms, drove through The Flint Hills portion of Kansas which is quite different from eastern Kansas. Here there are rolling hills and outcroppings of rock. We drove past Fort Riley in Manhattan, KS, which is also the home to Kansas State University. On Monday, May 2 we drove through several small towns dating back to the middle 1800s. Ellsworth still has quite a few brick streets. The welcome sign says it is a wickedly friendly...

Sep 17, 2014 - Day 17 Travel Day Wakeeney to Kansas City

We hit the road again to move camp to our third campground. Today we will end in Cottonwood RV Park in Bonner Springs just east of Kansas City, KS. On our drive there we pass Salina and Abilene, KS. Abilene has another Cow Town and the Carousel to visit as well as the President Eisenhower Library. Just to the east is Junction City with it's Memorial to the Buffalo Soldiers and Fort Riley with it's 1st Inf. Museum. My brother was stationed at Ft Riley in 1974 for his "90 Wonder" boot camp. He was Army Corp. of Engineers Reserve as a civil...
