Apr 29, 2014 - Phillipsburg, KS - Visiting Relatives

(Ron Writing) It was pretty cold and nasty again today but at least we aren’t having tornados like some other areas of the country. Last night after I wrote the journal entry we went to visit my aunt who lives here in Phillipsburg and then this morning we stopped by the home of one of my cousins and his wife for a visit. This evening we had dinner with another cousin and her husband at a Mexican restaurant here in town. In all cases we had a very nice time visiting and catching up on each other’s lives. Our family is so scattered we don’t...

Apr 28, 2014 - Phillipsburg, KS - Another Very Windy Day

(Ron Writing) It didn’t seem too windy when we awoke this morning but by the time we were ready to hit the road it was very windy again. According to the radio the winds were blowing 30 to 40 mph with gusts over 50 mph. The wind was out of the northwest so we got very poor gas mileage as we headed north on US-83 for about 80 miles. Then we headed east on US-24 and we got much better mileage. At Stockton, KS we turned north on US-183 and drove about 20 miles to Phillipsburg, KS where we are camped for the night. We’re in the city campground...

Oct 17, 2011 - Phillipsburg, KS (Day 11) - New Hitch Arrived

(Ron Writing) Our new replacement hitch arrived today. It was out on a truck for delivery already Friday but for some unexplained reason the driver never delivered it to us. We got the hitch early this afternoon and I spent most of the rest of the afternoon getting it installed and adjusted. It’s the same make and model as the old one but the manufacturer has made some changes to the design that address problems I’ve had with the hitch. Hopefully this one will last a little longer. We’ve had mostly very nice weather the past few days and...

Oct 12, 2011 - Phillipsburg, KS (Day 6) - Slight Delay

(Ron Writing) We had planned to leave Phillipsburg yesterday morning but we’ve been delayed. When I inspected the hitch equipment just prior to hooking up the trailer I noticed cracks in some of the welds on the hitch head. After some on-line shopping I ordered a new replacement hitch. That was shipped today and is expected to get here early next week. Until then we will just be relaxing in our very nice campground in Phillipsburg. After the rainy weekend, the past couple days have been just about perfect. Both yesterday and today it was in...

Oct 10, 2011 - Phillipsburg, KS (Day 4) - Visiting Relatives

(Ron Writing) Yesterday we attended worship service at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church. It’s a country church about 15 miles from Phillipsburg founded in 1885 by the many Dutch immigrant farmers in the immediate area. My great grandparents and grandparents all attended this church and are buried in the nearby cemetery. My parents both attended the church until they moved to Iowa shortly before I was born. The congregation was much larger when this area was covered with small family farms. Now the farms are all very large and there are...

Oct 8, 2011 - Phillipsburg, KS (Day 2) - Visiting Relatives

(Ron Writing) This part of Kansas has been pretty dry lately and the farmers were hoping for rain. Last night they got rain. We had over one inch here in Phillipsburg and nearby areas had over 5 inches. We had showers much of the morning but most of the heavy rain occurred during the night when we awoke several time to the sound of nearby thunder. This morning we met two of my cousins for breakfast at a restaurant in town and then went over to visit my 93 year old aunt who just recently moved into a care facility. One of those cousins...

Oct 7, 2011 - Phillipsburg, KS - Where My Parents Came From

(Ron Writing) This morning we stopped by the Hastings Museum to see the Kool-Aid exhibits. Edwin Perkins invented Kool Aid right here in Hastings back in 1927. Unfortunately the museum is renovating the Kool Aid exhibits so that gallery of the museum is closed until August 2012. We’ll have to see that some other time. It was still very windy but not quite as bad as the past couple days so we decided to head on down the road. The rig handles just fine in the wind but when we drive directly into the wind, as we were today, it sure kills the...

May 9, 2008 - Phillipsburg, KS - An Evening with Relatives

(Ron Writing) This morning it was cool, crisp and sunny. We decided to tour the AAA Gem-rated Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, KS. This museum is named after a local resident who collected many of the fossils displayed, and was the museum’s curator for some 25 years. It’s a small museum that is primarily devoted to the history of animal life in this area from millions of years ago when it was under a vast sea, through the dinosaur period and more modern times. George Sternberg’s most notable find was the “fish within a fish”....
