Dec 12, 2017 - Iowa, Missouri And A Wee Bit Of Kansas

Since today’s itinerary called for driving all the way to Kansas City, we did get up at the crack of dawn on Tuesday. I was able to enjoy the breakfast buffet, we made a quick Starbuck’s stop for Jill and we were rolling down Highway 151 toward Dubuque by 7:30. In a genuine good news - bad news situation, this was a very uneventful day. It was definitely cold, but the sky was bright, the roads were clear, and the traffic was tolerable. The only wildlife we saw all day were the occasional roadside hawk along with a few deer and turkeys in...

Oct 4, 2017 - October 4, 2017 – Kansas City, Missouri and Overland Park, Kansas

October 4, 2017 – Kansas City, Missouri and Overland Park, Kansas I met Ken and Betty at the storage unit this morning. They picked up the things which I was donating to the auction and the embroidery thread chest. I just barely got there on time because I ran through a fair amount of fog and rain on the way up. After Ken and Betty went home, I went to Von Maur as today is the markdown day. I didn’t see a thing which I had to have so I didn’t spend any money. Hooray! I had lunch and then went to the presentation about next year’s insurance...

Dec 12, 2016 - Get The Flock Outta Here

On Monday morning we were up, breakfasted and showered by 6:45. We went through our “Leaving Home” checklist and completed our final chores (heat down, answer machine off, take laptop, phones, i-pad etc, etc, etc) and we were out the door (with no planned return for almost 4 months) by 7:15. After a brief Starbucks stop for my ace navigator, we were on our way, just as it was getting light. Happily the snow had ended early Sunday afternoon, so the roads were in pretty nice shape. We drove in an overcast winter wonderland through Madison...

Gone, Gone, Gone

Dec 15, 2015 - Hell Hath No Fury

We survived our first night on the road at the Hawthorne Suites quite nicely. We were up by 5:30 and despite the less than secure design, nobody got mugged, I was able to go get a good raisin bran breakfast while Jill showered, then I showered while Jill dried her hair. It was only at this point that the world as we knew it essentially came to an end. Someone had left Oshkosh with plenty of hairspray packed for Mexico (somewhere deep in the bowels of the Rav-4), but with none (as in zero, zip, nada) in her suitcase for the 5 day trip to get...

Dec 14, 2015 - You Have To Be Crazy

On Monday the 14th we were ready for our new adventure. Both of us were up and moving by 5:00 and we almost made our hoped for 7:00 departure - what’s 15 minutes in a 10+ hour driving day, right? In preparing the Rav-4 for our trip, Jill had suggested that we change the wiper blades (at least hers anyway). For a change I had the good sense to listen to this suggestion. Given that it was still raining cats and dogs occasionally all through the state of Wisconsin, Jill again proved to be an excellent planner. Our first stop Monday was in...

Nov 5, 2014 - Museum Day in KC

11-5-14 Museum day in Kansas City No driving day today! Well, not much driving anyway. No Starbucks either, got internet in the Campground that works. We got showers (a great luxury when on the road) then headed out to meet Joann for breakfast at a place called “First Watch.” Food and conversation were good. It was good meeting Joann for the first time, Julie and Kate met her last summer on their famous “Post Graduation Road Trip.” After breakfast it was off to the RV so Joann could see how nomads live. We spent time on the laptop showing...

Nov 4, 2014 - Sioux City, IA to Overland Park, KS

11-4-14 Sioux City, IA to Overland Park, KS Had to scrape ice off the windshield of the Toyota before going to coffee. It was nice to see the computer worked (after wondering if it might be the computer and not the “free WiFi”). Got back to the RV by 8AM, got a light breakfast, fueled up and was on the road to Kansas City by 9:30AM. Nice clear day that got a little more cloudy as the day wore on. We took a couple stops along the way, one stop was at the world’s best (I think) rest area. It is located near Rock Port, MO. It is bran new,...

May 4, 2013 - Paige turns 4!

We love going to Overland Park to see daughter Terri and family - Mark, Claire and Paige. Daddy was away from home during this visit so we helped celebrate so they could celebrate again when he came home. You know the theory: the more partying, the more loot! And you guessed it, no birthday party is complete without balloons. Although this was the week before Paige's birth date of April 22, the weather couldn't have been better - warm and sunny! Just like we like it. All four children had played outside all afternoon, then finished with...

Apr 10, 2010 - Overland Park, KS

Since we had to forego our stop in KS on the way to MN we are now going to make a quick stop there on the way to GA. It’s always a treat to see our friends Chelly and Gary and to stop into one of our favorite Mexican places-Jose Peppers. After playing a few games we settled in for the night at Chelly’s place.

Jul 2, 2007 - End of Day 3 -- Overland Park, KS

We arrived on the south west side of Kansas City, in Kansas around 4pm and were greeted by the family. They live in a beautiful house in a really nice part of the city. They have two puppies and a large backyard and the dogs had a great time. We got showers before dinner and then were treated in a really great meal of spinach lasagna, salad and garlic bread. We felt human again! Dave just started a job at Garmin who manufactures Eric's GPS (along with millions of others) and received a T-shirt which will quickly become his favorite. We...
