Sep 4, 2018 - Last to Leave

We were up before daylight this morning. As soon as the daylight became sufficient to see, we were outdoors getting ready to go. We kept an eye on our friends Mike & Marian who were also preparing to leave. We thought we were ready except for connecting the car to the RV, when Mike & Marian announced that they were ready to go. We walked down to exchange hugs with these good friends and to wish safe travels for one another. As we watched our friends pull away from their Site, the thought that we are the last of our group to leave went...

Jul 7, 2018 - A record distance day

Will have to keep this one simple! We are totally out of energy!! diverted from our route following hwy 96 east thru Kansas to go north to visit friends in Oakley, Kansas. We had a choice of making two short days, but knowing there was going to be a strong wind from the south, thought it would be clever to take advantage of it and go north, let the wind work for us! We did that and in fact got all the way to Oakley, all 85 miles of it! The part heading north was earlier in the morning and before the strongest wind of the day picked up. We...

May 20, 2018 - Oakley KS

After the tour we dashed home and finished packing up and just before noon we headed westbound on I-70 to the booming metropolis of Oakley in northwest Kansas. It was a just over 5 hour drive through a little rain and finally some wind till we pulled into the High Plains RV Resort...and describing this as a “Resort” is a stretch...at just about 5:00. The highlight of the drive? Michele drove the house for just under 2 hours and even parked us in our spot at the campground...all without a scream or gasp from me and no trading of paint with...

Sep 29, 2016 - Oakley, KS - High Plains RV Resort

Our trip from North Platte, NE to Oakley, KS took us through 173 miles of the Nebraska and Kansas farmlands. That was actually 20 miles farther than expected as we found US 83 completely closed about 40 miles north of our destination and we commenced a 20 mile detour to get to the campground! We saw field after field of dried, dead corn on the stalk, ears of corn included. We figure this must be used by the many feed lots we saw as we could see them cutting the corn at the ground and it being ground up and fed into semi-trailers. We could...

Sep 1, 2016 - From The Mountains to the Plains

We had a good day of travel today. We were up with plenty of time to share our usual morning coffee together. Around 7:30 we started getting the “last-minute” items done so that we could depart our summer home at Mountaindale near Colorado Springs. Eddie & Jan were the first of our friends to show up at our door. It was a pleasure to have spent the summer with these good friends. Bob & Janet walked up to wish us safe travels also, and then Jesse & Ginger arrived to share hugs. It helps to resolve the sorrow at our parting with our friends...

Sep 21, 2015 - Crabcakes in Kansas???

We spent a quiet weekend in North Platte, sleeping a lot. We were both tired, and in fact, the kitties seemed really tired too. It is hard to tell since they sleep most of the day anyway. We both felt kind of puny so it was definitely nice to have a couple of days to just rest and of course, watch football on Sunday. I did manage to get the laundry and grocery shopping done but not much else. -- This morning, we headed south on Highway 83. Last year, we traveled Highway 83 all the way down to Texas and we decided to repeat it again this...

Sep 8, 2015 - On The Road Again

We were up at a regular time this morning. Knowing that we would not be able to travel all the way home today, we were in no hurry to get started. Chris walked up to exchange hugs and wish us safe travels. Then Jan brought sandwiches so we could have a bite to eat for breakfast. Eddie joined Jan and us, and a few minutes later, Bryan & Sherry walked up. While we were visiting, Gia walked over also, followed shortly by Jesse & Ginger. Ken & Jean had already said so long because they were leaving on a road trip to Estes park yesterday. So,...

not much WiFi... I'll wait for pictures until later tonight Sometimes it makes a difference. We're here for two nights. Evidently Cap'n Jacks Pub has great food and it's right here. More later. Oh if you want to find out more about this country try searching for PBS Heritage house project or something like that..... "To enjoy such a trip ... a man must be able to endure heat like a Salamander, mud and water like a muskrat, dust like a toad, and labor like a jackass. He must learn to eat with his unwashed fingers, drink out of the same...

Jan 28, 2015 - Oakley, KS

We really had to scramble to get out of Denver this morning, on the heels of the next winter storm. As you all know, we continually have things breaking on us, sometimes even before the trip begins. Bill took the rig Monday morning to a truck wash up on I-70. As he was driving back, the ceiling over the dash started falling down, aggravated by the super heavy driver and passenger window shades. And while he was busy Monday afternoon and part of Tuesday shoring it up, the weather forecast kept changing, calling for the next Denver snow...

High Plains RV Park is probably the least attractive campground we’ve stayed in so far – but we were happy to see it. Even though we drove a mere 256 miles today, we made a stop at Ft. Riley to tour the Army Cavalry Museum. Again, Mark and I made this stop several years ago on a drive out to California and we knew Dave and Jean would enjoy it. Besides, we had a fairly short distance to go – no need to rush. Parking the two rigs near the museum was a bit of a challenge, but we managed. We spent about an hour, then climbed back into our...

Sep 3, 2014 - On The Road Again

We were up early, finished our coffee, and started getting the final chores done for getting back on the road. We were still finishing up when Jesse & Ginger walked up, followed shortly by Eddie & Jan. We visited with these good friends as we prepared to leave, then exchanged hugs and wishes for safe travel. We sure miss these good folks already, but the good part is knowing that we’ll be seeing them before too long. Jesse & Ginger will arrive in the Rio Grande Valley ahead of us and we expect to see Eddie & Jan when they visit a bit...
