Jul 29, 2016 - Liberal, KS

Fri, 29 Jul: Still rolling along... If it's Friday it must be another road day. We have some distance to cover and we're chipping away at it day by day. All in all, we're making excellent progress and may treat ourselves to a "down day". A major thunderstorm moved thru the Lakeside RV park around dinnertime last evening, but did little more than blow and spit a bit. More rain overnite and again at wakeup time but again, nothing to worry about. Actually, the rain cleared most of yesterday's dust from the coach and car. We arose around seven...

2016 Travels

Apr 14, 2016 - Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!

Wed We got an early start for the 270 miles from Santa Rosa to Liberal, KS. Except for a few sections, US 54 is still good. We thought that we had seen large cattle feed lot operations before. HAH! Today we saw some lots that must have had well into the 100s of thousands. There are huge farming operations to raise the grass, hay and grain for all those critters. We arrived at the Mid-America Air Museum in Liberal around 3:30, parked the rig in their huge lot and went to “Dorothy’s House”. Now, I KNOW that you all understand which Dorothy I...

Sep 22, 2015 - We're in Kansas, Toto

We have spent all day in Kansas. And, it seems to us that it has changed quite a bit. We left Oakley fairly early. I have been trying to get my son's birthday present mailed. I could not find the post office in North Platte. It had moved and no one seemed to know exactly where it was any more. Then in Oakley, we waited until 8:00 am for the post office to open only to find out that it actually opens at 8:30. Finally, in Scott City, Kansas, I found an open post office and got the darn thing sent off. I probably should have just held onto it...

Pretty Damn Nice!

May 5, 2014 - Grasslands

There was a terrible accident on the highway today. We were stopped for half an hour . I saw the ambulance speed away and when I finally passed the scene I saw a smashed up car in the median of the four lane highway. Most of the four hour ( actual drive time) trip today was through national grasslands. Fortunately, the wind calmed down quite a bit since yesterday but it was still enough to constantly blow the tumbleweed across the road. Liberal Kansas is so named for it's history of hospitality and generosity. In the 1880's water was scarce...

Nov 2, 2013 - Kansas City, MO to Liberal, KS

November 2 Being with the Carlsons is always so much fun! Gerry and Susan were home from work early so we had some time to catch up before their daughter, Sarah and family, and the Wempes arrived for dinner. Susan had made boeuf bourguignon, steamed potatoes and peas. Sarah brought a very tasty salad and Vanessa made an apple cake. The Lander girls took care of Charlotte Wempe and I’m not sure who had the most fun. Very well read group so there was lots of interesting conversation. Sarah is an anesthesiologist so we all had a lively...

Oct 4, 2013 - Seward Co. Fairgrounds, Liberal

Wednesday: 10/2 We left the4 Aces RV Campground about noon. Since we only had 100 miles to go – why leave early. It was an uneventful trip and we arrived at the Seward County Fairgrounds in Liberal, KS, with no problems. They have electric only for $10 and full hook-up for $30. Since we had dumped the tanks and filled with water at 4 Aces we opted for electric only. Talked to some maintenance people and they opened the shower house and turned on the the hot water for us. Spent the rest of the day napping and resting. Thursday: 10/3 Happy...

Summer 2013 Travels

Sep 29, 2012 - Kanopolis to Liberal

Trip from Kanapolis to Liberal, KS F. O. G.!!! It was foggy when we got up but Weatherbug said it would burn off by 9. We waited until 10 to head for the dump station and it looked pretty good. But after we dumped and headed up the hill we realized that it was even foggier at the higher elevations. We had about ¼ mile viability for quite a while and then it finally lifted, Our trip was pretty good. We were able to get gas in Great Bend. Then about 3 or 4 miles down the road, I realized our steps were still out. I flipped the switch but they...

Summer 2012 Travels

Jun 5, 2012 - Four States in One Day

TUESDAY: Elk Lodge #1947 Liberal, KS Monday in Tucumcari was a day of rest. I didn't get out of my nightgown until after 1 pm when it was time to put on my swim suit. The water was wonderful so I swam a bit and then did some water aerobics for my knee. In the evening the threatened thunderstorms came thru. There was quite a bit of wind but nothing like the night before. Then the rain started and included about 10 minutes of pea sized hail. Not enough to damage anything but enough to cool it off nicely. The rain kept up until almost time to...

Summer 2012 Travels

May 29, 2012 - Liberal, KS - On The Road Again

We left Oklahoma around 8:30 this morning and traveled 276 miles to Liberal, Kansas. Neither Roger nor I have ever been to Kansas so this is a new state for us. The drive was fairly uneventful and the scenery was rolling hills and mostly farms. I thought it was really nice when the road came up on a rise and one could see for miles. It made me think of how it was when the wagon trains went through here. It must have been an awesome sight for those travelers. Lily was much better riding this trip than in the past. We decided to put her in...

Are We There Yet?

Apr 20, 2012 - Dorothy's House, Liberal, Kansas

On one of her trips to California, our daughter, Sandi, stopped to visit Dorothy's House in Liberal, Kansas and thought it was a hoot. We decided since we were close, we should head over and see the Yellow Brick Road. When we arrived we found out that we were behind three groups of school children that would be taking the tour so we had to wait about an hour to get one ourselves. We could have taken a tour with the last set of school children but we decided the 15 minutes of wait time might be worth it so we could hear what was being said....

Our 2012 Travels

Oct 19, 2011 - Liberal, KS - Dorothy's House & The Land of Oz

(Ron Writing) This morning we did some shopping at Sam’s and then headed south on US-83 to Liberal, KS. The author of The Wizard of Oz was never specific about where in Kansas that Dorothy was from but the city of Liberal decided to “adopt” her. Today we toured Dorothy’s house and the adjacent museum with all the characters and a few key scenes depicting the story. It’s a guided tour that is usually led by a 12 year old girl playing the part of Dorothy but since 12 year old girls are in school at this time of the year, our tour was led by...

Mar 18, 2011 - Western Star RV Ranch, Liberal, Kansas

Well the tailwind we had yesterday, died to dead calm last night. Then this morning while in the midst of unhooking from shore power and water, the winds kicked up again, but from the northeast. So today we faced it and burned a little extra precious fuel. This afternoon, we arrived in Liberal, Kansas and scouted out options for parking our home. The fairgrounds was $30/night for full hookups, but it was all dust and dirt. The Elks Lodge had 15amp power only and water near the building for $10/night in their parking lot. We have opted for a...
