Sep 26, 2014 - September 26, 2014 – Americus, Dwight, Junction City and Fort Riley, Kansas

September 26, 2014 – Americus, Dwight, Junction City and Fort Riley, Kansas I had made plans to visit with Sharon Sharpe in Junction City this morning so I got an early start. On the way there, I saw a wonderful old barn which is slowly collapsing. I also passed through Dwight which has several old buildings whose facades looked like they were tin, but the buildings themselves are built out of the limestone which is so plentiful in this area. Before I went to Sharon’s house, I climbed up the hill to see the atomic cannon and get a great...

Sep 19, 2014 - What's that noise?

Boom…Boom…Boom. Was that an explosion? Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat…Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat. That sounds like gunfire! Yes, indeed. During our first night at the Milford Lake COE campground near Junction City, Kansas, we did hear explosions followed by gunfire throughout the night. The campground is a few miles down the road and adjacent to the Fort Riley military base. The sounds were coming from troops practicing night maneuvers and drills. I joked with Art that, at times, I wanted to sit up in bed and yell “incoming.” Abilene is just a few miles...

Aug 31, 2014 - Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad and Tornado Warnings ! OH MY !

We drove to Abilene (just 20 miles west of Junction City) to ride the ATSF Steam Locomotive, the only working steam train in Kansas. The Abilene and Smokey Valley Railroad is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation who's "purpose is to preserve history by entertaining visitors. To this extent the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad was formed in 1993. The excursion train has been operating for 19 years providing train rides not only for the general public but also for special groups, school field trips, dinner trains, birthday parties, weddings...

Aug 26, 2014 - Toto, We are back in Kansas

We left Nebraska last Friday and got into Kansas but it's taken me this long to decompress. Why? A couple reasons. We camped up at Milford Lake, a state park a few miles from the New Horizons factory and had no wifi so I couldn't upload any pictures. Also it was HOT AND HUMID and I don't do well in HOT AND HUMID WEATHER ! It hovered around 100 degrees all weekend long. The humidity made it feel worse, although once it's past 100 degrees I don't really care......I felt like a wet sponge. Even Jessie had no energy and when Jessie has no...

May 30, 2013 - New Horizons Factory

May 30, 2013 Arrived at the New Horizons Factory in Junction City, KS. We are early for our June 10th appointment but can not travel with bad brakes. Found out that Dexter disk brakes have a problem with the pads coming off. Had one new rotor installed and new pads all around on the trailer (6 wheels). Had the problem with the frame flexing and the basement doors coming open looked at. They installed additional bracing, remounted the basement door frames with additional brackets and replaced the patch over the crack. The inside cellphone...

Sep 19, 2012 - Waiting on New Parts

We are still here at "Camp Horizons" waiting for some new parts to come in. The techs, however, did install our new water pump today and what a difference that made on our water pressure! That new pump works great! Our friends Bruce and Mary Sue left this morning all fixed up and ready to go with their repair completed. We ate dinner together last night and then danced until bedtime. It was a fun evening. We look forward to seeing them again in the Rio Grande Valley later this year. We have some adorable donkey neighbors just up the road...

Sep 16, 2012 - Fun Despite the Wait

Today, Sunday, we went to visit the Buffalo Soldier Memorial Park here in Junction City, KS, with Bruce and Mary Sue. This is a very nice memorial honoring the African-American 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments whose role in our country's history is not always recognized or gratefully appreciated as they should be. After time at the memorial park we went to lunch at a Chinese restaurant and enjoyed some very tasty Chinese cuisine. It had been a long time since I indulged in any sweet and sour chicken, yum, what a decadent treat. Tonight we...

Sep 15, 2012 - New Horizons RV

We arrived here (the New Horizons Factory in Junction City, KS) at noon on Wednesday, September 11th. When we got here we found the New Horizons factory “hopping” and realized there was no way they were going to get to us that day. A few couples picking up their new rigs and a few other couples getting modifications/repairs were ahead of us on the work list. However, the New Horizons people were very friendly and helped to settle us into our “spot” we called “home” for the next couple of days (complete with a 50-amp hook-up and water). One...

Sep 8, 2012 - Milford Lake, KS

September 3 We drove from Longmont, CO to Russell, KS and the temperature reached 99 degrees (F). The farms in east Colorado and northwest Kansas show how the drought has affected this area. We saw dried up cornfields and sunflowers everywhere. September 4-5 We arrived at Farnum Creek Campground at Milford Lake, near Junction City, KS. Our site is pretty and on the shore of the lake, but it’s in the full sun and really warm. Thank goodness for air conditioning. It was very warm the first day and a big storm came through at night. The next...

August 23, 2012 We are still in Junction City, Kansas at the factory. We all call this "Camp New Horizons". We have met some wonderful folks here all getting service done on their RV. We, found what we thought was a problem, but it turned out to be, an easy fix. Then it rained, well have a place we want the factory to look at and see if it will be a problem in the future. This RV is under warranty for two years, so we have plenty of time. Since it is our home, we want to take care of it the best we can. It has rained here in Junction City...

Aug 2, 2012 - Kansas

From Limon, Colorado, we continued down the road and consulted our “EXIT NOW” Good Sam book and saw that there was a “Bernie’s RV Sales and Service” in the small town of Stratton about 20 miles down the road on I-70. We tracked it down. Bernie worked in a dilapidated building and his car and makeshift office were decorated with Ron Paul for President signs and Confederate flags. Still, Bernie did well. He discovered that our AC unit had never been properly tightened down. Four bolts hold it to the roof – two were almost completely off and...
