Sep 25, 2010 - Independence, KS (pics of roof cracks)

We arrived in Independence. Things are up in the air as to whether or not we can stay here - stay tuned. Don't know if I mentioned it or not, but while we were at Yellowstone, washing the rig, Jack was up on the roof and noticed the crack in the roof which we had fixed last April is back and worse than it was before! He called Winnebago to have it documented. Guess we have to make another trip there again! Here's some pics - it's a lateral crack (across the width of the motorhome), which Jack was instructed to put some caulking on as a temp...

Jun 23, 2010 - Little House on the Prairie and Twisters?

June 23rd Went to the Little House on the Prairie near Independence, Kansas. The kids loved pretending the wolves were circling the house. They also loved the little school house that was moved to the site. I asked the docent about offspring of the Ingalls clan and I was sad to learn that there are no living relatives of Laura Ingalls Wilder. None of her sisters had any children and Laura only had Rose. The docent had harsh words for Rose. I guess Laura’s estate was supposed to have been donated to libraries and to create programs for...

May 16, 2009 - Little House on the Prarie

Laura Ingalls Wilder homesteaded in South Dakota at the same time my grandfather did. But before they went to SD, the Ingalls family homesteaded in Kansas. Her book, Little House on the Prairie, tells about this adventure. They would have stayed there but there was some problem with their claim. Anyway, as we left South Haven, KS, this morning, I noticed the Historic Site on the map. We were going right past it and I told Ron if the road wasn’t bad – I would like to stop. So we did. Not a lot there as you can see from the pictures. But,...

Oct 5, 2008 - Independence, KS (Elk Lake SP)

I found this campground in a National Geographic State Parks guide. It is very nice and is on a nice lake which is good for fishing. They guys tried today but had no luck. It's hard to know exactly what to do to catch fish at each place that we try. It is fun trying, though! We experienced our first terrific mid-west rain storm with thunder and everything. It was great to watch the torrents of rain come crashing down around our camper(!) The kids just loved it, of course, especially because, at 70 degrees, it almost feels like a warm...

May 24, 2007 - Independence , Kansas

We our on are way to see the house that Laura Ingall Wilder wrote about during her child hood days in Kansas . The house is the one that was in the book "the Little House on The Praire " . One room house in the middle of Kansas , about twenty miles away from Independence . We got to run down the hill where they run in the start of the show on T.V. THE LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRE , The hill with the flower in bloom on the hill side . There was also a small post office and school and outhouse. The Ingalls had to leave that area because of the...
