Sep 19, 2017 - Day 21 PM - Hutchinson KS

Enjoyed the Eisenhower museum so much that we had to scrap our plan to drive to Dodge City and instead only went as far as Hutchinson. Found an RV park that is under construction but passable enough for the night. Gorgeous sunset with all the wind. Picture does not do it justice. Need to work on the RV camera in the morning and then decide where to go next. Mesa Verde National Park is tempting, but adds 250 miles to the trip. Almost forgot to mention - after pulling off the highway, we let a cop cruiser pass by and turn left behind him to...

Jul 4, 2017 - Hutchinson

July 4, 2017, We decided to go to the Salt Mine Museum today so around 9:30 we headed that way. No good place was closed for the3rd & 4th. Got a few pictures of the building with the rock and the piece of wood. What next? How about brunch? We headed to IHOP and had a nice long leisurely breakfast then hit the Wal-Mart next door. Still early so we headed to Yoder, Amish country, bad choice, the town was closed. Back to Hutchinson and look for the antique stores. Strike three, the town was closed. Time to head home, I fixed potato salad and...

Jul 3, 2017 - Cosmosphere

July 3, 2017, and 70 degrees the next morning at 6:30.Off to explore today. We are headed to the cosmosphere, a premier space museum and a Smithsonian affiliate. In 1962 Patti Carey, a Hutchinson civic leader had a dream to have a planetarium at the Kansas State Fairgrouns. That dream has grown to become the Cosmosphere where you are follow the race for space in a very comprehensive way with the US on ne side of the hall and Russia on the opposite side. Just as you walk in the door you are under an SR-71 Blackbird that actually flew. Every...

Jul 2, 2017 - Hutchinson

We set up camp at the Lighthouse Landing RV Park in S. Hutchinson. It is a fairly new park but sights are full hookups with 30/50 amps, and long enough to accommodate any size rig plus your tow. It is located close to the freeway but little noise. Just outside the park is a Conoco station with a nice restaurant and a sporting goods store. Cost is $34 per night and it is a Passport America Park so cut that in half. We went to dinner at the restaurant. I ordered Chicken Fried Steak and the steak covered the oblong shaped dish, guess I have...

Apr 20, 2016 - Strataca!

After visiting Greensburg, we continued east on Hwy 54 then NE on 61 to Hutchinson. There is a space exhibit here which is supposed to be very nice. Having seen a few of these we bypassed that but wanted to visit Strataca. We arrived in the late afternoon and parked in their RV lot for the night. Strataca is a museum which highlights and details the 650’ deep salt mine and the secure records storage underground. We signed up for all tours. We were escorted down via the dark, 650’ elevator to the floor of the mine/museum. The mine and mined...

Kansas 2014

Jun 22, 2014 - June 22, 2014 – Emporia and Hutchinson, Kansas

June 22, 2014 – Emporia and Hutchinson, Kansas This morning I had breakfast with Sue at IHOP. Afterwards, I decided that it was too nice a day to sit around so I headed out to Hutchinson. “Hutch” is home to the world’s largest grain elevator. It is over ½ mile long and holds over 17 million bushels of grain. It more than dwarfs railroad cars which are parked next to it. Hutch is the home of 2 of the “8 Wonders of Kansas”. They are the Kansas Underground Salt Museum and the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. I did not visit the salt...

Sep 19, 2013 - Day Trip: Hutchinson, KS

We head to Halstead on the motorcycle for breakfast. Outside the restaurant, we chat with a local who also owns a Harley Davidson Sportster. We take the half hour ride to Hutchinson. Did I mention that we are on Route 50 that is a truck route and it is still windy? By the time we reach Hutchinson, I am a bit tense. The ride home is much more enjoyable. Maybe it is less windy but I doubt it. Maybe I am getting used to the experience. Definitely, the glass of wine at lunch helped! However, I am getting ahead of myself. In Hutchinson, we go...

Oct 7, 2012 - HDT Rally

We are at the Heavy Duty Truck Rally in Hutchinson, KS. This is where the HDT owners show off their trucks and trailers. There are a number of informative seminars related to the trucks and their systems. Having one of the newest rigs at the rally we expected to get some praise. What a surprise. They picked the rig apart finding even more things wrong then we had. The truck and bed were a real disappointment for the attendees as well as for us. We knew the hitch was not mounted correctly and did not work correctly. A new hitch was on...

Sep 13, 2011 - Replacement Parts

We had originally planned to leave AP, TX for Kansas on March 1, 2011 for my scheduled knee replacement surgery on March 9 in Hutchinson, KS. We received a packet of information from the surgeon that said I needed a pre-surgery physical and lab work done by my Primary Care Doctor prior to my surgery. So, we needed to head to Tribune instead of Hutchinson, which meant we needed to leave TX earlier than planned to be able to accomplish everything that was needed. We drove to Abilene and spent the night and drove on to Ulysses, KS for the...

Apr 7, 2011 - First Of Many Stops In Kansas

What a very interesting day. I left Oklahoma City at a decent hour but late enough to miss most of the city traffic. Once I got on the road to Kansas, I couldn't help but be impressed by all of the neat and beautiful ranches and farms that lined the road. Magnolias, redbud, apple, plum,- all manor of flowering trees are in bloom . It's as if someone came and splashed cherry, pink, purple, and white paint around. I arrived in Hutchinson, Kansas in time to take the 1pm tour of the Kansas Underground Salt Mine. After a safety video, I put on my...
