May 6, 2013 - From Canyons to flat land
This is Monday evening and we are in a motel room in Garden City, Kansas. We entered Colorado on Saturday and explored the Black Canyons and stayed overnight in Gunnison, CO. This canyon is just a river which has burrowed it's way through the Rockies as you watch it from 9000 feet up. A depth of sight you just cannot put in a picture. Sunday morning we worshipped with the folks at Gunnison Community church and the topic was just what we needed. "Do not worry" according to Luke 22. Well we do not worry a whole lot at this time. We decided...

Sep 9, 2012 - Great Bend to Garden City, Kansas
Glorious day...morning started out in upper fifty's then topped out around 88 degrees. No clouds and no rain! First stop of the day was Pawnee Rock, which for the travelers on the Santa Fe Trail, was a welcoming landmark. Not only was it the highest point on the horizon, but it marked the "half way" point of their journey. Today, the rock outcropping is surrounded by a park. You can get out, take a walk around the top (which is considerably lower today due to quarrying), and get a SENSE of what those people saw from that advantage point....

Oct 18, 2011 - Garden City, KS - Prairie Museum of Art & History
(Ron Writing) This morning we left Phillipsburg, KS and headed west on US-36 to Norton, KS, then SW on KS-383, US-83, and US-24 to Colby, KS. We had strong north-NW winds all the way so the gas mileage suffered. From Colby, KS we continued SE a short distance on I-70 and then south on US-83 to Garden City, KS. On this leg of the trip we had a strong tail wind so we made up for the earlier poor mileage. Along the way we stopped for a couple hours in Colby to tour the Prairie Museum of Art and History. The indoor exhibits feature the “Kuska...

Sep 16, 2011 - Unexpected Girls Weekend
I always keep in touch with friends from our church "home" ward in Scott City, KS. I received a news bulletin that Sherri Dew and Wendy Nelson would be visiting in our area and were presenting a fireside on Saturday evening, May 14. There are certain speakers I will travel to the ends of the earth to hear, and Sherri Dew is certainly one of those. I contacted my daughters to see if we could all meet in Garden City for the fireside and have a girls weekend at the same time. Sometimes, all the stars align and things just work out. Such was...

Aug 22, 2011 - Day 40: A Great Start to the Day
Dave and Laurie, Tim and girlfriend Stacia came by the motorhome this morning. After a quick tour of our living quarters we all walked about four blocks to a local restaurant, "Bon Tons" for breakfast. Breakfast was delicious...at least I can say my food was. The waitress said the pancake syrup was homemade! We visited as long as possible; then it was time for us to check out of the rv park. It was good bye to our good friends with promises to see one another soon! Glen had scoped out cheap diesel prices on our route. Pueblo had the...

Aug 27, 2010 - Nebraska, Colorado & Kansas
We are up early Thursday as we have a long way to travel. We are delayed for 20 minutes while our anal innkeeper tries to find just the right spot to take a photo of us and the girls. She finally makes us squat down for the photo – it took us a minute to get Rita back on her feet!! It is cool in the mornings here but it heats us in the afternoon. It is very different here than home since it does not cool off at night in Rockport. About 30 minutes after we start out we leave the beautiful Black Hills and are in the rolling plains where they...

Sep 6, 2009 - Garden City KS
Another early start for me and a mad dash for the heat, 570 miles on HWY 25 through Denver to Pueblo, east to Garden City KS before camping among the cattle feed yards. I choose to take this route, following the Santa Fe Trail along the Arkansas River based on the illustration on the maps in my Atlas, designated scenic routes in KS and OK. Maybe I missed something or perhaps I should just have expected that this was scenic for Kansas and Oklahoma. Wheat fields, irrigated fields, cattle yards, smell, flat ranch country and very small towns,...

Jun 27, 2009 - Colorado Springs to Garden City, Kan.
Hey boys, we’re not in Colorado anymore. The scenery has definitely flattened since entering Kansas today. Even the Geocache we got today on the border was named No Mountain in Sight. We left Colorado Springs this morning after a nice visit with Uncle Mike and cousin Krystalle. We headed back to Highway 50 east, a straight shot through many little speed trap towns. In many cases, it changes suddenly from 65 to 35 mph, with the 35 mph sign hiding in the bushes. We’ve read a lot about how speed limits are strictly enforced by troopers...

Sep 15, 2007 - Day Twelve - North Platte, NE to Garden City, KS
We left Alliance with a full tank of unleaded and headed for Kansas. The scenery was majestic, especially with the knowledge of how much we depend on the land and residents of this area of the country for a good deal of our necessities. We reached the gas station on our map with a 1/4 tank, to find that they sell gas only to customers with locally issues Agriculture Credit Cards. Uh-oh. We made mental plans for hitchhiking or walking several miles ro a farmhouse to plead for gas. Thankfully, we made it another 30 miles in the fierce...

Apr 13, 2007 - A beautiful spring day in western Kansas...
This morning we awoke to a beautiful (but discouraging) sight. Lots of big heavy snow. Big flakes and the wind is blowing. The cedar trees are already drooping from the weight. Wes has shoveled the walk a couple of times and it is covered again. It is not too cold - about 38 degrees, but our bodies have gotten used to the warmer weather, so we feel cold. Our dog, Sophie, is glad we are home, so she can come inside where it's warm. We have spent the day unloading the fifth wheel with things we need back in the house for a couple of months....
