Jun 19, 2011 - Fort Larned

Fort Larned, in central Kansas, was the "Guardian of the Santa Fe Trail". It operated from 1859 until 1878. The post protected travelers for a 150 mile stretch of the Santa Fe Trail. It played a crucial role in the 1867 Cheyenne Indian War and was the location of the Medicine Lodge Treaty, which ended the war. Since there were no trees and no Americans knew how to build with adobe, the fort was built from locally quarried limestone. The fort was closed after the completion of the railroad to Santa Fe.
