Feb 17, 2015 - Another Issue Arises

It was sunny and 18 degrees as we continued on 35. The check engine light was no longer on, so we decided (based partly on truck's youth and low mileage) to keep going. (Since we had had no idea ahead of time we'd be taking that route, we didn't have the opportunity to visit my sister in the KC area.) We had lunch at JJ's Homestead in Kearney, MO (taco salad, pork tenderloin sandwich) and headed south on 35, bypassing the big city. As we entered the Flint Hills area it was 40F and we celebrated every degree above freezing. On highway 177,...

Sep 3, 2012 - Bleeding Kansas

The Civil War really started in Kansas in the 1850’s. The issue was whether Kansas should enter the United States as a slave state or a free state. The abolitionist’s and pro-slavery forces clashed in southeast Kansas around Osawatomie starting about 1856. John Brown, a fanatic abolitionist, and his followers killed 5 pro-slavery sympathizers to retaliate for the sacking of abolitionist Lawrence, KS. An equal number of abolitionists were killed in Osawatomie a couple of years later. John Brown was the leader of the freestaters. In 1859,...

Nov 16, 2011 - Kansas Bound

I'm now in Kansas. I did enjoy my night in the motel once I got settled in and the shower was GREAT!! Ate breakfast at the motel, packed up, ran the car through its paces [there is a strict procedure to go through before towing the car], packed up the MH then left Cameron, MO. While there was no snow in the forecast, it snowed fairly heavily for a bit around Emporia, KS. I thought maybe I was going to have to stop as the ground was getting covered too but then it tapered off. So I continued on to my first campground, an RV Park. There is a...

Aug 15, 2011 - El Dorado, KS

After the rains had passed, we set off towards our next stop at an RV park on the outskirts of El Dorado called Deer Grove. When we got there it wasn't much to look at and ressembled a large parking lot but we were happy to have cable TV and fast WIFI internet. The owner told us they had been hit by a tornado the previous year destroying 25 trees in their small park together with one of the motor homes parked overnight. The town had also been hit with businesses damaged and not a sign in the town was left afterwards. She showed us the...

Oct 1, 2009 - El Dorado State Park, Kansas

We stopped at El Dorado State Park for three days. The park was virtually empty except for the RV section that had utilities. Consisting of several sections, the park in our section resembled the Everglades' river of grass. For as far as you could see, the three feet tall brown grass rippled and swirled from the wind. The temperature was about 55f, and a good wind blew two of the three days we were there. A little barbecue, a little biking, and a little housework rounded out our stay. As we were leaving the park, we noticed a lot of bikers...

Jul 1, 2009 - Travel to El Dorado State Park

We'll spend 3 days touring SE Kansas. Many small towns still have old fashioned soada fountains, especially in pharmacies. Also there are great family restaurants. We'll drive the Flint Hills Scenic Byway, which has one of the last stands of unplowed tallgrass.

Jun 15, 2009 - Tornado Alley

Whether started getting rough, so we stopped in El Dorado, KS. While the kids and I setup, Katie went to Walmart. We had just enough time to get comfortable before heading to a tornado shelter. We dodged large hail stones while Katie sought refuge in the local hospital. Three tornados were confirmed in the area. One hit south of us, picked up, and came back down just north of us. The kids thought it was a cool adventure.

May 2, 2009 - Day 2 - El Dorado, KS

Miles Today: 257 Day: 2 Total Miles: 608 We met up with the 1st traveling companions, Don and Alice Faye Turney this morning in Carthage, MO. We traveled together to a Kansas State Park in El Dorado call Bluestem. It is located on the larges lake in Kansas, but the water was way high from all the rain they have been having. The RV sites were about as bad as you will find anywhere. Neither of us had ever seen any laid out like they were. Our satellite dome is not working. It just searches and searches but never locks on to a signal so that...

Sep 27, 2008 - El Dorado, Kansas

This morning, we said goodbye to Carol. She is heading to southern Kansas to work for the next three months. We will miss her as we really enjoyed her company. She is a very special, talented lady. -- We got back onto Highway 281 South and headed out through the Kansas countryside once again. First, John stopped for gas at $3.34 a gallon. We were paying more than that in Tahoe for the last couple of years! The scenery changed - it was still fields of corn and maze, but now there were oil derrecks in each section. All these big ranches have...

Pretty Damn Nice!

May 19, 2007 - Oklahoma and Kansas

We left Duncan continuing north on route US 81. Before we knew it we were rolling into Enid where Ken and Carol had spent a fair portion of Ken's Air Force time. Fuel prices had really shot up so we swung into Vance AFB to see if they were any better. We filled up there and saved anywhere from 5 to 25 cents per gallon compared to what we had been seeing. I think I saw 2 stations that matched the price we paid ($3.299). Following the fill up we stopped by the BX to use the restrooms. Then we took some pictures of various AF trainer aircraft...
