May 11, 2016 - Concordia KS – Walmart Parking Lot

We put in a rather long day today – over 700 miles – and were all beat when we got to Concordia at 11:30 pm. I hit the bed right away and Rog was about 5 minutes behind me. Bridget had a great stop in Liberal KS. She got to play and roll in the grass while Rog went to McDonald’s and got our dinner. The bank there has a nice little park area across the street and the grass was lush and thick. Bridget loved it!! That and finding squirrels again in the campgrounds have been the highlights of her trip so far.

Retired at Last!

Sep 14, 2014 - Continuing West

We are moving slowly southwest. After Vermillion, we stopped for 5 days in Yankton, South Dakota along the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area while we waited for a storm to pass. Luckily all we had was heavy rain and no hail. Twice we woke up early attempting to leave and each time heavy winds and rain rocked the rig. Finally on the third day the weather the weather cleared allowing us to leave. At least we were in a nice campground. As usual in this part of the county, we were following Lewis and Clark’s footsteps. There are more corn fields...

Jun 3, 2013 - Orphan Train Museum/POW Camp Miral

Today we tried for the 2nd time to visit the Orphan Train Museum only to find that ALL museums are CLOSED in Kansas on Mondays. So we peaked through the windows and toured the grounds outside. Maybe the third time will be a charm. We also visited a local visitor center that has a few neat items on display. They told us about the POW Camp Mural which was pretty neat. Stopped by to see the POW Camp and all that was left was a reconstructed Guard House along Union Road.

Jun 2, 2013 - Airport Park Campground

Left Kansas City, KS and drove to Concordia, KS. We stayed at the Airport city park campground. It was very nice. Airport Park Campground is conveniently located adjacent to US-81 Highway, on the south side of Concordia. The campground is a fee-by-donation campsite. The scenic & wooded camping area includes 12 pads with water and electric hookups and a dump station. Several other pads are available without utility hookups, and those sites is ideal for tents. Restroom facilities are located onsite. A picnic shelter, storm shelter, pay phone,...

Apr 9, 2011 - Topeka, Abilene, Condordia

I started my day at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site which is housed in Topeka's Monroe School. Why was this school chosen? Because it was one of the four schools in Topeka for colored children and it was available for purchase. It is just coincidence that this was the very school that Linda Brown attended.( who , by the way, was in the building today but unable to get away at the time I was there - does she work there? is she a volunteer? was she just visiting? forgot to ask those questions) The park ranger was very...

Jul 9, 2010 - First Night In A Wal-Mart Parking Lot

Yesterday we drove all day long, after stopping for only an hour at the Wall Drugstore. Wow, that place is like a gigantic, free attraction and it's loaded with tourists. It's fun, yet tacky. LOL Here is the website if you'd like to check it out: http://www.walldrug.com/ After driving until about 9 pm, we found a Wal-Mart in Concordia, Kansas and parked for the night. Surprisingly the parking lot was very quiet, even though it was a 24 hour store. Must have been okay because we slept until almost 9 am then we hit the road in order to make...

Jack traveled through Texas, Oklahoma and spent the night somewhere near Concordia in Kansas at a Walmart, approx 500 miles. On this trip he realized the headlights were pointed to the ground! Another item for the Winnebago fixit list! He went through Liberal Kansas and says he did not run over TOTO!
