May 1, 2013 - Cabelas, snow in Kansas

Hi, Everyone, It's interesting for me looking back, to see the weather we ha coming out here. On May 1 we made it to Cabelas, near Kansas City. Joe updated his wardrobe, thanks to unused gift cards from the kids and since we forgot others at home we bought new collapsable chairs for the trailer. Things not only flattened out but the weather went from rain to snow 'bout the time we got to Topeka. We had a tire that kept making the low tire light go on, so had to stop to take care of that. Near Manhattan, KS traffic was light but it got...

Apr 19, 2013 - Kansas

Nothing like two days of awful weather to make you appreciate how beautiful the sunrise is on a cold, April morning. The sun rose right in front of our campsite across the lake into a sky unblemished by a cloud. It was about 22 degrees with the wind blowing at 10-20 mph so, it felt really cold. The drain at the dumpstation was frozen over and the kayak covers were frosty. Still, there is something about sunshine that buoys the spirits. Headed across Kansas today out of the Flint hills and into the rolling farmland of central and eastern...

We decided to skip sightseeing in...

Sep 1, 2010 - Kansas

Well, last night we had a ton of rain in Independence-- must have followed us from Florida. We hit the road around 9:00am and drove through Kansas City in the rain. Hey Dianne-- I did not recognize a single place! Once we got through KC we were in the plains of Kansas which go on and on and on! The good news is that we were able to drive out of the rain. We motored through the Flint Hills and saw some lovely farms and lots of corn. Also, saw our first windmill farm. I know this is the breadbasket of the nation and I do appreciate all that...

May 27, 2010 - One of the Eight Wonders of Kansas

Forty years ago Jerry and his parents took a road trip from Chicago to the Western States. As they were driving across western Kansas the drive got a little tedious. On the map was a landmark that was called "Chalk Pyramids". He remembered that it was a really cool thing to see. When we were in Dodge City he asked at the visitor's center about it and the helpful woman behind the counter found a web site and printed out information on the site. It was right on the highway (US 83) that we were taking north to Nebraska and so we planned to...

Aug 17, 2009 - Columbia, MO to Colby, KS

Monday August 17, 2009 Today we woke up to some cloudy skies and the promise of some rain at some point during our trip. I met a trio of seniors who were travelling to Wyoming from Tennessee. They were very friendly, and the younger woman told me that she used to ride when she was younger as well. She had a Harley Sportster, then proceeded to laugh and say that we were definitely going to get wet today, but at least it looked like we were prepared. In her Tennessee accent, it was amusing and cute to hear her say that, because I knew it was...

Oct 19, 2007 - Colby, Kansas

We had a wonderful 5 days in Evergreen. We had lots of great time with our friends Jim and Shauna at their home enjoying their outstanding hospitality and a few terrific get togethers with daughter Holly and her son Noah. We felt it was time to move on today. We took Holly and Noah to the Denver airport yesterday afternoon (she met us in Evergreen) and we had a wonderful dinner with our friends at their favorite restaurant last night. It has been a really great time but the road is calling. Today we headed east towards Kansas with no...

Jul 2, 2007 - Heading Back Across Kansas

07-02-2007 Heading Back Across Kansas Monday, June 2, I got up at 7:00 and made coffee. That got Dad up and we chatted at the kitchen table. Soon bob was up and we started bagels. Just as I told Dad he better wake Mom in time for us to leave, she arrived on the scene of her own accord, looking very sleepy. Coffee and bagels perked her up. Dad found a shopping bag with black slacks and black, heeled sandals behind a chair in the living room. He asked if I knew who was wearing them. I know I saw those shoes on someone's feet but I couldn't...

Oct 24, 2006 - Back On The Road

After a four-day delay in North Platte (there really is nothing to do in North Platte), we headed out again Tuesday afternoon. We were determined to get out of North Platte even if time would not allow many miles to be covered before it was time to spend the night again. We got as far south as Oakley, Kansas. We spent the night at the High Plains Campground at the US 83 interchange of I-70.

Oct 2, 2006 - Colby, Kansas

Monday-Tuesday, October 2-3, 2006 Monday, October 2, 2006 Even though we got up a little later, we left earlier. It was 9:37 am as we pulled out of the RV park. The sky was cloudy and it was 64 degrees. We got diesel at Bennett, Colorado. When we calculated our mileage it was 5.6 miles per gallon. Rick was not too disappointed because we had climbed the mountains for most of our drive the day before. The land was now flat and we could see ahead for miles. Outside of Arriba, Colorado we stopped at a Rest Area and had lunch. It was one of the...

May 25, 2006 - Day 4

Thursday - May 25, 2006 Starting mileage - 53,371 We're on the road again - at 7:53AM, headed towards Russell, Kansas for our next pit stop. We had a great, but short, time at the Arch in St. Louis. Wish we could have spent more time sightseeing that area, but we needed to get going again. Good thing too because when we got back to where we had illegally parked our unit, yep, there was a $25.00 (no parking zone) ticket on the windshield, under the wipers.  Small price to pay for hauling a 30 ft. unit behind us, looking for a place to park...
