Sep 24, 2018 - HitchHiker Service

This years annual visit to HitchHiker Service; replaced my RV propane/electric refrigerator with a Whirlpool residential, electric only version. The life expectancy of an RV frig is between 5 and 10 years. Two negatives, the cost is almost $3K, second, the likely hood of being stranded in the middle of nowhere miles from a technician & a new unit was, well NOT appealing. My HH is 5 years old, so this was a planned upgrade. New unit has more capacity AND is FROST-FREE! I am a HAPPY CAMPER!!!...

Jul 15, 2018 - 100.1 Degrees and humid!!

It is actually July 17th, 2 days later than the actual day I am writing about! I spent hours writing last night and forgot to save it all as I typed, (I was multi tasking and glued to The Bachelorette!) and when I did try to save it the internet connection had been lost at the hotel and I lost everything! Grrrrrr . . . Oh well, there must have been a reason for it! So let me describe what I can remember! Especially the good bits! We started the day early in Eureka with a buffet breakfast before getting on the road! It was really good, we...

Jan 13, 2018 - Saying Goodbye Once Again to Chanute

Tomorrow I will brave the elements and head to Oklahoma City. I really have turned into a wuss after de-accelerating for 2 1/2 years. I must remind myself I drove to work in Coffeyville with snow on the road, during the ice storm and 8 degrees outside. I survived the nights and the cold and all that miserableness just fine and dandy. And heck, it's only cold here. No ice. No snow. Time to cowboy up! I'm in my 5th wheel now and am absolutely loving it. I got to take possession of the rig last Wednesday and pulled it over to the Chanute City...

Jan 7, 2018 - Knights Ferry to Knights Inn

I arrived in Chanute at 1:40 on Tuesday, Jan. 2. I remembered all the fellows who'd be working on my rig and especially Boo (the name he prefers to be called by his friends and wanted me to call him that). He'd installed my flat screen TV seven years ago and had to create a space where it'd fit. He remembered it well. There's work to be done..and investigating too, so I don't/won't know what all can be accomplished until we know the stuff we don't yet know about. It's ten years old now and needs a thorough physical. I trust these fellows...

Jun 18, 2017 - Day 50 - Cassoday to Chanute, KS

Today’s ride to Chanute, Kansas, was a glorious, rainy 97-mile ride with 1,959’ of ascent. It rained off and on for the first 80 miles of the ride. Because it kept the air cool, I welcomed the rain. It was 57 degrees at ride start and only 70 degrees when the rain stopped. The overnight stay for today was Chanute, Kansas, population 9,295 at an elevation of 958’. Founded on January 1, 1873, Chanute was named after railroad engineer and aviation pioneer Octave Chanute. Jennifer Knapp, a folk rock, singer-songwriter, is from Chanute. The...

Oct 14, 2014 - NuWa/HitchHiker Service

After putting over 8,000 miles on my HH, 'Condo on Wheels', this year, it had a few issues that, while still under warranty, needed expert attention. So, in conjunction with my Mom's birthday, a trip to NuWa/HitchHiker Service Department in Chanute KS was schedule for Oct 15th. The trip to NuWa Service, as expected, was a complete success. I am a HAPPY CAMPER!!...

Nov 17, 2013 - Trip to Chanute for Washing Machine(Ariston) repairs

No pictures!!! (Rookie mistake) The trip to NuWa Service in Chanute was primary to fix/resolve a 'dead' Washing Machine. The first load I did the day I picked up my HH was successful, but the second one @ I-24 CG was not. NuWa Service Technician Rick Nesmith, working with Ariston(Washer)support, both agreed to replaced the washer with a new one 'out of the box'. Great Customer Service!! While HH/washer was being serviced, I took a trip to Coffeyville KS to visit the 'Dalton Defenders Museum'. The notorious Dalton Gang came to town with...

Nov 11, 2013 - Chanute - Veteran's Day

We are still in Chanute after almost two weeks, NuWa is still working on our 5th wheel, they are taking their time doing it right, we visit them at least once a week to see the progress and to see if they need anything from us and we also get food and drink from our home as needed. We watched the Veteran's day parade, it was very impressive, 5 bands, lots of veterans and especially a very dear Grand Marshal - 94 year old Marge Neely, a WWII Marine. It was very well attended. After the parade, there was a dedication of the Veteran's Memorial...

Nov 9, 2013 - Chanute, Kansas

Since we will spend another week, the Tioga management put us in a different room, more room and a view of downtown Chanute, the Walter Johnson (a Hall of Fame pitcher from Humble about 40 miles from Chanute) room is roomier and very nice. The owner, Todd Johnson and his family have been associated with the hotel since the 1920s. The Tioga is considered an important example of the work of Pratt, a civil engineer and contractor who both designed and built more than 60 structures in Chanute. Considered Chanute’s “Master Builder”, he designed...

Nov 6, 2013 - Chanute, Kansas

Well we thought we would have left Chanute today; however, NuWa needed a couple more days to complete the repairs and upgrades. They only work a half a day on Fridays and are closed over the weekend, so it will be tuesday or Wednesday of next week before we leave for a warmer climate. It is suppose to be in the 30 for a high on the 12th with low near 20, ugh, at least we are in a hotel room and the 5th Wheel is inside the repair facility. A couple of years ago, one of the online forums we belong to "Haulin' HitchHikers" (full-timers who...

Nov 1, 2013 - Chanute, Kansas

Well, most of you know about Google and about Google Earth. Well there are two Google Earth's center of the Earth. The original Google earth was developed by a small company bought by Google, the owner/developer went to work with Google and since he was responsible for the Windows version of Google Earth (programming totally different for a Windows versus an Apple computer platform) graduated from University of Kansas, he established Lawerence KS as the Windows' center of the earth for Google Earth. The MAC (Macintosh) developer also a...

Oct 31, 2013 - Chanute, Kansas

NuWa Industries unfortunately has stopped producing Hitchhikers. The economy really hit them hard. We are hopeful that they will be able to restart manufacturing them in the future, they made the best 5th wheels in the RV marketplace. They still repair them and they have opened up a New / Used RV center and it is doing well. While in Chehalis WA, we found water leaks after we got 8+ inches in two days, the damages turned out to be more extensive than we first thought. There was water damage near the front end cap, on the floor and sidewall...
